In this world, it's just us - Reverie - January 06, 2023

Reverie ran for Kvarsheim in the end. She just didn't make it that far.
After awhile the hurt had started to seep in, and it was when she came to the frozen wetlands and first broke through the thin ice that she suddenly found it overwhelming. Had she ever been hurt this badly before? She wondered if she was handling the pain well. Maybe she wasn't, maybe she ought to be able to take another step.
She broke the ice again, seeing no other path forward. Again, and she thought she was doing well. She was doing well, until she looked down and found that the water was red in her wake, red all around her. Her stomach flipped and she stopped, swallowing hard because throwing up into the water she had to walk through didn't sound like a great idea. None of her ideas had been great lately, it seemed. First with Lestan, who probably thought her childish and impulsive after their last conversation; then with Sadey, who probably had a healer to take care of her already. Such a terrible wound would have killed her otherwise, wouldn't it? And what would Lestan think if he knew what she'd done? She'd only wanted to help; she hadn't thought of anything else.
It was funny, how easily those thoughts came. Like this was any other day. She wasn't hurt, she was fine, she was out on a walk. It was a little easier after that, for a time.
But then it got harder, until she couldn't think of anything but the pain and how nice it would be to stop for awhile. Not for long. Just a few minutes. She found a dry place, a tiny island among the icy murk, and decided maybe a few hours would be okay. It was getting dark, though, and it couldn't hurt to spend the night, could it? She would need rest.
She realized she didn't feel cold anymore, but it didn't seem pressing. She wondered when Rose would come get her for bedtime, or maybe Tybault. They'd always had to come fetch her; she could never keep track of the time, or stay where she was supposed to be. It just wasn't in her nature. Even before...
She closed her eyes, fighting the break in her reality. There was no before. Nothing happened. She was safe. Someone was coming for her.
