new disaster - Meerkat - June 05, 2021

She slipped away from Moonglow’s range without a word, leaving behind the momentary temptation to linger there as both body and mind urged her to seek out that high again. Meerkat crept into some thick woods a little northeast of the spine, certain she could find some poppies with all this lush undergrowth.

When she struck gold (or red, rather), she paid closer attention to the amount of seeds she swallowed, ingesting fewer than last time. She then sat back against a mossy log and waited for the sense of euphoric well-being to kick in... and kick out the intrusive thoughts centering on Bronco, Fennec and their faceless babies.

lost again.

this time thinking of what the rest of his life would look like --

thinking, did it hurt? had she suffered when she slipped away to that other realm?

and when it came time for him, would he hurt too?

he barely noticed meerkat resting against a mossy log; actually, in all reality, he would have passed by her entirely -- if it were not for a distinct scent lingering.

arcturus halted, feeling grief's stranglehold tighten his throat. he surveyed the lump and realized he knew this wolf. "..meerkat?"

It didn’t take long for her heart to run, jump and soar, all negative thoughts melting away beneath the warm glow of her inner sunshine. She sighed and went boneless, ignoring the slight crick in her neck as she stared up at the treetops and the clouds floating by beyond them.

Meerkat didn’t feel quite as overjoyed as last time, just utterly content. Perhaps this was a better dosage. She made note of that, then promptly stopped thinking as she closed her eyes and smiled blissfully into a beam of sunlight that peeked through the foliage to bathe her face.

When someone came toward her, Meerkat didn’t budge. Only when a voice said her name did she bother to roll her head to the side, then sit up partway. She smiled at the black wolf even before recognition fully registered.

Holy buuuuutts, she drawled. No way. It’s... you! She knew him, though his name currently escaped her and Meerkat couldn’t be bothered to fret over that. How are you? Come and sit, she invited, patting the sun-dappled patch of moss beside her.

how sheltered and naive was arcturus that when he came across meerkat and noted how absolutely inattentive of her surroundings she was, he assumed she'd hit her head! he stood near her in quiet shock, visually examining every piece of her for any sign of blunt force, disturbed hair, or matted blood.

but no blood, no cuts -- just this unwavering smile as she stood bathing in a patch of sunlight. if he was smarter or less alarmed, he might have noticed meerkat's pause between it's and you! "are you concussed?" arcturus asked promptly, alarm waves still rippling across him.

She met his question with a slow blink, then a rolling laugh. "What? No!" she rejoined, patting the spot next to her even more emphatically. "C'mon, Arcturus," Meerkat added when his name occurred to her, "park it. I want to hear how you've been. It's been a while, hasn't it?"
