zeal without knowledge is a runaway horse - Scorpion - October 26, 2020

She returned near the realm of Firefly Glen, a bit more disheveled for her misadventures, but no less spirited for it. Though there seemed to be endless prospects in these wilds for the course of Scorpion’s life, she seemed fixated on vetting one in particular: the nighthawk, @Antares.

She’d made a nest, so to speak, far enough away to go undetected, yet close enough to watch their borders from. She would spend up to an hour there each day — watching, waiting, wanting for him to glide by. It had been some time since she had seen him on patrol alone, but this was likely due to her routine, which included hunting for hours on end before returning to her “bird’s nest” at an unpredictable time each day. Often she missed him entirely, and on the one occasion she had spotted him, he had not been alone.

Scorpion would not approach anyone else in the fold there. She would flee as soon as she caught wind of a scent that didn’t belong to him, and not return for the day, which also attributed to the length of time between their eventual meetings. This time, it was late afternoon at the flattened bit of ground she had worn down in her vigilance, and the rosewood sprite was on watch duty.

The Glen had kept the yearling busy. There was much ground to cover, and a lot to see. As their group grew and shifted, too, it was feeling like it was always something, somewhere, at some time. Antares was seeing firsthand all the work it took to establish something--even on the hearty foundations their family gave them to build upon, it was still no small feat, and rarely a dull moment.

Today, after the recharge of an afternoon nap, he had yet to rejoin any of his brothers. His progress would go solo for now, it seemed, and he didn't feel overly inclined to change this as he threaded through the quiet autumnal scene. Though their company was all to exactly his tastes, and he cherished prowling and hunting with his packmates out here, he could slip off into a venture all of his own just as well.

All the same, his walk had come to skim along their edges, ears tall, and eyes peeled. So far, nothing pinged as extraordinary, and the wind spoke him no favors yet. He gave half a pause to sniff an old smell on the ground, but kept on his way after deciding it didn't interest either.

Scorpion was beginning to wonder why she revolved around this spot so obsessively, as this consideration had not crossed her mind before. There had never been a reason to question her own actions before, but now she thought about it. She wondered what intrigued her so, about the young wolf and his brother’s claim, unable to recognize that it was loneliness that drove the social duskfox into realms of insanity. Repetitive actions that yielded nothing but a deeper ostracization at the end of the day. She was prepared to cease these visits, make this one her last...

Then, as if she had the ability to manifest her own desires in the bleakest moments, he was there. Plucking about the borders at a distracted clip. His dark fur dappled in waning sunlight. Scorpion was not sure it was him at first, and tensed in preparation to be disappointed, but the closer the rangy figure got, the more certain she became; Until the blue glint of his eye flashed in her direction, missing her nest by mere inches.

The mittened she-wolf darted out of her hiding spot, and prowled at an angle towards Antares, repeating the manner in which he had stalked her from before. She let her walk make all the noise she needed until they would lock eyes, and when she had his attention, she would drop further into her crouch, with cat-like intent, and pause just outside the borders to lash her tail fiercely.

I’ve been waiting, her eyes, hard as diamonds, accused.

He unknowingly walked right into this one. Even for the keen Antares, suspicion prickled at him too late, but as soon as realization dawned, he moved it swiftly onto interest. He swiveled an eager ear, and the second he had a trace of anything, he was following it towards the source--each stride lengthier than the last, until he screeched it all to a halt.

The scenery revealed a glimpse of red first. Not like the autumn leaves, a different shade.. but certainly, he had not forgotten, though this light was markedly different. It wasn't a stranger. He was instinctively searching for her face next, confirming that surprise once he spotted blue, and his nose said so too. Scorpion.

That wasn't what he expected of his mosey to nowhere. After the turn of their last meeting, he hadn't been sure what to think but.. it was something, somewhere. Now that she was here, back, it wasn't any clearer. His lifted his head, and the next steps were lighter.. confident enough of him, but like he knew a boundary hovered near, and he didn't want to cross hers unnecessarily while still getting closer--he had a lot of questions, after all, and to a proven flight risk no less.

Scorpion regarded the blacksmoke djinn’s approach with the shrewd defensiveness of a snake, despite inviting his nearness. She expected to endure a necessary roughness that she would then need to temper, but Antares did not appear keen to press his boundaries. The she-wolf balked mentally and felt her expression melt from one of objective severity to soft-petaled suspicion. Her nose wrinkled up as she sniffed towards him. His decency was not something she was familiar with, though her instinct was not to reject it outright.

Since he was once more relinquishing control of their distance, the Eyjolfur no longer felt afraid that he would needlessly harm her. If he was playing a game, he was patient at it, and she was not experienced enough to know better anyway. She slithered forward, keeping her belly low and throat shielded, as she sought to inspect his guard hairs with a feathery sniff.

Her muzzle recoiled slightly. I’ve never met a pack wolf like you, she told him, frowning thoughtfully as if unable to decide if this was a preferable state or not. One who doesn’t attack on sight, I mean.

He set his jaw, and felt the strange anticipation her flightiness spurred out of him start to spread. She looked all the part this time too even if the circumstance was different. Maybe consider yourself lucky then.. he smirked. He didn't think his brothers were on-sight like she suspected, either. Who knew what sort of trigger happy jaws she had run into so far? This Ostrega had yet to meet them, necessarily. Unless it was like one of his aunts on a bad day. That teeth-first response might be true there. The rest of their kind usually gave it a half-second to be nosy first. And you haven't given me too good of a reason to yet. Where's the fun in that? Antares added, matter of fact as he eyed her carefully.

You came back, he mentioned. It wasn't stated like a question, exactly, but he intoned that there was something heavier on its shoulders. Why? She had seemed unimpressed by his last answers and the information that she had not forgotten about him was new.
