What I thought were faces - Sobo - January 08, 2022

The dream came again.

Sobo stood on the cliffs, as before, looking down at the waves that flung themselves carelessly into the stone wall. Spray flew up to tickle his face in sharp contrast to the slicing of the wind as it cut past him. Stones stood out dark against the raging of the sea. Lightning flashed—

There were two voices this time. Mireille calling out his name from somewhere where the sea was strong, and a second voice twining with it, rising and falling in volume. Come to me, it cried. He squinted out to the ocean, illuminated by another flash, and tried to make sense of it. The voice was different, but was something his sister might call...

Like a bell tolling in his mind, suddenly he was struck with the compulsion to turn his head. Another crack of thunder and another brilliant flash of lightning revealed a shape in the sea—some distance beyond Sapphique, but not unreachable. Come to me, the voice said again, much louder this time, drawing him to that dark rock out in the sea.

When Sobo awoke some time later, the first thing he did was trot out to the cliffs, right about where he had been standing in his dream. When he turned his head toward the Sound, there it was — a small island, unassuming and seemingly inhospitable, though he could not make out any details from such a distance. He licked his lips nervously.

The loa. It had to be the loa. They wanted him to notice that island. Could it be that Mireille was stranded there? His sister was a strong swimmer, like all of their ilk, but if she had been injured...

He resolved to check out that island as soon as he could.
