The fire of her first heat sent her fleeing — not from Mercy in particular, but from the world. Rae knew but she hadn't, not really, not until it was upon her. Heat was a far different beast from any she had ever encountered.Bristling all over, she sought shelter. She hoped that Mercy would find her soon. Or at least, before anyone else found her.
Rae suddenly didn't trust herself at all.
