the ugly reflection of a man redolent with filth stared back at him, and the caribou hunter bared his yellowing fangs in the rictus of a grin.

they had spoken little as they moved. sulukinak hunted small things when their journey slowed or stopped for any amount of time.
over time sulukinak processed the scene that had been left behind: the trial, the anger of the women; dutch, his wife, perhaps by now his newborns; the words of aditya, speaking of family.
she saw the way cen's teeth caught the summerlight.
