the murders in the rue morgue - Avicus - March 16, 2021

there has been a slaughter this day.
a mother rabbit had recently given birth; she had smelled it on one of her patrols. today, the nest had been unguarded, the hare away searching for sustenance. greedy little things, they were—suckling babes.
and she is just as greedy. Avicus sits primly, licking her chops, the only monument to her triumph the bloodied grass and dirt amidst her paws.
she must be to them like the bear was to her. large, broad,
blocking out the sun
but they hadn't fought. just screamed. one by one, she'd welcomed them into her mouth. they were all fat, so tender, so different from the more gamey taste of their elders. a wonderful snack.
now, she waits for their mother to return. her meal will not be complete without its main course.
