dragon house - Athens - December 08, 2024

He took her here and could not say why.

It seemed secluded, sheltered. Yet he had not missed the charred trees here and there. It poked at something within him. Even if they were old, signs of fire provoked something...primal.

So he kept @Marina close — as if worried he might need to carry her away from sudden flames.

The place was thankfully more growth than it was char. Beautiful, too. He gestured now to a spot between two trees. A sheltered place.

Rest, he instructed.

Kindness would be shown in his willingness to help her settle down.

RE: dragon house - Marina - December 08, 2024

They scarcely spoke, the pair of them. Marina was left to her silent remembering — in dreams or waking moments, it made no difference. After a time she'd recalled her name, which she'd spoken to him one evening over the meal he'd brought for them. Marina Sea-Snake.

It was odd to recall; she often had the sense that she'd left that name behind some time ago. Now it was all she had. That and the occasional aching glimpses of loves lost. Children, so many of them. A frost-furred man. A woman with sparkling purple eyes.

These things, she'd decided, were best left in the past. Marina had no hope to reclaim any of it. Instead she looked to the present: this strange man; her fractured reality; the long road ahead. These things were tangible to her now, though she didn't know where the man would lead her.

She wasn't quite sure he knew, either. Nonetheless she obliged him, as she often did, dark ocean eyes following him faithfully.

Is this it, then? Not the first time she'd asked, nor the last.

Yes.

For now, maybe forever.

Who ever really knows how long forever is, anyway? A grim contemplation that forced him to turn his gaze away from her.

Are you hungry? He asked this to know her status. If she was hungry, then surely that was good. If not, perhaps she would need someone more medically knowledgeable.

Another lie. Her suspicion lingered in her eyes, but Marina chose to maintain her silence. How far would his lies take them? How long before he realized there would be no end to this path?

No.

She studied him.

Were you born in these mountains? Or elsewhere?

RE: dragon house - Athens - December 09, 2024

No.

He figured she must be terribly ill. Maybe not his problem for very long — unless he willed it. It left a bitter taste in his mouth like stomach acid.

Elsewhere.

And it didn't matter now. It would never matter again, he thought.

It'll get cold here, but it'll be sheltered. You won't be bothered.

You won't be found — did someone look for her now?
