Crows... they're an omen, aren't they? - Reyes (Ghost) - April 07, 2022

He followed the highlands, avoiding the nearby forest for the sake of time. It felt good to be running in the open fields with the sun on his back, the wind in his fur. It was a clear day with a sharp wind whipping across his face, but Reyes didn't see the harm in it. He felt free out here compared to the tension that Teya brought out of him.

She'd told him he'd be gone a week, but he was making good time. In the days to follow, Reyes could at least enjoy some alone time while he waited for the representative from Blackwater; he was meant to travel to a particular field and camp there in wait of them.

As Reyes came upon a wide swath of forest, he ducked among the trees and meandered along, spying a few deer paths, signs of rabbits, and a couple empty burrows which might've belonged to foxes or badgers for all he could tell; but he didn't pursue anything.

and heshe was pursuing hunting chasing running and every other thought that hammered within herhis brain with each striking of long paws against dried earth and each traitorous sway of the hunted so close so close just out-within reach right there before the snout.

the pronghorn fawn's balance was solid enough for it to run fast but hot fear and a child's stamina had it losing the chase. so close so close so close so-

the change from bright light to muted shadow had himher - panting aching muscles burning breath escaping - slowing just for a moment to see that the hunt had led herhim into a blackened woodland of ash kicked up high by both prey and hunteress but blinding and choking only
the hunteress who had to had to

stop

once shehe did so, heshe panted, heaved, heart drumming bam bam bam every muscle like fresh nettleburns limbs shaking an unable to support the trunk and heshe fell-

collapsed onto herhis side, tongue loling out and tasting wet and beaten ash. trough wavering vision the greyhound saw herhis quarry escape.

There was an eruption of sound from somewhere aft, drawing Reyes' attention immediately. He moved as if possessed by a pointing hound's spirit; eyes wide, head up, ears pivoting to follow that sound as it flowed rhythmically from spot to spot. His pace increased as the sound got louder, until a pronghorn came bursting from cover.

It saw him and pivoted sharply; it was then Reyes saw something similar in build, but somehow lower-slung and almost supine, lunging behind it. It looked like a deer in its own right and held the colors of knotted bark across its body. There was no time to decide what to do — he ploughed through the green after both creatures.

The pronghorn was young and fleet-footed. It knew this forest better than Reyes and was soon dispersing from the pursuit and bounding for freedom. The other shape — the emaciated looking doe — collapsed not long after that, eyes seemingly following the escaping shape.

Reyes circled back when he found he could not keep up with the true target; not knowing that the other was a canine, only a reedy thing too sick to fight back, he descended upon it immediately and made to reach for its throat.
