she wasn't a young woman, had something tight and stern about her face, off-putting. had that black fur and those purple eyes, too, like the Shadow of his earliest thoughts.
he took it as a sign.

the man was indeed a sorry sight, younger than she but with a heaviness to his voice which belied this.
