all welcome

Grief and rage, it seemed, were powerful enough motivators that it was within days of discovering Valravn’s death that Chacal felt herself succumbing to the instinct that would potentially lead her to become a mother for the fourth time. She felt furious with her body for demanding such a thing, at such a difficult time- yet she knew that motherhood would be a blessing, and might provoke change that could bring peace in this time of darkness.

She would do as Mireille did; seek out a number of suitors, and spend no longer with them than was necessary. She had thrice worn her heart on her sleeve, and each time she had learned a lesson that had never before been truly comprehended.

This year would be different.

This year she would not take their name, would not seek them out again, and would chase after them with snapping teeth should they seek to find a place in her home.

Strangers, only strangers.

For at the end of the day, it was what all fathers became.

She called for strangers, then, who would satisfy her need and please themselves to have found so willing a partner.

Traditionally he did not answer such calls. Atlas had won his wife long ago, his woman of royal blood and bearing — and while some men allowed their desires to wander, he had always been faithful to her. A common whore who sang out for the touch of any man in her season could hardly compare.

Morticia was getting old, though. They both were, but age hindered women in a deeper way than men. Who could say how many more children she might give him?

So Atlas allowed his curiosity to guide him. The woman was all gilded obsidian, he soon saw, and proud in her bearing. He knew that her children would be beautiful. So he stepped closer, ears folding back to show that he meant no harm, and watched to see whether she would be receptive to his advances.

The man who arrived at the sound of her call had every right to do so, by the look of him. Not some two year old, looking to discover new sensations or some fleabitten scoundrel just hoping to get lucky. She had a knack for finding good-looking men.

But her children, she felt certain, would obtain all necessary beauty from her.

Naturally, it might be unusual for those searching for monogamy to be invited into such a temporary bliss; but her call had not been for a husband. She assumed he knew this, and drew closer to him so that she might assess his health, and ignite his interest.
