one more spoon of cough syrup - Juniper Whitebark - July 08, 2020

maybe @Warlock? :eyes:
she's been set on finding more of those purple flowers — lavender, they were called. but they were surprisingly difficult to find despite her (she was sure) especially keen nose. she happened to drift out of the territory, a fact not lost on the girl, but decided her mother would be very much alright with it this time, since she was on a mission.

she'd skirted a great outcrop of rock for a little while, until it fell away and she scented a foreign border. she blinked; mother had given them the low-down on borders and packs and such, but she'd never encountered another pack, least of all did she expect on this close.

heeding her mother's lesson, she did her best to stay on the right side of it, oddly nervous as she skirted the foreign markings. and then, quite suddenly, there it was -- a low, fragrant bush, dotted with the lavender flowers. she stopped, making a beeline for the thing before realizing that the pungent scent of border existed between her and it. frustrated whine escaped her, and gaze flit to and fro in search of movement on the other side. she could slip over -- but the thought made her uneasy; that would be wrong. "hello!" she called, frustration growing. "'cuse me!!"

Spook paid little attention to plants unless they were directly in his way. To him they were all just green things. And the odd plant sometimes smelled bad or was extra spiky but really he didn't care too much. They weren't his thing. He had other stuff that he wanted to do -- or should do -- and none of it involved plants.

In fact, Spook was just gonna wander out of the territory and see who was beyond the borders, but he hadn't quite gotten there yet -- he'd stopped a ways back after hearing a distant unfamiliar voice. Not a heinously loud one. Sounded young? At the second call, he started moving again, trotting that way with ears pricked and a look of confusion. Who the heck was it?

Blink. A kid? Whoever the light colored kid out there was, it wasn't anyone from the pack. He slowed, still looking utterly befuddled. Ummm. Who are you? Aren't you a little far from uh. Wherever you're supposed to be? He never had dared to leave the packlands until he was way older. Was she lost? He wasn't familiar enough with who was who in Whitebark to really pin down the scent.  He mostly knew that a pack was there so he'd keep away from them. Duh.

someone answers, finally, and suddenly she's nervous. he's a look bigger than she is, a stranger, and she's a fair distance from home. juniper fidgets, but remains planted as she stranger approaches. she licks her lips, her mouth, which has suddenly become quite dry, opens and closes once before she speaks. "hi! I'm, um, Juniper Sveta Whitebark and, um, it's okay because I'm on a, um, mission!" this is meant just as much to reassure herself as it is to answer the stranger's question.

she blinks, peering once over her shoulder as if expecting her father, fully prepared to ground her, to appear there. but he does not, at least, not yet, and so she forges on. "can I have some of your lavender? it's really nice looking and I think 'ditey would like it." she swallows, imagining what her mother might do in this situation. having never been to another pack's borders, absolutely nothing comes to mind. except - dawn wouldn't fidget so much. the girl stills, though her tail remains wagging at her rear.

Well, she was on a mission, she says. But uh... Why was she really here? Like shouldn't she be at home? He pieced a few things together, Whitebark was the pack next door wasn't it? So at least she hadn't wandered far. However, Spook hadn't ever dealt with anyone younger than him -- he hadn't even met his younger siblings yet -- so he was really uncertain what to exactly do there. He wasn't exactly born with some sort of innate fatherly instinct, he still acted more like some adolescent even if he might look fully grown.

And she was kind of acting like she was looking for someone? Um. I'm Spook. Pause. Slight head-tilt, What's lavender? Again, plants = not his thing. Was he gonna get in trouble for any of this? And whoever or whatever "ditey" was, were they gonna try and steal it?

despite her attempts to remain still, her nervousness only grows until her forelimb begins to twitch, a quick and steady rhythm against the unyielding ground. oh, gods. her father's last reprimand remained fresh, and she could almost hear him approaching, fully prepared to give another. a glance over her shoulder, just to make sure.

"it's, um, the plant over there! with the purple flowers, kinda like a bush. it smells nice," she supplies, attention returned to the boy. "just, um, a few of the stalks would be really nice," juniper elaborates, though at a refusal she wouldn't press further -- nervousness and guilt put an end to any further desire to linger here.

What was she looking at?! It was starting to make him nervous as well. Like maybe she was being chased by something? Was a bear or something nasty gonna pop out of nowhere? He tried not to think about it right now. Maybe he was imagining it. She should be home, not out here trying to get eaten by some cougarbearmonster.

Anyway, Juniper did answer him. He looked where she did, blinking at the plant. Huh. Yeah, plants were invisible to him, so it was like suddenly it lit up like a cheap 80's cartoon prop no longer being part of the scenery. Back to her, Uhh. Like from the bottom or just the purple part? It was a pretty tall plant, and even though the pup might not be big and threatening like the rest of his own family, he still didn't want to do the wrong thing.

He still seemed confused about why she wanted a plant, though. The dude who had a collection of rocks and other random objects was being confused about someone wanting part of a plant...
