alluvium - Selenia - April 13, 2024

the wolves continued to gather.

it added a fierce tension to what should be the early and carefree days of @Silverbirch's life.

selenia kept her foal far from the bison now, and thus the wolves. today she led the filly on a more playful canter, seeking out the newly fruiting grass among the golden prairie foliage.

Something agitated the mares, something that translated to the child with the flick of ears, the stomping of their massive feet and the way they stiffened occasionally, and all looked off in different directions for what seemed like ages.

She caught the scent herself once, something that smelled unnatural and made her wrinkle her nose.

She moved alongside her mother, kicking up her heels with a little filly squeal as they moved along, and she too began to investigate the green ground, imitating her mother as she began to tear out bits of dried clover with her lips.

she grinned, nosing silverbirch and showing her how the roots of the clover were quite tender.

spring had turned the hoshor plains to a lake of gold punctuated by swathes of green. the horses moved along these small trails, and selenia led a new canter from each clearing to another, nosing playfully at her baby and encouraging silverbirch's exploration.

Every discovery sparked a multitude of expressions from the goal. She shied away from the clack of her own hooves against stone, blew a snort at a petal that tickled her nostril, and squealed for seemingly no reason whatsoever when she caught her own shadow in the corner of her eye.

Her mother was a constant source of information, entertainment and reassurance- Silverbirch kept one ear toward her mother at all times, waiting for behavioral cues as they explored the plains together.

selenia was charmed, laughing at all of her foal's antics. the world was great and vast, and she enjoyed watching silverbirch engage her explorative nature.

new grass paused the mare, but before she bent to eat, she indicated the cluster of butterfly eggs on the underside of one blade, avoiding it with her sensitive muzzle as she moved now to graze.
