I steal a few breaths - Milan - December 24, 2024

Milan had always found the world blanketed in so rather intriguing. It was a strange sight each time she saw it, yet comforting as well. It was far easier to see other's approaching in this weather; she thought so at least.

With this newfound security she had wandered from the valley, paws light on the ground as she explored the glade. Trees had shed their leaves long ago, and now the scent of snowfall surrounded her in their place. She breathed in the could air, pausing to admire her surroundings. It was a shame to be viewing such a sight on her own.

She wondered what Frederick may be doing, how he may be feeling after their last meeting, but she did not feel guilty. She had put her foot down, and she was proud of herself. He was a good man, he would not hold a grudge should he have been upset.

Sighing, she shook him from her mind.

Cole’s figure appeared from the edge of the glade, his steady gait crunching through the snow. The blanket of white softened the landscape, but his dark coat cut through the muted backdrop like a shadow against the frost. He spotted her, her pale form standing still amidst the wintery expanse, her gaze distant, as if lost in thought.

He chuffed lowly to announce himself, his breath misting in the cold air. As he approached, his golden eyes flicked briefly over her, catching the way the snow framed her.

Milan, he greeted, his deep voice warm against the chill. He stopped a respectful distance away, his tail giving a faint sway.

How you doin'? he asked, tilting his head slightly, curiosity softening the sharpness of his features.

As a familiar voice reached her ears, she turned to Cole with a smile. Cole. She spoke in response, her tail waving low. I'm well - how could I not be on such a day?

Glad to see her packmate, she bounced through the deep snow to meet him halfway. Both wolves had recieved their promotions some time ago, and she hadn't gotten to see him much since. How has your role as guard been treating you? She asked, smiling up at him.

He looked to be in good health, and she was glad for it. His role was far more physically demanding than her own.

Cole nodded in acknowledgment, a faint smile touching his features as Milan approached. Good, he replied simply. Keeps me busy, movin' around, not stuck in one place. Suits me fine.

His golden gaze lingered on her, assessing her for a moment before tilting his head slightly. And you? Heard you’ve got yourself a new rank. How’s it treatin’ you?

He shifted his weight slightly, his stance relaxed but alert as the snow crunched beneath his paws. It wasn’t often he had the chance to catch up with packmates, and he found himself genuinely curious about how she was adjusting. Seems like you're settlin' into it alright, he added, a faint note of approval in his tone.

She gave a nod. She certainly had grown into her role as Visor. I think so.. it's just good to know my place, you know? A certainty that she belonged in BearClaw. The job was far less physical too, something she had hoped for.

I've heard that you brought in a few new members lately. It was impressive, really. He was a much better recruiter than Milan. Are they settling well?

She noted that she should speak to those she was yet to meet sooner than later - it was a part of her job.

Cole chuckled softly, shaking his head as a grin pulled at his lips. Seems I’ve got a knack for picking up strays, huh? he said, his voice carrying a warm humor that lightened his words. He glanced off into the distance for a moment, as if considering her question more seriously.

They’re well... I think, he added after a pause, his tone thoughtful. Takes time, you know. Some fit right in, others... take a bit of work. But that’s part of it, right? Finding their place.

He turned his gaze back to Milan, his green eyes alight with a quiet confidence. You’ll get along fine with them, I reckon. You’ve got that... welcoming way about you. Makes it easy for folks to feel at home. A rare compliment from him, but an honest one.

Her tail waved high at his words, filled with pride. You're too kind Cole - you'll give me a complex! She spoke, her words laced with a light giggle. A part of her wondered if she would feel differently about the Bearclaw man had Frederick not come into her life.

She was quick to push the thought away.

I've been putting those pelts you asked me for to good use. She moved to a new point of conversation, tail waving lightly. Have I gotten to your den yet? If she hadn't, then the visor would be sure to make a point of it. He had been rather helpful, after all.

Cole offered her nothing more than a nonchalant shrug. He didn't see himself as such a...good man, but now he was changing that. He was carving a new path for himself, not one stricken with blood.

He raised a brow, indignant about the pelts. We should make another, if 'ya got time for it. An idea, a good one he thought. He should keep this attitude up.

Nah, y'haven't. Don't stress abou' it, I don't sleep much there anyways. He had been taken out mainly sleeping on the borders, marking trees and whatnot, to keep out those who didn't find the valley's hospitality up to par. He'd make sure the women like Milan, Nephele, didn't see it.

Milan nodded, quick to accept his offer. She was happy to accept any help offered to her. Of course, anytime. She smiled, tail waving low.

Now her ears perked, clear with concern. Well I'll have to get on that then! Whether he spent much time in his den or not, she thought it necessary to keep it warm when he did. I'll see you soon, alright? Taking a moment to touch her nose to his - with the extra effort to reach it - she then turned, rushing off towards Bearclaw territory.

Cole watched her go, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. He gave a low hum, shaking his head as her form disappeared into the distance. Turning back toward the valley, he rolled his shoulders to shake off the lingering chill.

She sure would, he thought, heading back to his patrol.
