chani's immediate world contained many faces. there was maman. sè. frè. matant. granmè.
there were others and she would know their roles but for now most of those faces were that of women, and so began the shaping of sapphique's consistent reality in her heart.
it was for her sister she squalled now, for she had seen a butterfly in the meadow outside the den, and wanted it, and cried for it in a loud tantrum.
