The snowdusted earth was left far behind by the seal hunter children; Puffin and @Chagak were strong swimmers, long accustomed to the battering whims of the sea. They'd been born to it, after all. The seal hunter girl laughed breathlessly and splashed her brother, her face sunny even under clouded skies.

But there was more in the water here than just wolves.

Puffin never saw what it was that struck her from below. She only felt its teeth, its grip, and shrieked in the seconds before she dipped below the waves. Her mouth filled with saltwater. There was no time for thought; no time for anything but the sudden desperation of a creature facing death. The girl thrashed, snapped teeth, threw limbs — but what use was it?

She never saw, either, her mother darting from the shore into the waters. Released for a moment from death's grasp, Puffin was looking for her brother. She couldn't see him. Blood in the water; the sun's reflection on the surface; a glint of grey just below.

She screamed again.

RE: [m] Bullet the words at the mockingbirds singing - Chagak - December 02, 2024

They had always played in these waters. Seal hunt was his favorite game. Puffin, his favorite playmate. He swam in the salt water, now, eyes wide open. His sister's form was a pale, murky silhouette in darker surroundings. The kick of her legs was something he was well adept at recognizing, now. Beneath the toss of the waves, a wide grin split the young seal hunter's jaws.

His legs pumped harder, combatting the current. An especially strong wave seemed to come from underneath him — unprepared, Chagak struggled for a moment to right himself.

The water swirled strangely. His ears rang.

The boy resurfaced with a gasp to find himself alone.
