i can't fight this time now - Nephele - January 18, 2025

that morning the stormcloud awoke with a fluttering in her chest, a giddiness in her steps. nerves coursed through her veins, anxiety, vulnerability, excitement, anticipation —

her steps cut through the valley with a swift purpose, her nose low as she took to a recently marked footpath.

she had thought this over, uncovered her heart, lay bare her feelings and knew she would find only relief in the acceptance of it all. but there was fear too, of rejection, of tearing the stitches of old wounds open once more.

but she wanted this. yes, she wanted this, whatever the outcome may be. and so she chased after it with a racing heart, one step at a time leading her toward the distant figure of @Cole.

He hadn't been far when she tracked him down. Nose to the ground, determined. He hadn't seen that look in her eyes since she met him, desperately looking for her son. He often thought of the young boy and it brought a darkening pulse to his paws— what had become of their father, how he'd fail them.
Cole had been resting— shock— but was brought to his feet from the enclave of fallen oaks and shaded branches he'd rested betwixt. The guard didn't have a den of his own— didn't need it. He was on his feet too much to have a place to call home.
She greeted him with a look of anxiety, filtering his own worry. What happened? he wanted to ask, but it came out as: What's wrong, darlin'?
Seeking to cup her face with gentle paws to heed her fast paced moves. She was a glittering balm of frenzied looks, one that he'd like to coax out of her. Someone hurt you?

she'd thought it over and over in her head of what she would say to him, of how she would say it.

and yet as he held her there, face cupped in his warm grasp, she had forgotten all that she had wanted to say. instead she could only stare, longingly, adoringly, mouth gone dry with the pounding of her heart.

"this better be worth the risk."

and then she was on her tiptoes leaning in to the warmth he offered, to breathe in his scent, to steal a kiss.

He'd first tilt her head side to side, checking to see if she'd been bleeding, but there had been no wounds upon her. With her ogling stare, panting breaths, he only waited for words to slip past her lips.
And when they did, Lord, were they oh, so, sweet. A molten heat that he couldn't kindle, a lurch from her that brought tiptoes to meet his height. Instinctively, he wouldn't deny her this— he couldn't— a man who knew what a woman wanted.
With his grasp he gripped her chin, the kiss warm, gentle, no matter how much his nature begged otherwise. She was fragile against him, a porcelain doll waiting to fall off the shelf at his forsaken grip.
But before it could get to where she melted against him, he pulled away, the residual grumble of his own displeasure of separating from her gyrating his throat. Fuck, he cussed beneath the air of his breath, resisting the temptation to pull her atop of him. You're young, Nephie, but that hadn't stopped him from wrapping a paw around her back.
I don't... shit. I don't wanna fuckin' hurt 'ya.

for a moment everything was still, silent. there was only him and her and their beating hearts, their touch upon one another driving her to hold their shared embrace for as long as she could.

but then —

he pulled away and she snapped her head downward, warmth to her cheeks as ears slicked back in fear she had done something wrong. the curse struck her like a harsh whip across the face and so she was left there motionless, thoughtless.

had she made a mistake?

more words came as he snaked an arm around her back. "hurt comes with the risk cole, one i'm willing to take."

she looked upon him with soft eyes, yet there was no pleading to be found in them. she would not beg it of him, would not force him.

all she could do was ask, and so she did.

"a risk we could take together, if you'd have me?"

The stillness was something he could feel, too. He could feel everything against her like this— her heatbeat, her trembling, the blood in her veins, roaring for him. It'd make any man prideful, driven to downright insanity.
When she looked ashamed that she had reached for him, he stopped her. No, lil girl, you ain't done nothin' wrong. Wipe it from her face, the expression of embarrassment. He grimaced, jaw tightening, when she was insistent upon him.
She didn't beg it of him, but there was a wish she had.
Slow. He said, realizing there'd be a lack of context. But he was so focused on tending to her, consoling that wicked feeling of not being wanted from her. His head dipped, inhaling the deepest parts of her scent from around her neck, nosing through the guard hairs, maw dribbling saliva onto her naked skin. We'll take it nice and slow, 'ya hear me?
Cole wasn't even heeding his own words. If 'ya... he inhaled her again, so sweet, tender. 'Ya find a man you're own age, I want you to take him seriously.
Or maybe he'd fucking kill him. But the sentiment needed to be heard. After his conversation with Tvar, he needed to do right. But God, was she soft, plush beneath his paws. You understand?

there is relief and confusion cast upon her with his words. at one moment he is erasing any doubts she had, speaking soft words with an electrifying touch that sends shivers down her back.

slow. she nods her head in agreement, leaning in to the embrace he so readily offered. a chance for them both, that's all she sought.

but in the next breath he is speaking nonsense, words of doubt and unease. he had asked her to find him! he had asked her and here she was, yet now it seemed there were threads of regret and she did not know why.

"no, i don't understand," the words were spoken true and with solidity. she pulled away, just enough to read his expression and that he might see the resolve in hers. "i did not open my heart for another man, i opened it for you!"

"if you do not have confidence this will work, tell me now," and in this her eyes were pleading, but only for the truth. "if you do not want this, tell me now." because why else would he suggest such a thing as another man for her?!

RE: i can't fight this time now - Cole - January 18, 2025

She pulled away from him. He didn't like it. Had he not spoken to her rationally? Had he not given her the proper answers? He was doing it by the book: by the code of honor. If he did not claim to be honorable, lest him try to fulfill it now.
Don't, he started, tone firm, relentless, as he commanded her to settle. He caught himself speaking too hefty, reeling it in through the ironclad of his chest. Slow it down, Nephie... there was too much space between them. Too much. It could suffocate a swallow, birds falling from the skies— he reached for her again.
Look at me, and if she did not, he'd pull her face toward him.
I ain't— voice softening, I ain't mean it like that. And he didn't. He didn't mean to upset her, cause her to thrash and writhe. He meant that if she saw a better opportunity than him, younger, fitter than she should take it!
Voice dropping to a clerical of want, he stood, brushing back the furs from her face, her neck. He cupped her tight, gripping her jaw. 'Course I want you.
But would he even be enough? Y'just... got so much more life ahead of you. I’ve seen things, done things—things you don’t deserve to be burdened with.
He didn't wanna hold her back. Not from life. But he was selfish. A selfish, selfish man. But I ain't goin' no where. Y'hear me?

she steeled her heart, ready for the burn of words she did not wish to hear. but they did not come, his hold on her calming the thrumming in her chest.

she did not fight against the pull, eyes softening as he asked her to look — and look she did, hopeful, expectantly, but with twinges of fearful anticipation for what would be spoken.

she sucked in a breath, holding it until those sweet words pushed the air from her lungs.

she did not fight his words of life and burdens, instead aiming to push her head into the middle of his chest and bury it there for as long as he would let her. "you—"

a beat, muffled words spoken into ruffled fur. "you owe me a date."

RE: i can't fight this time now - Cole - January 18, 2025

Of course he let her. Thrust upon his cavity where his heart lay, she buried herself against him. As close as she could, she burrowed. Like a vole. Could she feel his beating heart, calmed and strengthened by her hold? He could feel hers, wrapped against him like this.
She stuttered with her choice of words. Sputtering like a child, misstep one after the other. But he was patient. A patience reserved for her. To wield and mend, he brought his head lower.
Alrigh’, baby, we can do that. He spoke softly, words trepid and barely audible over his ruffian of a tongue. Where d’ya want me to take ‘ya?
A paw drew soft circles over her lower back, her spine. She wondered how her husband, ex, treated her in moments like these. Was he callous? Was he gentle? How could Cole compare? But the thoughts dwindled as he remembered she carried no love for him.
Anywhere. He cooed. She had been rigid, tapered with maturity since she came here. She had to be for her girls. But with him— there was no need. He’d coax the girl out, the real Nephele if it was the last thing he’d do.
