the adults watched close, but he took advantage of any security breaches. he wanted to see the ocean again, and lafayette was determined to do so. once free, he dashed down to the beach, and found himself under a clear, moonlit sky, the might of the sea at his forepaws.
but instead of charging into the waves, he folded himself down into the foam, letting the barest current float past him as he stared into the abyss. the night was warm but calm, the air fresh and salt-tinged. it was a perfect evening—and yet, he found himself a beggar to the gods.

for he could not live fully while lucette's own existence hung in the balance.
