Take it in stride - Ensio - April 07, 2022

OOC: For @Gabriele

Ensio stole away from Atautsikut for a short while. He was thrilled with his new mountain home and there was still much left to be discovered. But there was more, beyond the reaches of their borders to be found as well. He felt it important to try and map out the area. His mission wasn't just purely for scouting, either. As he entered a dense forest littered with feathers and the scent of birds, his ambitions turned to hunting.

He watched and examined the behavior of the brown and white feathered birds. He circled the vicinity in which they were foraging slowly. Contemplating whether or not they were truly worth the effort of a chase. The yearling had little to no experience in bird catching. Given their small size, the meat they would yield may not be worthwhile. He snorted, pressing on further in the forest, to see what else might cross his path.

At a distance from where the birds idly plucked at the forest floor, the yearling watched them. He was lazily leaned against the trunk of a tree. His eyes were half-lidded.
For a moment he thought to chase the birds down. Perhaps he would be lucky enough to actually catch one. Comical, he thought with a sigh. He could hardly catch a beetle.
His ears twitched when he heard the sound of someone approach. Yellow eyes were led beyond the birds and towards a wandering young boy. He’d stopped to stare at the birds as well, only to move on with a snort.
Just as the boy turned his back, he too decided to leave. Only his exit wasn’t as quiet. The sound of his body scraping up against bark startled the birds and sent them fleeing towards him. He stumbled over them as they rushed past his paws.
If the boy hadn’t noticed him before he certainly would now.

Where there had been little interest in the birds, now it rose anew as they took off in a noisy crowd of wings and feathers. He whirled, icy eyes pinned on the group. In them was sparked the primal instinct to lunge into action.

And so he did. He plowed forward, to chase. To snap and grab randomly with his jaws. There was no strategy. Not even the real intent of a serious hunt. Ensio was just trying his luck. He had seen a good opportunity with the fleeing birds wedged between him and the other wolf. He took it.
