the morning light crept gently through the cracks in the den, illuminating k'edghildza's resting place. her eyes fluttered open, the weight of sleep lingering for just a moment before a sharp, undeniable heat settled in her core. she froze, her breath catching as the realization swept over her.

her season! it had come early.

her brow furrowed, thoughts racing as her body betrayed her, aching with a warmth that could not be ignored. surely, it was the haste of their union, the closeness she had shared with her husband, that had brought this upon her. she shifted uncomfortably, her paws pressing into the cool earth beneath her in an attempt to ground herself.

but @Sun Eater was not there. his warmth, his steady presence—absent. she swallowed hard, unwilling to rise and risk the chaos her scent might bring to the borders. she would not cause a stir; she would not make this anyone’s burden but his.

her head tilted back, her voice low and soft, a call meant for him and him alone. it carried through the morning air like a whisper of fire, insistent and filled with the weight of her need. a sound only a wife would dare summon, a tone that could not be mistaken.

and then she waited, her breath shallow, her heart hammering in her chest. she would not leave this place until he came to her.

forever chasing the caribou had cut sun eater into a lean figure, one often streamlined in darkness against the snow as he flashed across the drifts. today was no different, frigid hours whiled away by splitting one great herd into three.

in this manner would their weakened be exposed to the saatsine and the cycle continued. sun eater might have gone on and on with it had not his mate's voice floated up over the cold earth, a summons.

for a moment he was still and wondering, heart on gallop in his chest from where he had only just slowed. that race for caribou had ended; now the chieftain wheeled in high snow and used his great stamina on a knifing beeline for where the starwoven waited.

that stunning bouquet of scent tendriled to the man before he had even come along the stream, and with lips curledz he stalked dominantly into tree shadows.

his growl a masculine response to her need, his single eye burned upon his wife and he pushed his muzzle into her guard hairs, teeth pulling in possessive rake.

as swiftly as her voice left her throat, the thunder of his steps came. she could feel it in the earth— the caribou running, her powerful husband rooted in his desire for the hunt, but he paused. he paused when his wife needed him. oh! this had k'edghildza's tail wagging against her starhewn flank.

and then he was here. he was here! k'edghildza turned the moment he erupted through the trees with a growl, entering her den as if it had been his own! she bathed him in kisses beneath his jaw, clinging to the dewdrops of drool that pooled.

ałts'ede. she'd mewl against his hefty grip. beneath the blanket of her want, she'd find herself worrying about the state of the other hunters! has it come too soon? was she burdening him? would this interfere with the lanzadoii cub life cycle? oh, the worries she had!

but she couldn't deny the electrifying shock of his teeth against skin. how she loathed the gentle-nature of man, but her husband seemed keen of forgoing any tendrils thereof.

k'edghildza; his k'edghildza. she had come into her own and sun eater was stirred into a frenzy that almost had him embracing her hips here with his powerful arms. "it comes when it wishes," he rumbled against the curve of her throat, pressing close, close, suffused with hunger and made wild by thirst.

"we will go to the river now. go back," sun eater decided. it would not preclude their roaming, but perhaps k'edghildza's cycle-arrival might inspire others.

"i long to build a snow-shelter for you when the time has come," he murmured in a rare articulation of sentiment, single eye dancing.

her breath hitched, her heart a wild drum against the cage of her ribs. his touch, his voice, the strength of him against her—it was all too much, too overwhelming, and her body burned with the heat of her season.

we must go now, she demanded, her voice a sharp rasp, trembling with need. her tail lashed behind her, a whip of impatience, her eyes wild with an almost feral hunger.

she turned to face him fully, pressing her weight into his, her voice lowering to a hiss. or i take you here, my love. right here.

her teeth flashed briefly as she nipped at his shoulder, her stance unyielding. there was no room for his sentiment, no time for his careful plans. she was his wife, his k'edghildza, and she demanded him now.

almost he answered; almost he did not rein himself any longer and allowed the possession to seize him. "i will call. you will stay with me."

let her be teased a while longer;

let him!

they would twine in the land he had shed blood to capture; the strength of the river would inhabit them both, and sun eater directed the starwoven along the stream.

he would gather some hides; he would call to the others; they would go ahead.

yes, husband, she murmured, her voice low but filled with a warmth that simmered beneath her words. she leaned into him briefly, letting her shoulder brush against his in silent affirmation, before quickening her pace to match his lead.

she did not speak further, content to let the silence between them thrum with unspoken anticipation as they made their way along the stream. the land seemed to echo their intentions, the river's murmurs a song of strength and unity.

as they moved, she allowed herself a fleeting smile. this was their moment, their claim, their bond made tangible in the land they tread. the time would come soon, and she would not falter.
