[M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Fancy - March 26, 2025

all welcome!

Though the copper-toned filly dozed peacefully amongst the unfurling ferns, her mother paced nearby, attempt to distract herself by grazing on the fiddleheads, though she knew her appetite was for something else. She muttered to herself quietly, uttering the names of Breedmasters as she named them, one by one.

@Selenia, bless her heart, was shooed away with pinned ears and a high-pitched squeal. A flirting whip of her tail was all she could give as a means of communication as she sought space- knowing her herdmate would understand.

It was for @Colosseum that she cried out, though her shrill tone would carry and attract the attention of any capable of supplicating her demands. Their herd stallion had defended his position once before- and she would have him do the same again, should another arrive and challenge for his breeding claim.

And if none- then the dark roan would easily suffice.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Colosseum - March 26, 2025

the call pierced the meadow—shrill, sharp, unmistakable.

colosseum lifted his head at once. ears pricked. muscles tensed beneath his thick hide, the sun glinting off the dark sheen of his flank. breath puffed out in a huff as his eyes cut toward the voice that summoned him.

he moved without hesitation. a slow, commanding gait that turned to a trot, then to a thunderous lope across the glade. ferns parted beneath the weight of his hooves. earth trembled faintly in his wake.

he came to a halt with a snort, heavy and resonant. nostrils flared. his dark tail flicked as he surveyed her, the pacing, the need etched in the curve of her back and the set of her jaw.

he stepped close.

no words—none needed.

he lowered his massive head, nudging her shoulder with a gentle but firm touch. a breath huffed into her mane. then another nudge.

he moved, nose raking along her abdomen, her hip bone. my mare

his stance hardened, then. muscles rippling, tail lashing. he showed her the girth of his neck, look at how i provide!, all the whilst he kept a close look beyond the borders.

cameo! <3

the earpin was automatic; selenia smoothed it out and gathered pippin closer to the napping filly.

when maplesmoke had come to claim her, fancy had watched silverbirch, and it would be the same for her.

buckskin mare planted herself between foals and foray, nipping new grass in short bites.

not long, not long before her own time came. colosseum had proven to be a strong protector. but stallions in this band often did not live or stay to see their own foals.

in the meantime, if the filly woke hungry, selenia would nurse her too, keeping the little ones away from the weighted tread and flashing heels of equine courtship.

Her ears flicked forward as he approached, and with interest bright in her eyes she stretched out her neck so she might touch her nose to his, nostrils flaring as she inhaled for a moment. She fell still as his breath fanned along her skin, drawing a deep shudder to her withers that spread throughout her entire body in a vigorous shake.

His neck arched and she reached yet again, to touch noses- inching closer and closer with a stretch that flared the muscles along the top line of her neck.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Colosseum - April 05, 2025

colosseum’s breath hitched the moment her scent deepened.

fancy. fancy. fancy.

she reached for him and he met her, nose to nose, the heat of her skin like wildfire against his own. her breath filled his lungs as surely as his own, and for a heartbeat, the hollow fell away—no wind, no foals, no herd. just her.
his neck arched with a low, primal rumble, tail lifting, muscles rippling beneath roan hide as he took one slow step closer. not a charge. not a chase. invitation.

he bumped her muzzle gently, and then drew along the curve of her jaw, nostrils flaring wide as he breathed her in—her want, her warmth, her readiness.
a deep chuff pulsed from his chest as he pressed his shoulder briefly to hers, flank brushing as he passed.

not demanding.
just present.
just his.

he circled her once, a slow orbit drawn tight by instinct, hooves whispering against the ground, body thick with tension he held close—coiled, respectful, waiting.

but the message was clear, carved into every line of his stance:

if she wanted him, she had him.
no hesitation.
no question.
just yes.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Fancy - April 08, 2025

Her heart sung with every heated breath she took, her blood warmed until it felt as though it might singe her veins. Her neck bent elegantly at the poll as she reached to brush the soft, velveteen of her nose against his, lips quivering as his whiskers tickled her cheek. For a moment she was there, receptive, interested-

-only the light flick of her left ear might prove itself to be a tell-

-and with a high pitched, multiphonic, nearly super-sonic -WHRRRREEEEEEEEK!- she transformed.

In the fluttering of an eyelash her head whipped back and nostrils flared to expose the pink membranes deep within. Her ears pinned flat, blending in with the whipping sorrel forelock that lifted to expose the topmost peak of her narrow blaze.

He moved to circle her and she wheeled cleverly on the forehand, ducking her head as if to use it as a counterweight for the hind end that she swung toward him suddenly, only a moment before she coughed out a thunderous snort and aimed a harmless cow-kick in his direction. She gauged the distance between them with a glance over one shoulder to make certain that he would hear the snap of one ankle, but not feel the land of a hoof.

Off she pranced then, tossing him a glance over one shoulder, four beats of a two track to gauge his reaction.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Colosseum - April 08, 2025

he felt her heat before her skin met his. a trembling brush of velvet to velvet, the flicker of interest in her breath.
there it was.
that sliver of invitation.
that pulse of yes—maybe.
colosseum arched his neck to meet her—soft, slow, reverent—
—and then she exploded.
the shriek ripped through the hollow like a bird of prey loosed from her throat. her head snapped back, fire in her eyes, and colosseum only grinned.
ah, he breathed, low and half-laughed in his chest, just as her hips turned sharp.
the kick whistled past his chest—close enough to stir the hairs of his coat. his ears flicked but he didn’t flinch. she hadn’t meant to land it, and he knew the difference.
he stood still, planted like stone, watching her prance away with that look she always wore when she wanted to be followed.
not caught.
followed.
he huffed once—playful, indulgent—and gave a toss of his head, tail flagging as he stepped into her rhythm, hooves catching her beat in a slow, circling stalk. not rushed. not begging.
but there.
behind her.
with her.
his body curved with hers, tracking her like tide to moon.
colosseum always followed when fancy ran.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Fancy - April 11, 2025

He shadowed her as she cut a ring around the small herd, unwilling to stray from the sight of others. Privacy, after all, was not worth the risk it might cost the others.

Her ears flicked when he came close. She pivoted, and lunged into a lope in a counter-clockwise circle with a toss of her mane, until she found some space-

And then, as if she had suddenly lost interest she slowed to a walk, lowered her head and began to graze, a swish of her tail the only sign she paid him any attention at all. One flick of her left ear offered some suggestion- that her attention could be caught, if it was earned.

And she wanted him to earn it.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Colosseum - April 15, 2025

colosseum watched her with that heavy, hooded gaze—half-lidded, but never unaware.

she cut her circle sharp, mane tossing, fire in her stride. he followed like tide to shore, each hooffall deliberate, but not eager. no rush. no claim.

she slowed.
pretended disinterest.

tested him.

he huffed, the sound low and amused, shaking dust from his shoulders as he curved toward her grazing shape. she didn’t look, but the flick of her ear said more than any glance ever could.

fine, he thought. she wanted a dance.

he pivoted on a forehoof, stepped wide around her with the casual grace of a stallion who knew what mares like fancy required—patience wrapped in pride, power that didn’t need to beg.

he dropped his head low, pawed once at the earth as if inspecting it, then snapped his neck with a toss, tail flagging behind him in a wide arc.

a quiet show.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Fancy - April 20, 2025

Everything blasé about her behavior was false. Internally, she wanted closeness, to run alongside him, to give in- and to demand as much from him as he could possibly give, to ensure that next year’s goal might glean a little bit of his roan genes.

She thought momentarily he might snake and begin to herd her- instead, he whipped his head back, cracking his tail like a whip. She’d found a patch of green clovers. Her ears were pricked when she paused to chew, but she looked quite content to continue snacking in this area where green shoots were coming up everywhere.

She turned her hind end to him, whisking away imaginary flies, offering glimpses of pink flesh before she continued to roam forward, one step at a time- still invested in eating as many of these clovers as she could.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Colosseum - April 24, 2025

he watched her with the eye of a storm held at bay.

fancy, all cool indifference and clover-chewing grace. but colosseum saw through it. the way her ears twitched to catch his every sound, the flick of her tail too deliberate to be aimless. the roan knew the dance well—she wanted him near, wanted his fire, but not without a test of his worth.

his hide twitched. his muscles rippled beneath the dusk-kissed sheen of sweat and dust.

colosseum stepped forward. no herding, not for her. no force. he’d never needed that. he was too proud a beast, too old and known in the land to chase a mare who didn't wish it. but fancy—oh, she wished it. she just wanted him to make it count.

he closed the space between them with heavy silence, his breath warm when it reached her flank. he lowered his head, lips brushing along the edge of her hip—not possessive, not even flirtatious. reverent.

RE: [M] The Ballad of Lonely Bear - Fancy - April 26, 2025

Normally, she might have wanted a parade, a dance, even to be herded about as a show of his ability to perform a stallion’s duty- but Colosseum had proven himself in other ways. The gentle but firm hand with which he led and protected the herd, the respect he showed the mares and the investment he had in sharing and receiving both stories and advice. He would not need to be tested for merit- he had already proven himself.

She welcomed his touch, simultaneously flirtatious and demure- and returned the gesture with soft brushes of her muzzle and warm breaths of her own. The man who had won the herd would earn the gift of becoming a father the next Spring.

I’m good to fade if you want one more post <3
