when at night upon my pillow lie - Fallen Sun - February 02, 2024

@Hototo

Fallen Sun had caught a rabbit, as was prevalent even if it were time of winter's cold embrace. Once, though he didn't understand it, he'd been called Rabbit.

Such a long time ago.

Today, he sought the company of a new wolf; a new male to moonpack. Perhaps they could share a meal.

Hototo figured that he should probably meet with everyone in the pack. Walking along the icy snow now, he put his nose close to the ground to find one of the members’ scents. Taking a deep sniff, he didn’t pick up anything at first, but then the smell of the freshest ice from the top of a glacier popped into his head. It smelled absolutely wonderful! More scents came in: the minty earthy scent of evergreen and the mild aroma of a springtime wildflower.

Hototo rushed toward the scent, excited to meet someone new! When he arrived at where the scent came from, he saw the wolf known as “Fallen Sun”. His fur was truly magnificent, a bright sheen of sunset red fur contrasting with the bright white snow. Dutch told Hototo about Fallen Sun from a previous visit, how fallen couldn’t speak but was willing to learn from other people. Excited as he was about meeting new people, he couldn’t help but feel nervous that Fallen Sun wouldn’t be able to understand him.

Panting from the excursion, Hototo strode up to Fallen Sun and said with a thick southern accent “Howdy Mr. Fallen Sun! The name’s Hototo! I gotta say, you smell as good as a rose dipped in honey! Is that your natural scent?”

short because phone post :>

huhoto? the red man tilted his head and pondered this.

Hey.

That sounded very correct.

huhoto! he wuffed again, his muzzle snapping with every bark. His elbows hit the powdersnow and he barked the name over and over again, almost knocking the lad over in his excitement.

hhui! his own greeting came from a voice roughed by lack of use, but sounding like summer rain and spring meadows.

A look of confusion came across Hototo's face as Fallen Sun kept repeating his name over and over again. "I mean...it's HO-to-to, but sure, give him a win!" Hototo thought to himself, a smile replacing his puzzled look.

Getting almost as excited just from Fallen Sun's own glee, Hototo laughed and congratulated him. "Yeah, that's right, Hototo!" Hototo said, pointing to himself.
Trying to replicate Fallen Sun's own greeting, he replied. “Hu-huh…Hahui Fallen Sun!” His accent making it almost impossible to pronounce.

Hototo looked over and noticed that there was a dead rabbit. “Hey, you hungry? Wanna eat?” Hototo said, pointing over to the meat.

This was the absolute best day of his life and he could say that because very few others in this land had a name that was easily pronounced by his throat.

His excitement continued and he ran a circle around the pronounceable wolf, before stopping in his tracks and actually paying attention to what he was saying.

Eat?

Yah! he barked.

Oh, this was epic.

Ripping the rabbit in half, Hototo made sure that both himself and his new friend would get their fair share of meat. Cutting away from manners and niceties, Hototo devoured  the red meat, with Bits of flesh and bone flying off.

Hototo knew that having a discussion was going to be very difficult for Fallen Sun. So instead, he figured he’d have some fun. Getting up from the ground, Hototo said, “Thanks for the meal!”. He grabbed the last remaining rabbit thigh and asked Fallen Sun “You wanna play a game? I think it’s called “Tug”. I grab one end, you grab the other end. We both pull as hard as we can, and whoever lets go first loses! What do you say?”

but Fallen's eyes were directly on the rabbit's leg, even after finishing his half of the hare.

It hung teasingly from Hototo's jaws, so much so that the red man became visibly anxious to get a piece of it. He was oblivious to his words, as explanations didn't necessarily land on a wolf who understood little of the Words around him.

The sunset man, however, leaned forward to snap questioningly at the leg. Not touching it, just... asking.

Hototo completely gave into the sunset man's puppy dog eyes. Without another word, he threw the leg over to Fallen Sun. "Okay, I'll just have to teach him that later." Laughing to himself. Instead, he tried to communicate in the universal language of play. He walked over to Fallen Sun and did a quick play bow. He bounded in a quick circle, tongue drooping out of his mouth indicating that he wanted to have a good chase.

His tail wagged. Play? He could play!

Sunset man dipped down in a play bow of his own, nipping softly at Hototo's ankles. He could run, Fallen Sun could chase! He was really good at it! Wait and see, Hototo!

He yipped loudly as Fallen nipped at Hototo's ankles. "I haven't had this much fun since I was a young pup!" Thinking to himself.

Twisting around, kicking up snow right into Fallen's muzzle in the process, Hototo sprinted off towards the frozen lake. He zigzagged around the frost covered pine trees, trying to gain some distance between the two. Playful barks came as Hototo jumped over fallen trees and ducked under branches and bushes.

Try as he might, Hototo couldn't shake the red furred blur. "I don't think I have much left in me." He thought losing momentum as he ran towards the lake.

see? Told you. u. u

The sunset man sneezed as snow was kicked into his face, but nevertheless, sprang on youthful feet to catch up!

All that time spent chasing his sisters (he had sisters?) through his wooded wonderland when he was a pup came in mighty handy in this new land, didn't it?

He jumped with ease, and chased Ho-to-to around the forest. Even going as far as to launch himself off a fallen log with forelegs outstretched to catch him!

A trail of laughing barks followed him.

I never doubted you for a second!

Fallen completely leaped over the huge log and jumped right on top of Hototo. Exploding in a fit of laughter, Hototo tried to scramble away from Fallen. Trying to make it clear for Fallen, Hototo pointed to him and said "Ok, YOU WIN! YOU WIN!". Hototo brushed himself off and tried to recover some of his dignity back.

As he was standing back up, he had an idea. Pointing to himself first, Hototo said "Hototo." He then pointed then put his paw on Fallen Sun and said "Leapfrog.", trying to indicate that he wanted to give Fallen Sun the nickname Leapfrog.
