incommunicado - Bushtit - February 17, 2025 During his brief visit with her, his mother had casually asked him to deliver a message for her. “It’s not urgent. Just,” she’d said to him, “if you get the chance, could you stop by Moonspear and check in with @Killdeer? Ask him him if he’s setting any plans in motion.” When he’d asked her what plans she meant, she’d refused to tell him, despite a lot of wheedling and whinging. He supposed that was Towhee’s way of compelling him to deliver the message: she knew he would want to get the scoop on these plans. Bushtit snorted as he walked beneath the snowy boughs of The Heartwood, barely paying attention to his surroundings as his mind whirled. He wouldn’t ordinarily need any extra motivation—he was happy to run errands for his mom—but he supposed he did need that little push toward Moonspear. Look, he loved Treepie and he knew she loved him. That was the whole problem. She could be really overbearing. Bushtit had never complained but as he emerged on the far side of the forest and peered up at the mountain, he wondered if Towhee had ever sensed it. He drew in a breath, just hoping that his cousin wouldn’t be nearly as interested in him now that he wasn’t a baby anymore. Puffing up his pale chest a bit, he strode across Firefly Glen. He made good time, reaching the foot of the mountain well before midday. He hoped maybe they’d feed him lunch, then he could spend the rest of the day—or as long as he could stomach Pie’s fawning—here, finding out everything he could about these mysterious plans. Luckily for him, this is set just before Treepie returns. Anyone’s welcome! :)
RE: incommunicado - Killdeer - February 20, 2025 Luckily for Bushtit, it was Killdeer rather than Treepie that found him. The Hierophant was on his usual patrols, weaving a slow perimeter 'round the mountain, when the pale form approached the border. With a happy chuff, he trotted down to meet his uncle (so strange, given the age difference!) with a broad smile. Hey, kid,Killer greeted, tail wagging. What brings you here? Where's your ma? Bushtit had arrived alone. It wasn't a surprise, given his last conversation with Towhee; the boy had inherited the family's wandering spirit. Still, there was that tiniest bit of worry that set a lump in his throat— Had he come to announce Gramma's death? RE: incommunicado - Bushtit - February 21, 2025 He let out a little sigh of relief when Killdeer came bounding down to greet him. There was no sign of Treepie or anyone else, just his nephew. Bushtit grinned at his relative, his own tail low and wriggling as he touched his nose to the man’s chin, equal parts affection and deference. Hey! She’s relaxing with padre in the lowlands,Bushtit replied without thinking. Catching himself, he quickly amended, She’s with Soto. Her leg’s been bothering her, so she’s resting. She actually sent me here with a message, something about setting big plans in motion? He playfully leered at Killdeer, his dark gaze demanding answers. What were these plans? How did they involve his mother, not to mention the man before him? If he had to guess, Bushtit supposed Towhee perhaps planned to relocate to Moonspear when she could. That would be a little anticlimactic… RE: incommunicado - Killdeer - February 23, 2025 Padre? Soto? His brows drew together in puzzlement, trying to figure out whether she'd mentioned someone by that name—those names?—before. And as far as the message Towhee was sending— It's. . .in progress, I guess?Killdeer replied, sucking air through his teeth in a slight grimace. I was thinking about setting up a pack at Redhawk Caldera. Where I was born. Where your mom was born. He couldn't help but grin at the implication. She sent you here to check up on that?Killer asked, cocking his head. Clearly, she had bought into the idea. Now, he just had to set it into motion. I guess you could tell her it's. . .possible. Probable?he added, trailing off. He wished he could say for sure. He was loath to abandon Moonspear, especially now. But if they needed a new home. . . RE: incommunicado - Bushtit - February 24, 2025 Oh, what?came Bushtit’s rejoinder as he chewed on this information. Ignoring the slight jealousy over being the odd man out here, he added, Yeah, I mean, she just asked me to ask you about it. She wouldn’t give me any details. Huh,he went on musingly, I will. Tell her, I mean. Why was Towhee invested enough to send him inquiring, he wondered? Was she considering joining Killdeer there rather than here? It actually made a lot of sense to him that she might want to settle down there, considering just how much time they spent camping there. But he had to ignore a second jolt of jealousy as he eyed his elder nephew. What about Moonspear, though?he wondered, gesturing at the nearby slopes. RE: incommunicado - Killdeer - March 05, 2025 It's not a secret or anything,he replied, chuckling. She's probably just teasing you, not telling you about it. That's Towhee for ya. What about Moonspear, indeed. If Killdeer had a morsel of prey for every time he'd asked himself that question, he'd never go hungry again. Our numbers here are down,he began slowly, face pensive. Sialuk was kind of the glue holding it all together, and she went out exploring indefinitely. I was staying for my kids here, but they're nearly all grown up. I feel like, if I'm going to do this, now is my chance. All that said, he settled onto his haunches and turned his ears curiously toward Bushtit. Who's this Soto guy?Killer asked the boy with a smirk. His Gramma's newest squeeze, no doubt. RE: incommunicado - Bushtit - March 05, 2025 She’s such a turd,Bushtit agreed sagely. His head tilted when Killdeer further explained the situation. He didn’t know Sialuk well at all, though he knew just enough to feel surprised at her departure. Bushtit knew he should probably ask if Treepie was okay, though the thought made his insides squirm. He really didn’t want to risk becoming her emotional support animal. Luckily, his relative changed the subject. The question surprised laugh out of Bushtit. His dark eyes sparkled. He didn’t know that story? He’s my dad! He’s pretty cool, though he doesn’t really speak our language. I’m trying to learn his, though, and he’s picking up some Ptero. His tail waved. Guess you don’t really need to talk much to make a baby,he posited with a boyish laugh. RE: incommunicado - Killdeer - March 21, 2025 Killdeer burst out in laughter at the kid's response, grinning widely. Maybe he could become Bushtit's partner-in-crime in deviling his grandmother. No, you don't,he replied to that last bit, grin fading into a smirk, and then altogether. Is he and your Ma together? Like, a couple? He hadn't heard anything of the sort, but there was always the possibility Towhee was keeping this guy close to the vest. What kind of language does he speak?Killer asked, moving past the subject in case it was an awkward one. Teach me a word or two. RE: incommunicado - Bushtit - March 24, 2025 It made him feel kind of incredible when he made someone laugh. He returned Killdeer’s grin, dark eyes sparkling with his own amusement at the subsequent query. Nah, they get along but they’re not together. I’m not even sure if I’d call them friends,he reported honestly. I guess the language barrier probably plays into that, especially with her deafness. That’s why I’m trying to teach him—and everybody else in Verapaz—how to sign. Killdeer seemed curious about Soto’s tongue. Bushtit opened his mouth to share its name only to draw a blank. He blinked stupidly, though it finally came to him after a few awkward seconds. It’s called Spanish. Well, you already know one: padre. He paused, clicking his tongue. That there’s a montaña,he added, flicking a pale toe toward toward Moonspear. I’ve been trying to learn landscapes,he continued, eyes flitting around as he searched for something else to name. Hell if I know the word for glen, but it’s pretty much a forest: bosque. RE: incommunicado - Killdeer - March 31, 2025 A foreign language plus deafness seemed tricky—though, like Bushtit had alluded, the language of love conquered all. He mouthed the words Bushtit spoke, smiling in the process. He had the benefit of knowing ptero from a young age; the boy might well become a seasoned translator sooner or later. Sounds good to me,Killdeer remarked. How far are the lowlands from the caldera? If you're going back and forth, I'm assuming they're pretty close. The last time I was that way, I went as far as Akashingo, that kingdom on the mesa. He wondered whether he should send Bushtit with good tidings their way, in the name of diplomacy, and ultimately decided not to. Last time he heard, they were entangled with some kind of conflict on their borders; he didn't want to drag Moonspear into that. He cocked his head. So, if I start this pack on Redhawk Caldera, are you gonna be there?the man asked, giving his young uncle an ingratiating smile. RE: incommunicado - Bushtit - April 02, 2025 Not far,Bushtit confirmed, but I dunno anything about a pack at the mesa. Like,he continued, glancing over his shoulder as if he could see it from this distance, the one a little east of the caldera? I don’t think anyone lives there, much less an entire kingdom. He faced the older male again, shrugging. When Killdeer asked him whether he’d join up should the Redhawks revive their claim on the caldera, a forepaw rubbed sheepisly at the back of his neck. I mean, I’ll visit mom if she’s there. But I like traveling and don’t plan to stay anywhere anytime soon,he said truthfully. Maybe I could be an honorary member, like I am with Verapaz? On that note, he should head back that way to finish this game of teléfono. Bushtit kind of wanted to hang out with Killdeer a bit longer and shoot the breeze. But he was on a mission and, besides, he wanted to dip before Treepie possibly showed up. An idea struck, prompting him to say, Wanna come with me? At least as far as the caldera, if not all the way to the lowlands? But it’s really not far. You’ll see.Bushtit motioned eagerly. C’mon! I’m going to put this goober on the NPC shelf, so I was hoping you could fade this for us and wrap the one with Fiamma as well?
RE: incommunicado - Killdeer - April 17, 2025 Hmmm. Akashingo was enough of a force that Bushtit would have noticed. Perhaps they had relocated? He would have to investigate for himself, when he was closer. Sure, that's fine,Killdeer said amiably, and smiled at the boy's invitation to check out his padre's home. Of course! Lead the way. He followed his young uncle onward, interested to see what came next. |
