aquila chrysaetos - Reki - September 03, 2022

The bird had been a flash of gold, strong like a sunbeam, and he remembered ducking away from it immediately — then a squeeze, and weightlessness. The cries of his mother swiftly curtailed as he'd blacked-out from the destabilizing sensation of fear.

That had been some time ago. It had been brief, too; the blackness enveloped him and then he was awake again, kicking, squirming, an unwilling participant in what would've been dinner, with Requiem as the main course. The bird might have thought him dead already and been caught by surprise — whatever the case, it was gone now, and he was alive.

A child of only a few months, crying out with a keen note for mother.

who the boy received was augur.

he hunted for @Sunday Morning, returning to her den up to four times a day with meals. he hunted also for the older cubs at the rendezvous.

therefore the hunter was keenly aware of crying little ones. his paternal instinct was roused. the giant wolf swung back his ears and approached with a snuffling push of his muzzle.

A shape manifested from a line of trees, formed of autumn mist. Towering, pale. A man who Requiem did not recognize - but a man nonetheless.

The grateful boy rushed towards the reaching snout and before he could help himself, wedged his own nose against the man's cheek. A plea for food.

His tail was tucked yet his hips twitched side to side like a nervous, happy worm.

the clawan rumbled. the touch to his mouth brought food for the boy, chunks of elk meat he had carried from a kill felled days ago.

but it would do.

he licked saliva from his jaws, then gave a low croon for @Prophet or @Avicus. blood eyes and red woman must decide.

their pups would number nine if they took him. and that would be nine mouths unable to shed enough blood until spring.

but instinct kept him close, a guardian over the young of his own kind.

There was suddenly food! Sharp-smelling and hot.

The boy threw himself upon it and ate as quickly as he could, too busy filling his empty belly to pay attention to his surroundings. The man, those he called, forgotten while he fed his more dire need.

RE: aquila chrysaetos - Avicus - September 06, 2022

something in the boy sparks familiarity, though she can't place it even as she comes closer. summoned from rabbit hunting by Augur's call, she is perturbed but her interest piqued, indigo gaze sweeping along the rounded lines of the child, gorging himself.

alone? Avicus asks, not directing the question to either one in particular. whoever wanted to answer could do so. she figures as much, but keeps her attention slightly upon the periphery, in case an unfamiliar adult should emerge.

she squints at the pup. he's not much younger than her own children—perhaps even a peer.

she can't detect any other scents of use for identification.

red woman appeared. he reached to pass a respectful lick along her jawline.

he snuffled over the boy. nothing of other wolves.

but he turned sidelong, indicating that he would go and search if red woman ordered it.

she was right to be careful.

Meat made him woozy - sleepy and sluggish, but the boy was animated when a woman appeared. She spoke and he made a small noise, almost pleading, and waddled close to her.

Ma? He sniffed at her and found wild scents, none familiar, and shrank back again. A look spared to the pale man, then the dirt shyly.

RE: aquila chrysaetos - Avicus - September 20, 2022

she accepts Augur's greeting with a faint smile, which fades as the boy addresses her with one startling word—

"Ma?"

of course she isn't, but Avicus is loath to pass up the opportunity. mmm, she murmurs, and draws closer to the young wolf, suppressing the urge to pass her tongue over his head to soothe him.

alone, and too young for it.

come, she orders, voice firm but soft, talking to both of them now. she begins to pad deeper into the territory, head tilted to watch them follow. they'll escort the boy to the rendezvous, where he can rest—and then they can figure out what to do with this newest predicament.

a soft sound.

augur followed, bringing up the rear. another child for the rise, already accepted by way of his youth.

another hunter for the cold spring. he was content.
