Fishing - Ravin - November 27, 2023

Ravin, still a boy but nearing adulthood now, decided to head out to the water to try and learn to fish. His sister astera was going to teach him but she’s not been seen since she got swept away…

He hoped someone else would come and teach him but if not he’d try on his own to learn

She was exhausted by the time she returned home from another search, disappointed in having found no trace of either girl yet. She patrolled Ankyra Sound, figuring it might be the most familiar place for Astera- but had had no luck. Upset and tired, she went through the tunnel toward the beach, hoping she could find a snack that might help her bury her emotions.

Down by the beach she found Ravin, and she tried to bring a brave smile to her lips. It hadn't been easy on him either, losing his sister and his cousin. She paused to rub her face with a paw, to try and wipe away the sleepy seeds from the corners of her eyes, and pulled a tired smile to her lips. "Ello Ravin. I be lookin' for somet'ing to eat. You want to 'elp me?" She asked.

was hoping for suzu <3

Ravin nodded. "I want to learn to fish. But i dont know how. Can you teach me?" He asked politely.

"Of course!" Suzu said, flashing her brother a grin. And while the dangers were many for those who sought to hunt in the wildest waters, the yield was plenty too- delicious, nutritious and attainable even for those who were not as physically fit as others.

Ravin likely wanted to learn how to fish right out in the ocean- but Suzu had another idea. "Do you know, I once 'ad a great fish-catcher, a net I built between two large rocks...So when de tide come in, de fish swim up an' over, but when de tide goes out, de fish get caught in it, an can' be picked up easy-peasy from de net. It 'as long since been torn down by de waves but...Would you like to 'elp me build another?" It had been her pride and joy, and had taken weeks to build. The yield had been quite decent, once it had gathered enough kelp to form a worthy net, and she liked the idea of scavenging her net once again.

"I would love to help, but perhaps I could learn how to fish with my own mouth and paws first? Then we can build another net? It sounds like a cool idea but I would love to know how to fish without another tool." Ravin replied softly.

She maintained a smile, though she dreaded the fact that he wasn't going to let her choose the easier activity. She tried not to seem too reluctant when she nodded and gestured with a tilt of her chin toward an inlet away from the rocks, where the waves came in smoothly against the shore. "Come. We practice in de easy waters," She said, turning to glance momentarily toward the strand of the beach where the tide pools were, almost longingly before she smiled again, and began to lead him away.

"We will start first wid teachin' you 'ow to grab t'ings from under water. What you see on de surface is not always de same size as what you see, an' it is sometimes further dan you t'ink," She explained. "Somet'ing might make you t'ink 'ah! Dis be easy, is only a couple inches under de water but uhhhhh uh!'" She said, with a shake of her head. "You bob your 'ead under, an' all of de sudden you can't even reach de sand between your paws. It is like an illusion," She said. "We'll practice first wid....Dis rock!" She said, selecting a small, perfectly smoothe white rock from the beach. "I will toss id in de shawwowsh, an' you get it, hnn?" She explained as well as she could with the rock still in her mouth.

With a swift, deft gesture, she lobbed it only a few feet past the wet line on the beach, where she felt the water would be shallow enough so that Ravin could grab the rock without having to swim or dive. 'G'wan, fetch!" She laughed.

Ravin nodded intently as she explained everything and he took it all in. Then when she dropped the rock in he plunged his head in the water without hesitation and felt out the rock, grabbing it with his teeth, which was a bit hard as it was sort-of slippery, and pulled it out. He dropped it on the sand and caught his breath.
