fleischesser - Mahler - January 24, 2023

tracking trip for the boys!

while a bear ravaged the coastline, paleo was experiencing a time of good change.
today mahler trekked with @Emmerich and @Siku from the limits of the hollow. they were on the trail of a lame elk. presently the advisor halted them at the base of the mountain.
"sehen," he grunted to the boys, showing the new dung and tufts of hair. "es ging aufwärts."
he motioned as he spoke, and directed the young hunters upward into the ridges, following suit in their wake.

Their tracking journey had livened Emmerich considerably. He trotted quickly alongside his father and Siku, pausing to check at scents he did not recognize. Even the crispness of the air did little to phase him. Sunyellow eyes were fixed on the path ahead.

They stalked a lame elk. The scent was unique to the white-hooded guardian. He was eager to try anything with his father. It usually took little persuasion to get the boy in on any task that needed doing. He had grown into a strong sense of duty to Paleo and his parents. Hunting and patrolling were among his favorite things to do with Mahler.

Emmerich noted the scat and hair left by their prey. When prompted to go ahead, he cast one look to Siku before darting forward.

he did not say just how happy he was to go with his father and brother of paleo.

perhaps he did not need to say such. yet he could not stop his head from filling with a million thoughts as they trekked the land beyond the hollow. he thought of trades to come with germanicus and the mystical woman he had been meant to teach.

he nearly missed the instruction from mahler!

a blush rose to his cheeks, but his brother was off and siku was quick to follow on gangly legs. so the new line of order in their tracking would be emmerich at the helm, siku sandwiched between and mahler dutifully behind them.

his nostrils flared for other fresh signs of the elk.

the boys ranged ahead. mahler took a moment to gaze at the wintry draping of the land around them. "be careful," the man chuffed as he rejoined siku, pitching voice for emmerich to hear also. "a lamed animal can be the most dangerous."
it was unlikely that without the skill of a fourth wolf, they could take an elk today.
but stranger things had happened.
the man's amethyst eyes glowed with anticipation, and in the company of his sons, he felt younger. hale.

RE: fleischesser - Emmerich - February 08, 2023

It felt good to run.

Emmerich heard his father’s warning and his ear swiveled back to acknowledge the possibility of that threat. They would need some sense of care. There was no need to risk the injury. No matter how he wanted to rush forward, his mind was on his father and Siku.

The young guardian slowed. His nose searched for further sign of their target. The cold was eased by the pace he had set. Drawing his snout back, he looked to see if the other two were far behind.

RE: fleischesser - Siku - February 16, 2023

the words of warning were good to hear.

especially because he had not hunted like this before — and like his brother, he looked for more signs. there, a groove in the earth, he offered a soft chuff. it seemed as if it had struggled here before it continued onward.

he motioned for his brother to come over, to see it and make of it what he would.

RE: fleischesser - Mahler - February 22, 2023

the boys heeded, and gathered, and mahler found himself watching them with a strange sense of wistfulness.
the first glissade of thinking upon earlier times. younger times. and look now, he a man who had wrought sorrow and been carved by it, now lived to a great age with children to teach.
mahler waved his tail and slowly approached to see what siku had found.

RE: fleischesser - Emmerich - February 28, 2023

Siku’s voice drew the young guardian’s attention. Emmerich had not grown into a comfortable state enough to tease his new brother. He looked at the speckled boy with softness in his hawkish eyes. He wanted the young healer to feel love before he felt the playfulness that dwelled in Emmerich and Anselm and even Mahler, when he found himself in the mood.

Quick white paws carried the boy toward Siku, and he breathed heavily as he brushed his shoulder against the paler boy. The groove in the earth was a good sign. A healer and maybe even a skilled hunter. It seemed that the soft-spoken boy had a number of talents.

Good find, Siku, he whispered with a smile.

RE: fleischesser - Siku - March 02, 2023

his brother gave him gentle praise and he could not stop the eager swaying of his tail. child-like in that moment and feeling a spring blossom of pride.

mahler joined them and it was with the confidence from emmerich that he felt prepared to give a report.

tone hushed in case the beast was still near.

it struggled here, look. a soft sweeping motion over the track. was he wrong? but it kept on still.

RE: fleischesser - Mahler - March 12, 2023

the boy had found the mark of the animal which had fallen. mahler nodded. "ja, siku," he confirmed. lowering his muzzle he gestured to the sprinkling of hairs in the snow. a cursory sniff. "some time ago. it vill not be able to go far."
the man paced on, motioning his sons along, and pointed now toward a splotch of red in the snow. it was injured. he wondered what wolf had come hunting so close to paleo.

RE: fleischesser - Emmerich - March 23, 2023

Emmerich was impressed by Siku’s tracking skills. The boy must have been a skilled hunter, surely. He saw where their target had stumbled but continued forward. Mahler confirmed that this had been accurately deduced. The gargoyle said that it would not go far.

The young guardian cast his eyes toward the disturbance in the trail. He could see the pace of the animal in the marks. Emmerich followed the trail, yellow eyes tracing the steps that had been made.

Padding forward, he sniffed to draw the scent of their prey into his senses. The young wolf looked for Siku, hoping that he would be the one to lead them on.

RE: fleischesser - Mahler - April 14, 2023

we can continue this or finish up? <3

siku padded ahead in his usual quiet. mahler followed, keeping eyes alert for the animal.
he showed the boys where the great antlers had scratched the branches, the trunks, the earth. he pointed out where the beast had fallen again, and slid in the mud.
"not long now."
