i can learn to pity fools as i'm the worst of all. - Penn - November 19, 2020

He's actually just outside of Bramblepoint between the woods and the Caldera.

Redhawk Caldera. They have moved to his Caldera.

Penn seethed at the memory of Figment's conversation with Wraen. He'd stuck around to listen for a while, then stolen away without a word. He knew Wraen wouldn't stick around to look for him before leaving. Maia was in trouble, so she would go. In an un-Penn-like turn of events, he wasn't feeling petty about that. His pettiness was turned elsewhere, towards the Firebirds that had taken up residence now in the one territory he'd loved best.

The young Blackthorn had kept himself out of sight of any Redhawk wolves in the few times he'd come close enough to inspect their borders. He stayed far enough away too that they wouldn't scent him during their rounds as well. He didn't want to be detected, but he wanted to know more. He wanted to know if the whole pack had come, so he could know exactly who to be angry with for stealing his lands. Because obviously that's what he cared about. He wasn't trying to find out if she was with them still. He wasn't stalking around just outside the territory in secret just so he might catch a glimpse of her. He gave no fucks about that. Obviously.

She wasn't there, anyway. Which begged the question... where was she?

Not that he cared.

Obviously.

And for the record, the sudden jolt that spasmed throughout his entire body just then was not because he'd just come across her scent. He'd stepped on something. A... a rock! Yeah, he'd stepped on a rock and it hurt the pad of his paw. And now he had to inspect that rock closer... It smelled like her. A few days old, but still... It was her.

Not that he cared.

...

Obviously.

It took a few minutes, but the emotion he had totally not felt eventually settled and left his mind free to calculate. He paced around for a little while, following her scent here and there. There were a few, but he found himself following the freshest of them until he stopped and looked around at his surroundings. Penn wasn't aware of the Glen or anything else with Moonspear, so it didn't occur to him that it was odd her trail was headed away from the Caldera because it was also going away from her current pack. It just struck him as odd that it was headed away, especially when there was no other wolf accompanying her.

What was she up to?

Penn was intrigued enough now to forget about his hang-ups. He dropped his nose back to the ground and continued to follow. It took him a while--her scent was not the strongest and there were plenty of obstacles to obstruct him. He did his due diligence, but eventually even Penn had to admit that she'd bested them. Her trail went cold, and he couldn't help but think that it was intentionally done. He was actually a little proud, but now more curious than ever.

The Blackthorn turned back after another few hours of hunting, his sights now set back on where he'd begun. Where had the older trails been taking her? Was she not one of the Caldera anymore? In the end, his curiosity over what was going on with Fennec trumped any determination he'd felt to not show that he cared at all about her. Besides, tracking her down didn't necessarily mean that he cared. Just that he was... intrigued, let's say. We'll stick with that.
