the girl had been stupid. qiao could marvel her bravery, but it would do nothing to spare her from the judgment of the priestess’s anger.
the haka would be stronger if she waited for the new moon. qiao eyed the waning crescent making its indelible mark across the sky.

she placed the girl’s tooth upon the stony plinth. in her belly, she felt the first stirring of the fermented owl pellet she’d eaten.
above her, the endless weave of stars sang their million-mile light-song. qiao’s voice rose to join their chant, mingling with the chorus of the overworld.
