Once there was a way to get back home - RIP Bronco - September 07, 2022

Following his nose down the slope of the Caldera, Bronco made his way to Bramblepoint, where he hoped to find some rabbits. The thicket offered them ideal protection from flying predators, but it was in the thicket that their numbers grew large- and drew his attention as a hunter.

It surprised him, though, to find a section of the thicket with shorter plants, a variety of plants that he wouldn’t have expected to grow in the area. Fresh earth about the base of a couple plants was odd to see, but it was something he recognized immediately.

He sniffed about until he found just the faintest trace of her scent. He lifted his head and scented the wind, but it chose to trifle with him, and be still. This was definitely one of Fennec’s gardens…And someone was tending to it.

Something stirred in his chest. Maybe this was her way of coming to be just a little bit closer.

He thought if he’d added something, it might make her abandon the garden, and he didn’t want that. He did find something to add, though it wasn’t a plant. He’d found an owl feather- long and white- and he stick it in the ground next to one of her plants. She might miss it entirely or write it off as chance.

He left her garden, and began to track through the brambles again, searching for rabbit trails.

this can be a cameo! Whichever <3

She had a few more to transplant. The garden in Mereo was going well, but there were a couple she wasn't sure about moving. The soil felt wrong, and she wanted to take more with her to be sure they'd grow. She brought the same tattered hide and heaped it with dirt before moving a few of the sprouts. That was when she felt the feather.

Fennec froze. It was probably a coincidence, but of course her mind went there first. She'd spent more time with ravens but Bronco always preferred owls. She'd had some of these a while back, gifts, but she'd left them behind along with everything else. She should leave this one too.

But when she lifted her haul to head towards home, the feather was gone, tucked along the edge of the dirt she carried. No one had to know what it was, or why she had it. She couldn't bring herself to leave it behind.

His path and the hunt took him the better part of a hunt to complete, and he wound up finally chasing down a beautiful male pheasant on the Western edge of the bramble. The pheasant’s feathers were lovely and soft- and reminded him of the craft of making pelts that he’d experienced while living with Kukutux.

He would have to pay her a visit soon- but when he did, he would bring her something fresh and soft as a gift, and an apology for having been so distant.

He made his way back to the Caldera and by chance, came upon Fennec’s garden again. This time, her scent was strong- he’d only just missed her. He knew better than to chase after her now- but he noticed, with a smile, that the feather was gone. Not pulled out and discarded, but gone. Had she taken it with her? It possibly could have just blown off, but still.

From the beautiful pheasant he plucked three of its longest, shiniest tail feathers. Each he stuck in the ground firmly, thinking that if Fennec had been by today, she might not visit again until days later. Maybe the wind would take them, but maybe it was sheltered enough.

His gifts left, he headed for home with the pheasant in his clutch.
