keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 21, 2020

He's looking for Fenn, but any FG wolves are welcome to come poke at him :)

Fig had been bothered when Fennec hadn't returned home with their parents. He knew her intention wasn't to stay forever (or so she'd told them), but still. Had she been planning it? Had it been her intention all along to stay behind? And if that was the case, maybe she was also secretly planning to never come back. She probably wouldn't do that to them, but the days dragged on in her absence, and soon there were too many for his comfort. Big brother paranoia set in, so he'd bid his parents farewell with the promise to return in a couple of days (because he's the GOOD child) and set off.

He knew the way to Moonspear (I think he was once PP'd as going there with Towhee and Meerkat but I can't for the life of me remember), and the instructions for how to get from there to Firefly Glen were simple enough. It took him a little more time than he liked to find the borders, but eventually he came upon them. The markings were fresh--a telltale sign of the new pack's eagerness to establish. He inspected them overly long, trying to figure out if Fennec had started helping them setup the boundary as she would if she'd decided to join them, but wasn't able to determine anything.

Satisfied, if only momentarily, Figment tilted his head back and called. It would've been rude to request only his sister, so it was an open invitation to let the wolves of the Glen know he was there. He had little doubt @Fennec would hear and come to him, unless she really had decided to stay and the guilt of doing so without talking to him was too much.

Big brother paranoia is for reals.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 21, 2020

Fennec probably should have guessed that Figment would come to her, but she really hadn't.  Was she upset about it? Fuck no.  It was actually kind of nice, a bit of a change of pace from the usual.  That feeling of righteous appreciation lasted about as long as it took her to remember she'd basically ghosted him without explanation... and then the reluctant guilt set in.

She always hated answering summons because one howl was never quite enough for her to be sure she'd find the person.  At least this time she knew he'd be directly at the border, so if she paced along it, she'd run into him.

She made sure to approach casually when she caught his scent.  Hey, Fig.  As if it were just another day, running into him in Firebird territory. What's up?  She'd know pretty immediately what his mood was when he spoke, but right now, she had zero idea.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 22, 2020

Fig contented himself to continue sniffing around at the border markings while he waited. He was interested to learn more about the wolves that were settling here. He'd heard stories of Moonspear, though he'd only met their matriarch once from afar. He wanted to learn more. They were sister packs, after all. And apparently large enough that the pack could split into two and still have quite a good number of wolves in the new pack, or so he determined from the markings he read.

His ears swiveled when he caught the sound of approaching footsteps. He lifted his head and spotted her coming. He smiled softly, but it tensed when she greeted him. It was so casual. Too casual. She was definitely going to bail on him. He took a breath to steady himself under the weight of disappointment and sadness. He knew he was making assumptions that he shouldn't. He was being paranoid. He told himself not to project this on her--to just say hi and ask how things were going. Have a normal conversation.

"You're not coming home, are you?" he asked instead.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 22, 2020

Well, there went that idea.  He started in immediately with what was on his mind, to his credit, but Fennec was irritated with the assumption.  She hadn't decided yet, but Fig thinking he knew what she was going to do was just as annoying as if Bronco had done it.  They didn't know shit about what she actually felt.

Seriously?!  You're going to go right in with that card?  It came out a little defensively, and she needed to curtail that.  So she snorted irritably.  Yeah, Fig, I'm never coming home again. Because suddenly I hate mom and dad and you and never want to see you again.  You've got to be kidding me.

She couldn't tell what effect it had, but any guilt over coming on strong was overwhelmed with the difficulty she was already feeling faced with a choice.  She'd had genuine fun here so far, and it was such a good opportunity to make something of herself without anyone handing it to her.  On the other hand, she definitely missed her family and the solid security they provided.  There was no easy answer so she no intentions of giving a straight one just yet.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 22, 2020

Her reaction was not exactly unexpected, though still he winced when it came. He realized he definitely should've gone with the softer approach, but what was done was done. He listened to her defend with sarcasm and became all the more certain of his suspicions. If she hadn't decide yet she was going to stay with the wolves of the Glen, she was certainly considering it.

Fig frowned and rolled his eyes lightly--reacting to Fenn with a touch of Fenn, he realized. "Obviously I know you don't hate us. And obviously you know what I meant," he replied, surprised as his own temper which he usually held so well in check. He took a moment to reel it in, then rephrased his question, gentler this time. "You're considering joining this pack," he said, inadvertently making it a statement rather than a question.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 22, 2020

Why did everyone always have to rush her?  Did she always have to have an answer right this very minute?

Obviously this was 100% a Figment problem.  Clearly no one else involved.

I don't know, I've only been here what, a week?!  She could hear that he was upset, which was odd for Fig.  It almost made her regret the dig she'd just made.  I'm not picking a fucking den decor, but yeah, maybe it's nice to have options.  She bristled a little.  Can't I just enjoy it?

The worst part was, he hadn't even asked in a way that implied she couldn't.  That was all her doing, and she realized it as soon as the question was left to hang in the air.  She just had to come out swinging rather than telling him to just mind his own business, didn't she?  Fuck.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 22, 2020

In the moment Fig made the statement, he began to resign himself to it. And in the moment he resigned himself, he began to reason with himself to put the anger away and empathize. Fortunately, where sarcasm and defensiveness came easily to Fenn, calm and understanding typically came easy to Figment. He listened to her retort quietly, letting her anger smack him like a tidal wave, then wash away like the tide. Of course she might want to stay. And of course she'd be mad that he was pushing her about it already. With an unpleasant jolt, he realized he was being just like Penn.

Oh, hell no.

He breathed another sigh and shook his head, letting it go entirely. "Of course you can," Fig replied, his voice steady and tired, "I'm sorry, I got in my own head and thought... Actually, I don't even know what I thought. I didn't mean to come after you like that, though." He paused for a moment, then decided to go for broke and added to it.

"I didn't mean to suggest that I don't see why you might want to," Fig admitted, "Nor that I would be surprised or mad at you if you did. I didn't hold it against you with Penn and I wouldn't now. I just... I dunno. I'm your brother. I like to know where you are in the world." He tensed then, waiting for her to thwap him over the head for being such a goob. "Nice to see you, by the way," he tacked on, just 'cause.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 22, 2020

He backed down immediately.  That could have backfired but instead it worked out better than she could have expected.  She wasn't necessarily in the right here, but she wasn't about to question his words.

Yeah, I guess it's only natural that you miss me.  It's good to see you too.  She really hadn't wanted to disappear on them without a word, but she hadn't expected the trip here to come so soon.  Really, she'd thought Bronco's invitation would be one she'd take at their next new moon visit.

Did you really come all the way here just to ask me if I wasn't coming back though?  That's pretty intense.  Fennec huffed out a laugh.  She guessed there might be more to it, but she'd have taken a dumber excuse for travel herself.  Who was to say?

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 22, 2020

With that, the argument seemed to be over between them. He smiled, happy that this was the case. Their fights never really seemed to last very long. He honestly couldn't even remember half of all they'd ever had, they were usually so inconsequential. They felt big in the moment, but when they were done, they were gone.

He blushed underneath his dark fur as she called him out for his absurdity. In hindsight, that had been pretty intense of him, but it had only become so in that moment he saw her and his paranoia suddenly became too strong to ignore. Prior to that, it had just been a friendly visit. With a little baggage. "To be fair, if you'd said you weren't coming back, it would seem a lot less dumb," Fig reasoned.

All of that out of the way, Fig leaned back towards conversation as usual. "What've you been up to here?" he asked, his curiosity reigniting about the pack full of strangers his sister had been spending time with.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 23, 2020

So that really was it? Wow.  True, though she hadn't exactly "not" said it either.  She pushed that thought away for another time, though, because she really did mean to enjoy this for some length.

She never could really hold onto any anger towards Fig, mostly because he made it impossible.  He just apologized and eventually made you feel bad for making him apologize.  She was mostly immune to it, thank god, but it made it impossible to argue a point to real anger.

The usual, causing problems.  She grinned a very catlike smile.  It's so easy here, Fig.  I'm pretty sure I got Bronco into a shitload of trouble because some guy actually believed I was sensitive about blind jokes. Me.  She cackled, then sat down.  I've got a few of them thinking I'm an actual witch too.  Which is pretty cool.  She twisted an ear to listen for a response. What about back home?  Anything good happen while I've been gone?

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 23, 2020

Fig was wise not to expect the typical answer from his sister. She rarely ever gave those. He couldn't help but quirk a brow at the whole witch thing, wondering when that fascination had started. He didn't ask though. It was sometimes better not to.

"So, the usual then," he commented with a grin. Until she mentioned Bronco, he'd forgotten that he and Meerkat were here too. He made a mental note to look in on them either before or after he went to see Hydra. "Nothing new to report," he answered with a shrug, "The kids are kids. The adults are adults. They miss you."

"They did send me with a message to deliver to Hydra," he brought up simply to have something better to say, "Mom is inviting her to come visit the Copse. I was going to go over to Moonspear later today. Is she... cool? Hydra, I mean?" He felt stupid asking, but still, he wanted to know what to expect.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 23, 2020

Oh, that's weird.  It wasn't weird that Hydra was being invited, but it was weird that she was being invited alone.  If it was a social call, wouldn't mom want the whole group?  Any idea why?  If it was sensitive information Fennec was fully prepared to call bullshit on that and bully it out of her brother.  (Or maybe, as usually worked better, weasel it out.)

She's pretty cool I guess.  I haven't seen her much since I'm hanging out around here, but from what I hear, she's a lot more strict than mom.  Fennec flicked her tail carelessly.  She should probably make an effort at some point to meet Hydra outside of their initial joining, but after meeting Osiris, how interesting could she be?  Her kid is in charge here, and he's the one who I got with the whole blind act.  He was so terrified he had offended me, it was pretty funny.  Manners like that had to come from somewhere, and it definitely wasn't from a mom like Towhee.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 23, 2020

Fig wasn't sure what it was she found weird about it. For once, he hadn't overthought the meaning behind something. It seemed too normal of a request. So, he merely shrugged. "From what I gathered, it's just a social visit," he replied. Towhee hadn't alluded to anything more ominous with her words or her manner. He'd thought nothing of it, though he supposed it might be a little odd. Hydra had never come to the Copse before, as far as he was aware.

He was more interested in Fenn's assessment of Hydra, so he let his curiosity drop on the former subject. His brows lifted when she admitted that Hydra's son was the one she'd tricked, and that he was the leader of the pack. "Man, you really do know how to make the right friends," he quipped, shaking his head at her.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 23, 2020

Fennec did her best to appear mock offended by his remarks, but she'd never been great at exaggeration her expressions the other way.  She could play at serious, but anything else took too much nuance for a girl who never saw what a face actually looked like.  How do you know we aren't the best of friends?  As if there was any way in hell that would happen... at least, this fast.  From what she could tell he was a little too 'upstanding' for her tastes.

And if it's a social visit, then why wouldn't she invite me or Bronco or Meerkat?  He might have been willing to let it go, but Fennec switched right back to the subject at hand.  She put special emphasis on her sister because that was honestly the biggest surprise of the bunch.  No way would Towhee pass up a chance to see her.  Something's wierd.  Are you telling me you didn't even try to figure out what?  She let out a huff.  Figures.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 24, 2020

Fig had little doubt the leader of the Glen liked his sister. She was quirky, but charming. You couldn't help but admire a wolf with as much confidence and spirit as Fenn had, especially when you considered her disability. Being blind was something that would've left another helpless and bitter. It had only ever made Fenn all the more fierce.

She did not want to let this thing about Towhee go. Her next comment on it made him laugh. "Why would she need to send me to invite you guys to visit?" He asked, honestly baffled, "Bronco and Meerkat have a standing date to come home once a month, and you're still a member of the pack. What're you so paranoid about?"

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 25, 2020

Because that visit is a while off, yeah?  Fennec sighed audibly, visually shrugging off Fig's dismissal.  Whatever, don't care if you think I'm paranoid, it's weird.  I want to know what they are going to talk about.  They'd just made a visit, sure, but Fennec knew without a doubt that Towhee would take any excuse to come and see Meerkat.  If Hydra was coming to them, and Towhee hadn't made a point to make it a family affair, she figured something had to be up.

I'd ask you to eavesdrop, but I know you're way too respectable for that.  Fennec added, leaning forward to nip at where she assumed his ear might be.  If you somehow miraculously manage it, though, you should definitely do it.  For me.  She said this last bit with a slightly sweeter tone, grinning impishly.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 25, 2020

Fig could only quirk a brow at Fennec as she explained her suspicions. He supposed it made sense, in a way. A small way. Not really. But in any event, he wasn't going to argue the paint further with her. She had her mind set, clearly. He knew better than to expend too much energy trying to change it. So, he just shook his head and smiled.

He shrugged away from her nip, which landed closer to his neck than his ear and rolled his eyes. "I'm sure if it's something that ground breaking, we'll find out about it eventually," Fig reasoned, eyeing her sweet face suspiciously, "But if it makes you feel better... Still no." He reached up a paw then to rub the top of her head, grinning.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 28, 2020

Lame.  Expected, but lame.  Her voice was utterly disappointed, but she had a smile on her face, and tried to duck away after a couple of seconds of his head-rubbing.  Then, using her honed in instincts (mhm) she lunged for a tackle, hoping to catch him off guard and force him off his feet.  If she could get him pinned then she could definitely return the favor.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 28, 2020

Fig knew she wouldn't just sit quietly and take her head rubs. He didn't fight her attack, though. He fell backwards from her weight, shooting out a forearm to catch himself before he completely tumbled to the ground. He swung his other arm over her back and tried to pull her down, reaching with opened jaws for her scruff while he snarled playfully. It did not help his balance, but he tried to keep himself upright using her as his crutch. It was a terribly idea, really, for she was still moving, and suddenly his shoulder collided with the ground as he wrapped both arms around her.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 28, 2020

She almost got him, but now he had her in a bear hug, which made it very hard for her to get her paws where they needed to be to pin him.  She had stumbled sideways with the pull on her scruff and now tried to get her balance again.

Fennec shuffled sideways and resigned herself to using her (slight) weight to pin him down instead.  Without ceremony she collapsed over into his hold, intent on both flattening him and using him as a nice reclining lounge.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - October 28, 2020

Fig released his grip on Fenn’s scruff in the fall, opting to leave his mouth free to laugh in triumph rather than incapacitate her further. He took a sharp breath when she fell upon him, then rolled to shift her off of him.

Once freed, he stood again and faced her in a play now, panting through his smile. ”Come on,” he teased good-naturedly, ”You can do better than that.”

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - October 29, 2020

You were supposed to stay there, she complained as he shoved her off unceremoniously by wiggling out from under her.  She was in a lazy mood and that meant lounging.  Figment had thrown down the gauntlet with his teasing, though, and she couldn't very well let it go unanswered.

Fennec sighed and got slowly to her feet.  Meanwhile, she was judging just how far she'd have to go to get a solid hold on him.  Two feet?  Bit more?

She guesstimated and lunged, hoping that the slowness from before would make him think she wasn't about to take him up on it.  Then again, Fig knew her, so there was a prettttty good chance he was wise to her little tricks.  She was aiming to scruff him, but if she missed, she'd go for a glancing shove again.  He'd gotten taller since the last time they'd actually sparred, hadn't he?

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - November 01, 2020

Fig snorted at her comment, but didn't make a reply. This was a fight--he wasn't going to do what she wanted him to. Not if he could help it. Sparring with Fenn was always an interesting challenge. On the one hand, it was simple to take advantage of her disability. If there was any sense you wanted working well for a spar, it was sight. What made it interesting though was Fennec's ability to fight in spite of her blindness. She wasn't to be underestimated because she had learned to compensate. She was unpredictable too because she didn't give the same clues to hint at what she was about to do. Her eyes didn't travel to the direction she was about to go.

"Sorry to disappoint," he replied, knowingly giving way his position. He braced himself when she lunged and twisted so he caught her with his shoulder. Her trajectory wasn't quite what he thought it would be, though, and so it was his side she connected with. He felt the wind sail out of his chest and he coughed as he twisted again, trying to nab some part of her before she could grab hold of him.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Fennec - November 03, 2020

She was prepared to snag but instead found herself snagged as he caught the edge of her scruff.  Fennec was stopped short and had to compensate, but managed to keep her footing.  She twisted, trying to loosen and slither out of it.

While she did, she couldn't really bite him.  (Too bad, his ears deserved a good healthy chewing for this little catch).  Instead she shoved her shoulder into his, trying to displace him so she could put some distance between them.  She was quick, but when she got caught by someone bigger, the spar tables turned a bit.

RE: keep your head up, keep your heart strong. - Figment - November 03, 2020

Figment was a bit surprised when his wild grab actually caught him her scruff. He was not, however, surprised when he lost it only a few moments later. He hadn't been quick enough to grab a tight hold, nor accurate enough to grab a good one, so when Fennec drove into him with her shoulder, she slipped right out of his grip and got the opportunity she'd been looking for to get away from him.

He caught himself as he fell from her shove, twisting in the next moment to follow her with his gaze. He huffed in frustration, but it was followed by a smile. "Trying to nab you is like trying to nab a fish out of the river," he commented, a wee bit of pride in his voice in spite of himself.
