the dancing lights - Tautukpik - April 27, 2024

The boy slept for long periods and only woke to eat, and even when bothered by a sister he would merely roll over and bundle against the furs lining the ulaq.

Sisamat slept, and he dreamed of greenlight.

Before him were giants in a circle, and he was in the center. They were wolves but they were gossamer too; shifting spectres, and beyond them were the stars of the sky.
They appeared to watch him and at the same time see through him, focused and dismissive; and one by one they spoke. In the dream he understood it all.

One spoke with a commanding feminine voice. They were rivaled by twin voices on either side.
He cannot do this.
But he has, do you see him? Look, the eyes.
He was buried beneath ice!
The songs were sung. How can this be?

Sisters, my Cerberus—our brother hides within this vessel, yes, but he has not taken root. He may still be pulled out like a weed and tossed aside.

Sisamat did not know who they spoke of. He watched them as brightly as he might watch his mother or father, and felt the same uncertainty as when he beheld Kukutux that first time.
The central figure of this trio focused their entirety upon him and smiled with green teeth. Little brother. What do you deserve?

As the boy was shunted from the dream, he woke to the gray haze of rain pattering at the mouth of the ulaq. He saw his father keeping watch, and his sisters bundled close.
