We've had our fun, now your sugar makes me sick - Annorak - March 27, 2023

Khaba had left @Zharille to sleep in the den he'd dug.

Off to hunt he went, returning a time later with the body of a hare and the slimy, lifeless fish. Pregnant women were picky, he imagined. At least with these slim pickings, she had some choice of her feast.

Setting them by her, he took a step or two back. When there was distance, he barked—an attempt only to waken, not frighten her. This meal wouldn't remain fresh for long, and he intended for her to eat it as it was now. Otherwise, his hunt would have been (mostly) all for naught.

there was no choice to be made. food was offered, and zharille would eat.

she had found some things were a struggle to consume, others turned her stomach just by the smell, but she persisted eventually. everything that could be eaten, would be. she devoured fish brought to her by selena; she would just as easily consume what khaba left behind.

he left before she had begun eating, and when he returned he would find her gnawing on bones (if the offerings had bones with which to do so) or a fish head, trying to break down every bit of sustenance to fill her impressive gut.

He had returned a time later, having left her privacy to eat, to find a pile of bones set at her feet. Some of which she gnawed on.

Announcing his presence with a low, faint chuffed, he approached slow, steps seeking to know if whether she accepted his company.

If she didn't demand for him to leave, the shadowed giant would sit beside her laying form.

Her fur had become a bit disheveled during her slumber. Khaba intended to lean over and gently groom her, should she allow this also. It was better for a leader to have a decent appearance, and if no one else, he wanted to see the beauty beneath her spiked fur.

she continues to gnaw at the fish head, which thus far has become a commonplace sight now for the lake wolf, and doesn't change her focus when khaba comes closer. it is only after he begins picking at her fur, and combing it, and giving her physical affection (or something close to it) that she gets antsy.

at first she tolerates it. the longer he works at her fur, the more she twitches - her shoulder, when he's there; her scruff shakes, her nose wrinkles. zharille is incrementally pugnacious, resisting the attention as a child might resist the attention of a caring parent.

She was accepting towards his actions for a time. But after a few short minutes, he noted the change in her behavior.

Constant twitching motions, perhaps followed by small noises of distaste.

He hadn't come to irritate her, so he wouldn't. After a final swipe of his tongue against her ear, he pulled away. But he did not move from her side. Instead, he remained, giving a few licks to his own fur.

Though Khaba wasn't always the most well groomed, he would occasionally take a swing at the dust and dirt that clung to his coat. Now seemed the right time to do this, given how his tongue was already dirtied and that Zharille no longer had interest in his cleaning services.
