Oh, we can burn it and leave - Mae - June 16, 2023

Mae had changed quite a bit in the aftermath of her head injury. She was subdued. She avoided @Akavir. Mostly, she kept close to @Jakub and @Nicodem, who now had the opportunity to enjoy an unprecedented softness from their sister. Not once had she bitten them, or smacked them, or otherwise tried to bully them since the tree incident.

But neither did she take much joy in the world. She was playing idly with some strange rock she'd found, a curious sunset-hued thing that seemed to glow under the sunlight. A piece of amber, left behind by a former packmate she had known from birth but would never remember. To Mae, it was only another oddity of the wilds. She pawed it back and forth across the ground, staring at it with dull eyes. There was appreciation in her for the beauty of it, but Mae was nonetheless very tired and very sad for one so young.

Arric was racked with guilt. He hadn't meant for the little shithead to get hurt and she was different. He wasn't blind to it.

He tilted his head in surprise when he found her. And his heart tightened. He settled to his haunches.

Hey shithead. he called out gently.

But Mae always had a smile for Arric, and she gave that to him now, tail wagging gently behind her when he called out. Shitface! She called back, a little proud of her innovation, but she didn't get up.

Instead she reached out with one paw to push the piece of amber forward, to show Arric this new treasure she'd found. Thus far she had kept it to herself, hovering possessively over it while she played and burying it when it was time to set it aside. Mae desperately did not want it lost or stolen. But she trusted Arric well enough, and wanted to share the strange beauty of it with him.

He chuckled and shook his head. Shitface eh.

He moved closer to her and studied what she was doing, but he didn't have to wait long for her share.

He bent his nose down with a smile. Amber. Its pretty. What you gonna do with it mae mae?

Amber. Mae was deeply pleased to know the name of her treasure, but at Arric's question her expression fell into one of deep thought. She wasn't sure; she hadn't thought of doing anything with it, exactly. It was nice to look at, but what else could it do?

Keep it, She said after a few seconds, shrugging. Then she sniffed it over, searching for some kind of hint as to what else it might be useful for. Not food. Mae muttered, mostly to herself. Jussa rock.

Arric studied the rock. Thinking hard on information. Some wolves held great significan in rock even so far as to worship them. He didn't want to teach maemae that exactly, but.

Its a pretty rock though and some wolves say you can carry it around for luck. Uncle Arric get you a fur that you put it in yea? One of those bastard squirrels.
