the fog hangs low, thick enough to taste. the ground of the forest gives underfoot—soft, wet, sucking. he moves slow. careful. not quiet. but careful.
he was on the trail of something that had passed through here. the dew broken, track split. a sharp edge to the print—hoof. deep drag on the left side. injured.
luhtar follows with a low head, nose sniffing every few steps, then he stops. listening. a crow calls once, far off. not for him.
there—blood on the bark. faint and old but not stale. the wind shifts, carrying the scent back to him. his ears perk upwards and the boulder of a man treks onward.
