sivisutaaġniq — the long dark - Raiyuk - December 08, 2024

Set for Dec 14/15.

Don't feel the need to match, I'm just in my feelings right now. Open to family & leadership. Tagging others here in case you want to drop a character in: @Sea Hunter @Kilalurak @Sirmiq @Chagak @Taggak (*I think by now Sirmiq has departed but for visibility sake he's included!).

Raiyuk could barely look upon his father's lodge now. He stood now outside of it, keeping it company as if it might awaken and begin to speak. He had nothing left.

He felt as empty as this sleeping-place, and wished he could go back somehow; if he had been here instead of traveling for those many days, would it have made a difference? What had he missed while he ran upon the sea ice, and learned of places that were not home? He thought of Aditya and the conversation they had shared—with a new guilt now, one that turned his stomach; because he had chosen to avoid his father in order to act the part of a trader, when he should have been doing anything else.

The lodge had once been a place of warmth and connection but now it stood empty, without the laughter of Chakliux or the chiding voice of Marina over their many children. Raiyuk thought of Tullik and how they had celebrated his first successful seal hunt.

Who remained? He ducked as he entered the lodge. He saw in the center, where space was shared among many, the pelts that his mothers had made. He saw discarded toys which were once favored by himself or Taggak, and had by now passed down to his siblings. 'I must tidy them, that would be a help to Marina.' He caught himself thinking. The warmth of his gaze turned serious and, rather than do what came to mind, Raiyuk turned away.

He went to the sleeping-place that had once been shared between himself and Taggak; now it smelled of others. He turned from this too, and went to the other side of the lodge where he knew Chakliux and his wives had kept their own space — and it is here he stops, just before passing that invisible threshold, and he does not move further.

Raiyuk leaves the lodge without touching anything. He does not take any momentos, he does not tidy those toys scattered in the shared space, he leaves the pelts arranged however they had been tossed. Moving quickly to the front of the lodge and out, he stands before his father's remaining legacy and swallows a draught of winter.

His chin lifts, and he cries out with a call to @Rodyn, and to anyone of the family still remaining; he needs them here, to take this step forward with him.

RE: sivisutaaġniq — the long dark - Rodyn - December 08, 2024

Rodyn had been able to come to semi terms with all the goings on. He was still here. Stalwart and able in his care of moontode. Though he had thought of leaving. Too many ghosts now took over these shores. And he could not leave while they may return. It was a heavy truth.

He had left lodges untouched knowing himself how he had left Samanis sleeping pace for days, weeks. He had only recently begun to clean it out. When he thought perhaps. But that. He took a breath a problem for a different day really.

Raiyuk called
Young seal hunter. Young man. And yet too young to muclst deal with the likes of this. He heeded the call and chuffed quietly. And then he would wait.

As Rodyn approached the lodge of Raiyuk's father, the young man regarded him with as much stoicism as he could muster—which was not a lot. Emotion wore raw across his features. He had cried and cursed along the sea's edge a day previous, now Raiyuk thought himself to be as empty as the lodge, but he looked almost ill with feeling.

He gave the chieftain a small nod of his head, trying to be respectful, and found himself in that one motion reaching to Rodyn's shoulder and placing his forehead there, perhaps inappropriately, and as if to seek an embrace.

After a moment like this he stood properly again.

With my father—gone, he would not say dead I am the man of our lodge now. I... I seek to take over whatever expectations come along with that. I had previously been helping to scout for a new village and I want to tell you, I will continue with that. His throat felt as if it were closing when really Raiyuk was gripped by his sadness, but only a moment. And once the village is built—and Moontide is at home there—I will be returning here to maintain what is left.

That was what he pledged to do, and what he wanted to do. His father's lodge would not go to ruin; Raiyuk would do what was necessary so that his brothers could keep the home they knew, and uphold their father's memory.

RE: sivisutaaġniq — the long dark - Rodyn - December 10, 2024

Unfathomable pain. Rodyn hurt for the youth he had seen grow. There were so many losses more and more each day. And he was helpless to fix it. Raiyuk and him had such long roads to travel.

Rodyn shifted and leaned his head against the youths own. Giving comfort where it was sought. He had no qualms about this. He'd even pull him into an embrace if the young man needed or wanted it. He knew how heavy his own grief had felt.

Rodyn shook his head a sadness in his face. We no longer have enough to build away from here and I find. I am loathe to leave. I would rather tend hearthstone where those that are lost could find us. This is a mission you can consider nulled.

Rodyn sighed softly. Do you wish to be lead warrior or beta like Chakliux? But I must warn you Raiyuk. I do not know how long moontide will stand anymore. We lose our wolves in droves lately it seems. A painful truth, but a truth none the less.

They would stay? Is that the trade that his father had made—himself, his wife—and in exchange Moontide could stand? He should have been thankful for the reprieve; to be here tending to the lodge and whoever remained of his siblings, rather than being sent far afield. He should have been happy they could all stay together. Intellectually he knew what feelings he should have about this news and the losses and the pivot of his life, and yet the longer Raiyuk tried to grasp at understanding the emptier he felt.

It was difficult to focus on the words coming from the chieftain. Do you wish—...warrior or beta—Chakliux, The name of his father was like a spear through his heart. We lose our wolves in droves...

I will be what you need. That had been his pledge. I am no warrior like—like he was, remembering how proudly his father carried his scars, how involved he became in his stories; how difficult it had been to go against the man Cen when the time came. Raiyuk felt his tired eyes prickle again with emotion.

Doubt festered in the wound left by his loss. Raiyuk could not pretend he was stoic in the face of it. He could not stand proudly before his father's lodge because he felt no pride in himself now, only a bitterness that he might fail in the protection of his family—brothers, sisters, Moontide; however far it extended.

He looked now upon Rodyn like a lost child, begging without words, 'What do I do? Tell me what to do.'

RE: sivisutaaġniq — the long dark - Rodyn - December 10, 2024

Rodyn did not understand the way things seemed to fall himself. He had no wisdom. No words to erase all doubt. He too was into unknown territory. And it was both frightening and infuriating.

Rodyn smiled softly. Well, how about we make no decisions now. We are both filled to the brim with grief. It makes all decisions harder. And sometimes we simply need to exist in our grief before we can move forward. Trust me I know this.

Rodyn looked out over moontide. This is both an order from your alpha, but also a request from a friend. Take it easy. Don't push yourself. And don't force yourself not to feel. Grief is a fickle master and it affects everyone differently. Take a week for yourself, your siblings. Tell stories, happy memories live everyday for those we've lost. And then when you are ready start small, a hunt, a border patrol. And I am available anytime you need.

A week felt too short, and too long, at the same time. If he could get through this night with the boys, maybe he could get through more—for now that was what Raiyuk would focus on.

Thank you. He answered, his voice dull. He shut his eyes and took a deep breath, and when he opened them again he looked to the lodge, and seemed a bit more despondent. I don't know all the ways of the seal hunters after all.

He remembered when death songs were sung for a woman in Moonsong; he wondered now if that was something a wife should do, or if it was right at all for a seal hunter's wake. Those were the ways of the sunshine people—but what about his own? But he wouldn't have to do anything so long as his father lived — and Raiyuk chose to believe that was the case. That he had gone. It was easier.

Sir, he looked back to the chieftain now, his expression tired. If news of this is to spread, I would like to be the one to tell it. Could you—could you watch the lodge and my brothers? I would go to Moonglow and speak there first. And immediately as he said this, tears sprung again to his eyes.

RE: sivisutaaġniq — the long dark - Rodyn - December 10, 2024

Rodyn knew well grief. It had been his bedfellow for months, almost a year. And it still hurt in the worst and best of times. But the key was one pawstep at a time.

You're welcome. I'm sorry Raiyuk I wish I could change it all for you. And he did. He wished the youth didn't need to deal with all if this. But all he could do was be here.

You needn't call me Sir. Rodyn is fine. I will keep an eye on them. Do not worry.

He himself had taken solace in moonglow in his darkest hours.

RE: sivisutaaġniq — the long dark - Raiyuk - December 10, 2024

With a duty to perform Raiyuk felt he could get through the next few hours at the very least, and he could trust that Rodyn would look after the boys. 'Better to have a real adult handle them.' His mind barked at him.

Although he could not will himself to smile, he did try to give Rodyn a brush of shoulder-to-shoulder as he departed. He would never forget the kindness of this man in the wake of disaster. He set his focus on Moonsong for now, and without further comment Raiyuk was on his way.
