She had expected to be joyous. Brother had been returned to them! Although he was bruised and battered, he was safe at last; their little family had been reunited. Yet, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Like a debt had yet to be settled. Strangers that had arrived at the palace around the same time Nokht had been found had yet to leave, and there was a sense of tension and disquiet in the air.
Asenath's nightmares had also remained. She spoke little about them to her family, but her broken sleep showed in the slump of her tiny shoulders and glazed over stare. She tread the same path around the halls as she had done over and over during the search for Nokht, as if she were still looking for him, finding comfort in the aimless routine.
It was on this well-worn path that the afternoon found the girl as she took a moment to lean against the warm red wall. The desert was getting awfully cold at night.
