lorewatch - Lestan - February 03, 2025

i know we have one and yet

time, too much time had passed. lestan in restless love went out in search of wintersman as thick clouds rolled over the creek and poured down upon the valley great gobbets of wet snow.
it was a dismal day, dismal as his heart and its coalbed creaking. "@Wake!" he cried out, uncaring who might hear his desperation.
ears quivered, lifting to hear an answer, and he shouted again, turning beneath the waves of scudding wind which sought to blind him and tear the name from his mouth.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 10, 2025

Her ears twitched at the sound of a name carried on the wind, sharp, desperate. It wasn’t far from where she had settled, just for now.

Wake.

So familiar. The name struck like a stone to her chest, sending panic clawing up her throat. There was desperation in that unseen voice, enough to make her heart hammer against her ribs. Had her dearest companion met some cruel fate? Had he abandoned her to face this world’s trials alone once more?

No. She refused to believe it. Wake was too clever, too capable to be felled so easily.

But doubt gnawed at the edges of her resolve. A hollow ache bloomed in her chest, the weight of uncertainty near unbearable. It was as if an unseen rope had tightened around her heart, yanking her to her feet, pulling her toward the source of that call.

She had to know.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 11, 2025

was it something he had done? or perhaps said! had he missed a visit, had he denied wake; he had done something to fall from grace? but what! "come back!" he begged into the eye of the storm.
snow billowed, but not snow at all. a figure which startled his peripherals until the mayfair turned. a grey dove of a woman, her expression something like his own.
"are you al-all right?" called lestan, recovering both his sense and his practical manners.
but where was wake?

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 11, 2025

The sight at the source of the voice left her both confused and saddened, a wolf of warm colors crying into the wind. But Wake was nowhere to be seen.

Where was Wake?

Kirain, caught off guard by the sudden question, quickly softened her tone, offering warmth and reassurance. I'm fine! Are you alright? What's going on? Did something happen? She padded closer, hoping to ease the burden of the storm, yet careful to maintain enough distance to avoid startling him further.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 12, 2025

"oh, i'm j-just —" how to explain crying out into the wind, shouting for a man he did not think would return? "i w-was looking for s-someone," lestan mumbled, ears flattening.
he took her in again, wondering why she seemed so — no. it was a projection. "i am s-sorry to have disturbed y-you, m-miss," the mayfair managed again, weakly backing a step as if to signal that she was free not to bother with the likes of him any longer.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 12, 2025

Winter’s Wake, by chance? Her eyes shone with hope as she searched his face. Have you seen him? Spoken to him? He left a few days ago to tend to some business. Asked me to survey the valley, get a feel for the place. He wants to lay claim here, build a home. I’m helping… I think.

Kirain’s voice faltered at the end, a bit sheepish. Truthfully, Wake was the mastermind behind their journey, the one with the vision. She was just his companion, following where he led, doing what she could.

A wave of shame crept in.

So helpful that I don’t even know where my friend is, she thought bitterly.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 16, 2025

she knew him! she knew him, and lestan's expression was suffused with relief and anguish. "no! i haven't s-seen him in quite some t-time. i knew he was l-looking to settle, b-but —"
but where had he gone?
storm keened. "w-we should find shelter," came the tracker's dejected suggestion. "maybe you c-could tell me what sort of b-business he was on?" hopeful, desperate prying.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 16, 2025

As the storm raged on, Kirain nodded in agreement, wind whipping at her fur. She was no stranger to weather like this, but even she knew when to seek shelter.

I can't say I'm familiar with the land yet. Could you lead? Her voice was steady, but a flicker of shame twisted in her chest. Wake had sent her to learn the terrain, yet here she was, lost.

She cast her gaze around, searching for something, anything, that felt familiar. But the landscape blurred beneath the storm’s fury, leaving only uncertainty in its wake.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 16, 2025

"yes, of course," lestan mumbled without thinking. astute sense had traveled all the rising sun, and with no hesitation he led them to where he knew a mingled forest of spruce and aspen to be. there would be some protection from the snow there, and a ground heaped high with deadfall and studded with boulders might offer even more.
when they arrived, the tracker shook white gathering from his coat and gave a subdued wag of his tail. "i'm lestan mayfair, of swiftcurrent creek. i m-met winter's wake l-last autumn."
he breathed on his paws for warmth.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 16, 2025

Shaking the storm’s icy grip from her coat, Kirain turned to him with a warm smile.

It’s lovely to meet you, Lestan. I haven’t had dealings with your pack yet, though Wake tells me you’re… more enjoyable to interact with. A flicker of sadness passed through her eyes before she blinked it away.

I’m Kirain. Her tone lightened as she continued, That’s about the time I met my dearest companion as well. He’s a busy man. She sighed softly, a touch of fond exasperation in her voice.

So busy, in fact, I’m not entirely sure where he is. I believe he went to commune with other packs, hoping to ease our transition here. He’s very passionate about it.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 17, 2025

"a pleasure," lestan said of kirain and her introduction, "though i do w-wish we could have m-met under different circumstances." she volunteered what he wished with an open demeanour. "swiftcurrent can be rather friendly. or cold, depending on wh-who answers."
wake. gone on visiting business. lestan peered dismally at the storm. "while i d-do not doubt the tr-traveling abilities of our mutual companion, suffice it to say, i am indeed worried."
in quiet they moved for a moment, until lestan began to smooth snow from a hollow in the ground, discovering wet leaves and then dry beneath it. a burrow.
his stomach cramped with hunger. "he is indeed p-passionate," lestan murmured, face growing warm as he tried to wonder what sort of relationship kirain shared with wake. was it — the same?

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 17, 2025

As she observed her newfound companion, she couldn't help but take in his bleak expression. A knot of worry tightened in her chest. Was he alright? Why was he so concerned for Wake?

Wake is a capable wolf, she said, her voice steady despite the unease creeping in. Despite his softness, I don’t doubt he’s holding his own. He’s clever, always thinking ahead. I admire him for it. Honestly, I’d be lost without him.

Her gaze drifted toward the storm, and a dull ache settled in her heart. She believed every word she had spoken, yet the worry gnawed at her all the same. What if a pack meeting had gone awry?

Kirain shook off the thought and turned back to Lestan, only then noticing the burrow he had uncovered. A soft hum of curiosity escaped her lips.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 20, 2025

jealousy grabbed lestan again. he told himself it was perfectly natural to admire someone like wake, and that such admiration did not necessarily indicate anything more than — than that.
but he remembered again how the winterwolf had looked upon him, how they — no. no. it was unfair to assume of kirain what he had.
lestan was grateful that her attention seemed to be on hunting as well. he put his nose down toward the leaves and inhaled through the earthen rot and degenerating litter. "ground squirrels. they're down far to avoid the c-cold," he hummed, gathering more details as he circled like a very large fox.
was it worth the rush of energy in a storm for what would amount to a few bites? should they not wait out the snow in hunger and search afterward? lestan lifted his head, listening to the wind.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 20, 2025

Kirain followed his lead, lowering her nose to the ground until she caught the very scent he had mentioned. A quiet hum of acknowledgment escaped her, careful not to disturb the uneasy silence between them. Her ears flicked, straining for any sound beyond the storm’s relentless fury. But it was useless. The wind howled, drowning out everything else, its icy breath lashing against the land with growing ferocity.

Her brow furrowed as she stole a sideways glance at the snow and ice consuming the world around them. Now may not be the time for this, she thought, unease settling deep in her chest. She knew storms like this all too well, the kind that gripped not just the body but the soul, freezing everything in its path. Her tail flicked, betraying the tension coiling within her. She did not want to alarm her new companion, but she couldn’t ignore the truth. The danger was real, and it was closing in fast.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 21, 2025

wind howled, bending down branches until at least one cracked beneath snowy onslaught. its thud to the covered ground could be heard beyond the tiny wood, and lestan turned to regard kirain with apology. "let's h-hunt after the s-storm," he said at last, recovering the burrow's leaves. "we should f-find a d-deeper shelter now," ironically enough!
he moved deeper among the trees, searching; he glanced at kirain with even more apology, for having dragged her here and then fed her nothing.
some hunter!

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 22, 2025

Oblivious to his inner turmoil, she nodded along, her mind too preoccupied with their safety to dwell on a missed meal. As she followed him deeper into the woods, her sharp gaze swept the surroundings, searching for shelter until the storm fully passed.

There wasn’t much to work with, but they had to make do. Spotting a toppled tree that offered some coverage, she padded closer, nostrils flaring as she scented the air for any lingering life. Clear.

Kirain pawed at the ground near the trunk, testing its hardness. It didn’t give easily, but she paid it no mind. With quiet determination, she set to work, clearing away snow and debris. The task was slow and tedious, but at last, she had carved out a makeshift den, crude but serviceable.

Turning to Lestan, her expression softened with quiet apology. It’s not much, but it’ll keep us out of the wind and snow. And with the two of us close, it should be warmer.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 22, 2025

lestan felt gratitude when kirain took the lead, stepping forward to help her clear rotted logs and drifted leaves. these he formed into a heap, a windbreak, and he aided her in scooping up enough black dirt to clear the space.
he reddened a bit to think of lying so close, though it was practical. lestan had simply become used to aloneness in such a regard, and the logical intimacy of shared warmth scared him.
he went inside first as if to quell such notions, tamping down the ground and circling to smooth the entire space. "it's a wonderful f-find. good work, kirain," the mayfair said with feeling, though he gave a little sigh. "i p-promise you, we will tr-track something equally delightful wh-when the storm passes."

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - February 23, 2025

Comforted by his words, she followed him inside, her small frame slipping into the shelter with quiet ease. She settled against one of the walls, leaving ample space for Lestan to rest. Though she had no qualms about sharing, she understood that not everyone was so inclined.

Kirain offered him a warm smile. Don't worry about it for now. Things will get easier once the weather eases. I'm not the strongest hunter, so I'll hold you to that.

Her voice was gentle, laced with encouragement as she sought to soothe his worries.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - February 24, 2025

kirain did not seek to lie close to him, and somehow he felt chagrined by that as well. should he have put himself forth as a source of heat? was that the chivalrous thing to do?
but her gentleness, her continued kindness; these things softened lestan like cold butter on a springtime windowsill. the mayfair found himself smiling a little, playing idly with a torn leaf between his forepaws.
"i w-won't brag, for your sake, of c-course," lestan lightly lampooned. "but i am a very good tracker. and i know all there is to kn-know about both the valley and the taiga. so. you w-will get a nice meal indeed."

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - March 05, 2025

I apologize for the delay! <3

A sharp crack echoed in the distance, branches splintering, torn from trees. Whether it was the wind or the heavy burden of falling snow, she couldn’t say. But the sound sent a jolt through her, instinct driving her closer to Lestan. Her ears pinned back as unease curled in her chest, her body pressing cautiously against his for comfort.

She settled beside him, her silver gaze flickering toward the entrance of their makeshift den, watchful, wary. The night felt too quiet now, the stillness unnerving.

I… I look forward to it. You seem the capable type. Her voice wavered just slightly, betraying the thoughts gnawing at her mind.

Their shared companion, was he safe? Had he found shelter? The uncertainty clawed at her, a desperate hope clinging to the edges of her heart. There was still so much left undone. So much they had yet to accomplish.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - March 05, 2025

no worries at all! <3

"only in one or t-two r-regards," lestan rejoined in self-deprecation, gingerly shifting closer to kirain. for her own needs, he told himself, though the immediate doubling in warmth was nothing short of welcomed.
while lestan cared for arlette and akavir and arric, and the children of the creek, he had no close ties. it was why he had become such a wanderer, not the homebody he had always believed he would be.
no mate and a daughter gone from the wilds. any thought of settling seemed to be further and further away as the months went on.
but as he gazed toward the entrance, aligned in silent unknowing with kirain, lestan knew he could love wake, frightening though the thought was.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - March 05, 2025

The self-deprecation didn’t go unnoticed. It tugged at Kirain’s heart, her gaze flickering to his face, searching for the source of such a mindset. She had meant it when she called him capable. He was well-built, his earthen pelt rich and beautiful, his warm eyes inviting.

I don’t think that’s fair to yourself, she murmured, her voice laced with gentle encouragement. Wake doesn’t choose just anybody. He sees something in you. And even though we’ve only just met, I see it too.

Without a second thought, she leaned in, offering him a soft nuzzle, boundaries long forgotten. The moment lingered before she shifted, sensing the weight of his thoughts and wanting to ease it.

How long have you been with your pack? she asked, steering the conversation in hopes of learning more about him without overwhelming him.

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - March 05, 2025

flooded by the sudden leap of a thousand emotions, lestan closed his eyes in weak resistance of kirain's touch. no one did that for him now; he did not seek it. the mayfair had forgotten how nice it was to be so gently received, the intimacies he had formerly fled now channeling itself into a feeling of dire need.
"almost three years," lestan managed, wondering if the woman would find it untoward should he return her gesture. suspended by unsurety, he did not choose this, but his eyes remained filled with surprise and wonder.
with her kindness and dove-grey pelt, her quick emotional awareness; of course wake had chosen her. "h-how long have you been with him?"
breath hitched in his throat. so careful he was almost clumsy, lestan mimicked the nuzzle that kirain had given.

RE: lorewatch - Kirain - March 05, 2025

Her silver gaze softened as it settled on the Mayfair, a warm smile spreading across her face. That's quite a bit of time... I take it you're a hunter? She encouraged the conversation, welcoming the distraction.

We've been together all winter, Kirain murmured, her voice carrying the weight of memory. We met in autumn among the willows, when life was fading from the world. I remember it so clearly, his kindness.

Her eyes grew distant, unfocused, as her mind drifted back to that day. He saved me. I didn’t realize it at the time. I had pushed myself too far, my body refusing to go on. I was nothing more than a pathetic heap, too weak to defend myself. And then he found me. A quiet sigh escaped her lips before she continued. He could have harmed me... but he didn’t. Instead, he offered me food. He spoke to me with such warmth, so welcoming. I had been alone for so long...

Her words trailed off, a flicker of sorrow glinting in her silver eyes. Without thinking, she leaned into Lestan, resting her head against his shoulder, seeking comfort in his presence.

We've been together ever since... or, we were. Until he left. I worry for him. I miss him...

RE: lorewatch - Lestan - March 05, 2025

again a coursing of jealousy, though somehow turning focus to the connection between their pelts dispelled the sentiment. lestan listened. wake had surely put the high-fierce lens of his attention upon kirain as he had done with the mayfair, scintillating all around until there was no question but to follow.
so why had he gone?
"i miss him also," lestan murmured, feeling more comfortable; he slid his foreleg gently around her shoulders. "i have r-relatives in the c-creek. a cousin and his ch-children." wake had fed kirain, soothed her; a messiah's grace and a devil's smile.
"it is wh-why i stayed. until i m-met wake. i th-think i would f-follow him anywhere," lestan laughed softly, though there was a pained look in his eyes. "perhaps we were meant to meet. a l-little serendipity, from him."
