Set the stage - War - June 10, 2021

It was night. Dark, looming and not a good place for War. She had been awakened by the haunted images of blood being spilled by her. She did not understand these images, did not understand the signs for it was all she knew and waking in slight panic was not something she had grown used to yet. Though her body was in panic her face did not show it. She lifted her body up from the sleeping position, the huge female soon began walking instead.

She found a clearing, an open area and this was what she needed, this would be her medicine for sleep. She dug er paw into the soft soil and began drawing with her paws. She did not dig deep, but deep enough so the line was noticeable. She drew a large circle into the soil, turning and drawing she closed the circle and then sat within it.

The scene was set. The ritual was ready, and she just needed her participants. She sat completely still in the night and awaited, her ears pointing forward, listening, waiting for someone to come and she did no move one inch. She was awake, she was ready.

RE: Set the stage - Satsu (Ghost) - June 10, 2021

the call of the cicadas had not diminished within the strath, much to her pleasure.
as night fell satsu had wondered if the familiar song would die out, but it seemed as though the wilderness welcomed them. they had charmed her before her introduction to the saints — and she was glad that they lingered.

it felt like the spirits of her family remained with her, so long as they sang.

within this new han was satsu's redemption; or so she hoped.

sleep would not come to her efforts, and so she roamed her new home. perhaps learning of this place and its people would ease her mind, or tire her body.

when satsu came upon the clearing she thought she was alone. there had been a dragging sound to entice her towards an investigation, however, as she crossed from shadow to exposed grass, the sound ceased. she had thought her hunt had failed; the sight of the monolithic creature ahead caused her to hesitate.

were all the nanben of this place so large? the daimyo came to mind, and then the pale woman (nyra); but this stranger was different from each—colored red, which caught the starlight.

RE: Set the stage - War - June 11, 2021

War waited in the circle, would likely have waited until dawn, but not that much time passed until a female with bright blue eyes came across her path. War’s muscles tensed, her every being springing with excitement. Yes. A participant. She waited for her to come closer and when she did War would offer her a simple request.

”Fight me.”

It was not stated as a question, it wasn’t a challenge or a dare, but more the sound of an order that she threw at the much smaller female. War took a stance within one side of the circle she had drawn and awaited that the other would assume position, take a stance and ready herself. It was not a friendly request, but a need within War. She had to get it out, had to fight and for her that did not mean she had to win or lose. She had just to fight.

A spar.

Whatever the female accepted or not obviously up to her, but should she refuse War’s request she would lounge toward the blue eyes female and attempt to drag her into the circle. Not hurt her, not to draw blood, but to make a point. This was the saints of the dying light, she hadn’t been here long either, but she knew this much.

You could not refuse a fight. You should not.

RE: Set the stage - Satsu (Ghost) - June 11, 2021

against all better judgement, satsu approaches. she lingers around the stranger's periphery.
do they meditate? she wonders.

fight me. commands the giant, making way for satsu in the circle.

satsu, who looked perplexed. she who had been warned by the daimyo to take great care.

the woman shrinks back from the line in the dirt.

a good choice — her silence derives action from the wolf within, a strike that satsu does not anticipate. they reach and grab, no doubt vying for a piece of satsu. demanding something of her she does not feel she can provide.

satsu's summer coat puffs down the central line, her tail a bottle-brush of shock.

i do not fight! countered her fraying voice. at most she was a shrine-maiden in her past life. her brothers, they were the warriors! they followed the samurai's path
— all the way to death!

RE: Set the stage - War - June 11, 2021

”I do no fight!”

Do not fight?

Yes – she fights. She fights for everything, life, food, pups and everything in between. They were all fighting, fighting for something or even someone. This blue-eyed wolf were no different. She fought War to not fight, she fought to not get dragged into the circle, but War did not comply. She would attempt with all her force to drag the female into the fighting pit, before she would let go.

”Learn.”

The red female commands once again. She had to learn, she had to fight, not just for War, but for the battles to come, for the saints and those within it. Fighting was part of the game, part of the world and part of life. She had to learn, and War would teach her the way. She took a stance once again, expecting the other to mirror her. Her legs spread out to balance her weight so she could hold her ground and never tumble. She waited for the other to mirror her, if she did not and tried to run off again War would chase her and drag her back into the circle.

She was learning the hard way tonight.

RE: Set the stage - Satsu (Ghost) - June 11, 2021

all the lessons of her life did not prepare her.

a dancer, when others weren't watching. wise in the history of her people, a carrier of folk tales now lost, as the last of her house.

but a beast? no.

satsu should have left well enough alone. she could have fled from the giant, carried within herself another layer of guilt and shame for it.

the stranger shifted their weight in to a warrior's stance. like her brothers, or the hanshi who served her father.

they commanded that she, learn. and she knew, even before she began to move towards that line in the soil, how important this was.

to back down and show weakness was beneath her, yet she was afraid to face the wrath of the stranger. afraid that she would disgrace her name — and by doing so, the memory of her family.

had her life been reduced to moments like this?

satsu carried herself blithely across that line and then began to pace within the circle, wanting to keep herself as far from reach as she could.

RE: Set the stage - War - June 15, 2021

She accepted. Reluctantly, but accepted.

Good.

She had no other option in this place, she had come here she must have known what she got herself into, at least War thought so. She was smaller than her, sure, but faster and with much to learn.

War would go easy on her tonight.

She paced far away from her, and War charged. Her maws opened into a huge nightmare-ish jaw from the works of fiction. Her teeth glistered with salvia and just as she was about to bite down on the strange opponent, something happened in her head. Flashes of violence, blood, gore it all meshed together and became like a cinematic show that ran too many movies at once.

War stopped dead in her track, inches from the stranger, immobilized she looked forward, like a computer that had been stopped in its track and told to reboot, she stood silently, an empty look in her eyes and maws open just inches from the female. Salvia was dripping from her teeth and lips and suddenly War felt a bolt within. She closed her jaws and took a step backward to ready herself again.

What was this?

She shook her head. Had. To. Stop. It.

She growled and turned toward the female again, this time snapping hard onto whatever was within grasp. If the female had not moved or counter attacked, War would grab on to whatever was closest to her, and she would hold on with vigor. She would not let go if her jaws got a hold of anything.

War was in distress, but you couldn’t tell by looking at her. She felt like going mad. Mad as a hatter.

RE: Set the stage - Satsu (Ghost) - June 29, 2021

the giant could move quickly with enough force behind each step to crater the earth, or so satsu predicted. she would avoid as best she could, utilizing the dancing steps her own body employed. become like water — that was a lesson her brothers had learned and she, eavesdropping, had stolen from them.
as satsu presented herself before the giant, there came the sudden forthrightness of their lunge, the snapping of their teeth. she anticipated some of this and sagged back, down, away; but those teeth were still too close for comfort and satsu felt the blood in her veins turn thick and cold.
the stranger slowed too. as if frozen for a moment, enabling satsu to round about the circle and sulk to a safe point behind them.

RE: Set the stage - War - June 30, 2021

The girl moved out of the way and War stood silently for moments as she barely noticed she had moved. When War finally came to her senses she noticed the girl moved out of the circle. War growled and with a loud thunderous sound she boomed at the woman. ”NO” She moved forward again and the girl evaded once more. War was getting tired of this nonsense. This was a fight, a spar and all the girl wanted was to evade her. She growled again.

”Come at me.” She awaited the attack, stood ready for her and did not show any signs that she would move out of the way if the woman came at her. She didn’t need to know her game to realize that the girl was inexperienced, and she would let her attack her.

”I will teach you.”

War was willing to offer the sanity of her own training to make this girl a warrior. The saints didn’t need weaklings like her who refused a fight, the saints needed someone strong, someone who wouldn’t hesitate when the time came to show loyalty to the pack. This girl weren’t it. Not yet.

She would make her warrior.

RE: Set the stage - Satsu (Ghost) - June 30, 2021

the bellow of the beast froze satsu in place; like the thundering of hooves on a mountain.
come at me, i will teach you.

this must be her choice, not one that is thrust upon her!
no! satsu snapped.
who are you to decide this for me?! but she shouted not at war, for war was not there for her in that moment. she saw the usurper to her father's han for a moment longer.

at some point in her panic satsu had stopped her roaming. she faced the wardog within range of attack. the line of the circle being their only separation.
