pretend you know this song - Alexandre - July 27, 2020 @Tahoe ^^
How was there snow on the ground this late into the year? This territory was odd, and even though the snow on the ground wasn't much, it was still snow. In summer. In all four years of his life, Alejandro had not seen anything like it. The spotted man approached a particularly dense patch of ice, pawing at it in wonder. How strange. He'd been traveling with Tahoe for a while now - the man was quiet, strong, and intriguing. A perfect traveling companion, even if Ale had to carry on the conversation more often than not. Luckily for him, and perhaps not so luckily for the wolf he was with, he had never been at a loss for words. Pausing for a moment, the St. Clair turned around. Where was that companion of his, anyway? He couldn't have left him too far behind. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - July 27, 2020 Frost crunched beneath his paws as he padded along. It astounded him how the cold substance managed to thrive in such a hot environment. His tongue lolled from his jaws as he panted, the merciless sun beating down on him. Tahoe paused for a moment, eyes panning the desolate landscape. The plains were rather simplistic, an endless grassland dappled by occasional patches of rock and ice. A more sizable chunk of snow gleamed brilliantly in the sunlight. He strode toward it, bending downward for a a few licks. The icy sensation numbed his hot tongue. Pleased, the lupine lifted his skull, continuing on his way. His travelling partner, Alejandro, was up ahead. He allowed him a significant lead, choosing to assume a more indolent gait. Soon enough, he espied the familiar man's motionless silhouette in the near distance. McBride lumbered toward him without haste. Eventually, he caught up to him.
What?He mumbled as an apathetic greeting. RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - July 28, 2020 The word was as chilly as the frost beneath his feet, but Ale was not one to care about such things. McBride was a man of few words, and if he were being honest, Alejandro didn't mind it as much as he thought he would in the beginning. There was no demanding of him, no requirements, no need for trickery. It was simple, not complex, for the first time in his life. Still, he felt the need to rile the other man up a bit, or at least attempt to. "What, yourself," he responded breezily, tail swaying as he tilted his head to the side. "Am I wrong to wait for my companion to catch up? We are in unfamiliar territory, after all." The insinuation was that it was dangerous, even if the land around them seemed anything but. "Things are backwards here. There's frost in the summer. Who knows what could happen to us, alone?" RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - July 29, 2020 Tahoe stared at him blankly, no distinguishable emotion in his deadened eyes. Alejandro's words sparked no reaction. He was used to being nagged by his family. They were gone now, but their antics had left him with a surfeit of patience. McBride was never a doormat though, often choosing to assert his pertinacious attitude at will. An enervated yawn escaped his maw. Insouciant, he traipsed past St. Clair without a word. He ventured a few yards ahead before halting, peering back over his shoulder before addressing the man.
Eh, we'll be fine. Don't give a damn about some frost. What's your plan then, Chief? He questioned, the words laced with his monotonous brand of droll sarcasm. RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - August 09, 2020 "Well, I am hungry, and I figured you probably were too, so I was thinking that we might be able to put our heads together and come up with a plan to catch some food," he offered with a lopsided smile, padding up to walk alongside his companion. He refrained from making a joke about the larger man's intelligence - something along the lines of I'll be the one using my brain. But that would probably offend the other, and he didn't want to do that. He cleared his throat and shifted his paws, his shoulder popping slightly. Oh, how he hated aging. "Nothing too big, of course. But I was thinking we might be able to find some rabbits?" RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - August 12, 2020 Tahoe couldn’t deny it. A meal would be great to have right about now. His stomach emptily clawed at his belly in protest, demanding to be filled. He ignored the sensation, diverting his thoughts to focus on how to obtain food, rather than yearn aimlessly for it. Alexandre had suggested rabbits, but Tahoe wanted more. He was accustomed to bringing down large game with his pack—rabbits would be more challenging to pursue in such an open environment anyway. Yet, McBride knew not to set his hopes up for anything big. Whichever prey they happened to stumble upon would suffice. Now was not the time to be picky.
Almost anything will do. You up for anything larger? There’s bound to be deer ‘round here. Reckon we could get a fawn.He suggested. RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - August 20, 2020 Oh, deer, huh? That would be better, he had to admit. Still, Alejandro was not a big fan of extra effort, so it took a moment or two of deliberation before he could find it in himself to agree. "Yeah, that sounds good," he acquiesced, nodding his head and turning clear eyes toward Tahoe. "You any good at tracking?" he questioned, tipping his head to the side with a slight smirk. He supposed he could do it if he had to, but he rather wanted to know what his companion was good at. Perhaps he had some usable skills. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - August 25, 2020 He scoffed, momentarily meeting Alejandro’s gaze before turning away.
You underestimate me,was his response, a subtle twinge of amusement in his voice. McBride prided himself on being self-sufficient, navigating scent trails was a breeze. The problem was locating said scent in the first place. Tahoe ambled forth, wasting no time. Blades of dewy grass tickled his nostrils as he stooped, closely inspecting the fields for any faint signs an ungulate had passed through.
RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - August 27, 2020 Oh, eye contact and inflection to his tone? Ale was getting somewhere with this one - he could just tell. "Now when did I say that?" he questioned, but quieted as he followed the larger wolf, fixated on how he scented the ground and sought out potential trails. Clear eyes scanned the ground and zeroed in on an indent. Alexandre padded up to it and touched his nose to the frosted earth, eyes narrowed. "Maybe here?" he asked, gesturing to the hoofprint. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - August 29, 2020 He didn't bother replying to the man. Hunger stifled his willingness to even think about making conversation. Tahoe lifted his head, his eyes stoically panning the grasses ahead. Ears pricked, he lumbered forth, his attention clearly focused upon something. A small gathering of ice had been disturbed, fractured by an animal who had impetuously stepped on it. McBride had nearly reached it when Alejandro called to him. He exhaled, peering over his shoulder to see what his companion had found. The indomitable beams of sunlight battled his eyes, forcing him to squint. Through his slitted gaze, he managed to somewhat identify what Alejandro had pointed out—half based on assumption, thanks to his previous discovery. Tahoe gave a hasty nod of acknowledgement, then wordlessly turned, going ahead to investigate the other footprint he had located. Surely the spotted man would get the message.
RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - September 01, 2020 Ah, so McBride was even less talkative when they were on the hunt. That was fine by the spotted man - he was learning that he rather liked silence sometimes, even if it was foreign to him. Alexandre padded forward after Tahoe and glanced to the track he had found, nodding his head after. It was pretty obvious which way the deer were going, and so the St. Clair stuck his nose to the ground and went to work. The scents were faint, at first, but relatively easy to follow with how plain the tracks were in the frost. Their prey couldn't be far off now, he figured, tipping his nose up and catching the scent of a herd being wafted directly toward them. Excellent - the wind was on their side. "Do you see them?" he breathed to the older man, arching a brow. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - September 01, 2020 Tahoe paused above the hoofprint, a sharp exhale exiting his nostrils after giving the decimated ice a thorough sniff. Without a doubt, the print was made by a deer. Based on the scent's freshness, their quarry had to be lingering nearby.
Do you see them? Inquired Alejandro, approaching. McBride flicked an ear his way, but signaled nothing more to him. He figured St. Clair was capable of using his eyes. They were probably sharper than his anyway.
They're somewhere 'round here. Go ahead. He answered in a low mumble, following the beaten trail the deer had created without further delay. He kept his gait furtive, it would be a foolish mistake if he were to spook the prey early—potentially costing them the whole hunt. Tahoe felt it would be more efficient if St. Clair were to lead. He assumed he would be faster, based upon the man's spry stature. Speed was not Tahoe's strongsuit, but he made up for it in stamina. If Alejandro could slow down their target, Tahoe would certainly be there to assist in the takedown. RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - September 01, 2020 Alexandre nodded his head at the go-ahead from the older wolf and scouted out. The deer weren't far off - it was a small group, a buck, three does, and two fawns. The doe without a fawn was older, limping, probably didn't have a lot of time left anyway. That was the one they should go for. The St. Clair jerked his muzzle toward the old deer, signalling to Tahoe that he was about to run. And he did. Ale was quick on his feet, dashing into the tiny herd and breaking them up. Fortunately, the younger deer all scattered in different directions, and he was able to herd the older one off, nipping at her heels and driving her toward McBride. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - September 01, 2020 Adrenaline coursed in his veins as he laid eyes on the ungulates. His heart thumped in his chest, echoing in his eardrums. Tahoe's gaze flickered to Alejandro, who he found was at the ready. The subtle motion from his companion was all he needed to understand his intentions. Alejandro sprung like lightning, pursuing the scattering herd as they fled in sheer terror. Without trouble, he deftly managed to isolate the doe that bore a limp in her step. A prime target. Once the pair veered his way, McBride sprang from his crouch and into action. A guttural growl escaped his jowls as he sprinted, fixated upon the doe's injured hind limb. Upon reaching St. Clair's side, he lunged, sinking his incisors deep into the doe's left hock. Subsequently, this anguished the doe and caused a last-ditch burst in speed. Tahoe adjusted accordingly, keeping his jaws locked in place. She wasn't able to keep her gait up for long, significantly slowed by the weight and pain the man had inflicted.
RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - September 03, 2020 The two of them worked together well, Ale found with a small grin of approval. The doe was driven toward the larger male and McBride latched onto one of her legs. Alexandre watched her attempt to outrun the brown agouti wolf, and subsequent failure to do so. Perhaps he'd feel a bit bad, if he were a different wolf. But he just felt pride in their accomplishment. The spotted man sprinted a bit ahead and turned, letting the doe careen into him. He twisted and lunged, snapping his teeth down onto her throat to begin to suffocate her. She couldn't run with them both latched on like this. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - September 03, 2020 The old doe stood no chance against the pair. Tahoe could feel the energy to fight ebbing away from her muscles with each laborious bound. Alejandro was like a fish in water, deftly managing to sink his teeth into the doe's neck. She refused to go down easily though. The ungulate was effectively slowed to a meager jog now, bone-weary and unable to escape. She summoned what strength she had left to carry the two of them as she moved. McBride could empathize with her. He panted, his lungs burning from the long sprint. Unlike the doe, he had much more energy to burn.
At last, the debilitated animal could go on no longer. A growl rumbled within him as he mercilessly yanked at the idle doe's limb. She struggled to right herself, Alejandro still suspended from her throat. Persistently, Tahoe pulled again. This time he used much more force, jerking the doe's leg far from under her—a twisted game of tug of war. She didn't fight his excruciating tactics now, stumbling lamely backwards onto her belly.
RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - September 11, 2020 Alejandro's suffocation and McBride's weight had slowed the doe considerably. She stumbled and fell onto her stomach, and then it was pretty much over. The St. Clair bit down harshly, feeling his teeth slice through meat and veins and jugular. His own throat and mouth were stained red by the doe's blood, and his stomach growled with anticipation. This was a good meal, he figured. Definitely enough to feed the both of them. "Good hunt," he panted, stepping back to catch his breath. He wasn't as young as he used to be, and he could feel it. Last year he probably wouldn't have even been out of breath. "No injuries?" Because it was important to make sure the two of them were in tip top condition. RE: pretend you know this song - Tahoe - September 12, 2020 The deer tumbled to the ground with a dull thud. Alejandro still had her by the throat, the pursuit finally concluding. Tahoe could feel the doe's remnants of strength vanish through his clenched jaws. She was dead. He promptly released, panting as he walked over toward the bulk of the carcass. McBride plunged his teeth into its thick hide, a breathy growl of effort bubbled in his throat as he began to pull and tear the stomach open. Soon enough he had punctured a sizable opening. The wolf shoved his snout in, ravenously consuming what flesh was available. St. Clair observed nearby, offering him a weary congratulations.
I'm fine. You?He responded, voice muffled by his full mouth. RE: pretend you know this song - Alexandre - September 15, 2020 Tahoe ate like he was starving, and... well, Alexandre was as well. A smile stretched across his maw at the blood splattered across the other man's face and he nodded his head. "Perfectly fine," he assured, lowering his head down to open the hide up further so that he could partake as well. Man, if anyone had told him having a traveling companion made things this much easier, he would've gotten himself one a long time ago. fade?
