Mercy has a price - Hakumele - December 02, 2024

The snow had begun to fall, and Hakumele was growing tired, hungry, dehydrated. He felt as though his search had taken him in circles, and a part of him blamed Hokulani. He knew the joy she would derive from seeing him in this state.

He pushed these thoughts aside. She could be cruel, yes, but it felt wrong to imagine her as sadistic, no matter how often she proved such a trait. It would kill her mother.

The wind howling in his ears, the man felt as though his head was spinning. Lowering himself to the ground on shaky legs he found himself on his side after barely a moment.  But he couldn't stop, not now. His mind demanded that he stand, and yet his body would not listen.

Eyes rolling up, he found that the world in front of him faded from his grasp.

RE: Mercy has a price - Sialuk - December 02, 2024

Sialuk often came to the glen to hunt or simply to explore, as was her nature. It was adjacent to the spear, which meant there was no need to notify anyone if she was going there for the afternoon, as she did today. What she found today, however, was anything but ordinary. Her nose alerted her to the presence of another, though it took her some time to track down the exact location. Snowfall made things more difficult, but eventually she found the fallen, still body of a large wolf. It was not a face she recognized, let alone a scent.

Brow furrowed, she nudged his shoulder gently with her nose, wondering if he was too far gone or if he would rouse from his sleep.

RE: Mercy has a price - Hakumele - December 02, 2024

He felt limp, weak. Hakumele had never been one to allow himself to rest, and now such behaviour was catching up. He was worn out and losing muscle from his lack of nutrition.

He should have stayed on the island, allowed Hokulani to make her mistakes. Her mother would have forgave him eventually, but if she did not return home would he have been able to forgive himself?

The sudden nudge brought him back to reality. Though dazed, his eyes lifted to meet the source; a stranger with a pale coat. The image was not yet clear, his mind not yet in a place where he could speak.

RE: Mercy has a price - Sialuk - December 02, 2024

His eyes fluttered open, and Sialuk took a step back, hoping he would be in a better mood that he looked. He didn't speak, and Sialuk frowned. Can you speak? Stand? she asked, raising her voice above the wind which had picked up in the last ten or fifteen minutes. The healer was not sure there was much she could do if he could not stand and walk, but she could at least be a kind soul to sit here with him and listen in his last moments if he could speak.

The light of the sun, what little filtered through the cloud cover, would not last forever. Sialuk did not think she could stay past nightfall if he could not move on his own. Perhaps, if there were others with her, they could encircle him and keep him warm, but he was a stranger to their village, and she would not ask it of them. She hoped that this stranger could gather his strength sooner rather than later.

RE: Mercy has a price - Hakumele - December 03, 2024

As she spoke he was quick to shake the haze from his mind and lift his head. I need a moment, is all. He let out a breath. A moment, yes - and then he would be alright.

A part of him was wary, for when he stood he knew his legs would shake and his stomach would growl. The stranger, willing to stop like this, seemed kind enough; but Hakumele was not one to appear weak.

Travel has a tendency to catch up to me quicker these days.

RE: Mercy has a price - Sialuk - December 03, 2024

He answered the first question with his voice, although Sialuk was still uncertain about the second. Only when he was up and standing (or verbally confirmed he could), would she feel ready to make a suggestion that they get a move on. He was the second rough-looking case in as many weeks that she had encountered near village Moonspear, and she wondered if this work would keep her mind off the other things that had plagued her thoughts lately. Perhaps they were sent here on purpose to remind her that there were other, more dire things in the world outside of her dystopian love life.

The way he added "these days," made the Ostrega wonder about his age. He did not seem so much older than her, but perhaps he had been through more difficult times than she had. Again, she thought this could be the spirits hoping to show her some perspective.

My village is not far from here. We have food, a healing place, she said, offering something she knew she could give, provided he could stand and support himself. You may lean on me if it will help to walk.

RE: Mercy has a price - Hakumele - December 04, 2024

Hakumele was not in any position to reject such an offer. If they will have me, Careful, shaky legs pushed him to a stand. He would not lean on her, rather fight through the pain. He refused to be so helpless. Is it far?

He was a bit wary, as this would likely put his journey back some time. But then again... if he could not walk, there was no journey at all.

RE: Mercy has a price - Sialuk - December 06, 2024

We will, Sialuk assured him with a gentle smile. She watched as he struggled to stand, and Sialuk stayed at the ready in case he needed her help. Like many stubborn men, he refused the assistance.

Just there, she said, her muzzle pointing to the spear's lower slopes.

I am called Sialuk Ostrega, and the village Moonspear. How should I call you? she asked. She waited a moment longer, then began to make slow, steady steps toward home. He would be the second patient to come to the healing ulaq. Zyraena had been there not so long, though there had been no sign of the woman's sister in Sialuk's travels east.

RE: Mercy has a price - Hakumele - December 07, 2024

Hakumele Halu. He responded, finding his stance after a moment so he could begin to follow. The sight of the slopes alone made his legs ache, but at the very least they were lower. I've come from Witch Island in search of my daughter. Hokulani.

In a way, he hoped that they had not seen his daughter. If these people treated injured travelers often, it would kill him to think that may be how they met. But more than anything, if Hokulani was here he could not allow her to see him hurt. Not out of his stubborn nature, but because whether she was his daughter or not she was still herself. Hakumele knew better than anyone else that the girl was sick in the head.

RE: Mercy has a price - Sialuk - December 07, 2024

Sialuk noted the name and his island, though neither were familiar to her. It seemed winter brought with it many wolves who sought their lost kin, and she shook her head in silent lack of recognition of the name. Perhaps there was something on the wind that had driven these family members apart. She thought of her own kin, how they had gone away. At least she had confidence that they were safe and sound out there.

She was quiet as she led him to the healing ulaq, snagging a rabbit from one of the caches along the way. When they arrived, she was careful not to disturb @Zyraena. Like she had done with her other patient, Sialuk skinned the rabbit, then used her teeth to place the herbs within the meat to hide their taste. Eat, she instructed. The other woman here is Zyraena. She is recovering from the harshness of winter, like you. Sleep, and I will return to check on you often, make sure you are fed. The herbs will help you to relax. There was hunting to be done now, to refill what she had taken, and Sialuk could tell that she too was hungry for another meal.

RE: Mercy has a price - Hakumele - December 08, 2024

He took what he was offered without complaint, offering her his thanks before she took her leave.

Now it was time for him to rest. He had plenty of sleep to catch up on, whether he liked it or not. He hoped to soon be able to return home, or at the very least send Hokulani on her way there.

Soon she would be of age, no longer his responsibility. Once that day hit he would finally be free to live where he pleased without the pressure of keeping her in line.
