Moon, a hole of light - Ludovicus - April 05, 2025

Things were different now. Julienne was gone, papa no longer visited, and they now lived in a den they called an ulaq.

Ludovicus liked the wolves who lived here. They brought treats to him and Ignace, spoke to maman and made her smile more than he had ever seen her smile before. He didn't know very much, but he knew that he was glad to be on the mountain.

Legs growing steady, nose more adventurous, the boy rose to his paws in the late night. Maman and Ignace were sleeping soundly, but a smell had forced him wide awake; foul, rotten, and sulfurous. Despite the way it made him reel back, his curiosity brought him out from the cover of the ulaq and into the moonlight. Nose twitching he followed the scent into the cover of a bush, sticking his head through the leaves and branches with some struggle.

Blinking dirt from his eyes before opening, he was greeted by a creature he had never seen before; black with white stripes and a big, bushy tail. Spotting Ludo, the pin-headed animal let out a hiss, a sound the pup had never heard before.

Nearly jumping back and out of the bush, he shook his fur out.

A smell so foul it made her eyes water had Tiki lifting her head from her spot overlooking the mountains. She shifted and moved towards it. She knew this scent, and it was rank. But they did not spray for no reason and as such, she found herself curious.

THough the closer she got the mores her eyes watered. It took to blowing her nose every few steps to get teh burn from inside. It was awful.

She was thrown from her curious thoughts when she saw the little pup. Looking at a bush and shaking it's fur as if it's life depended on it. She moved a paw to cover her nose. But knew she had to do something.  He would need rolled in flowers and the spring andthen flowers again. He had a long night upon him. Depending how bad the stinky butt had gotten him.

Spotting a wolf, he was quick to squeak and skip over to them. He had not been sprayed, but it was clear from the lingering scent that before he found the skunk another animal had not been so lucky.

Front legs rising to place them on the other, he looked back to the bush where the skunk soon darted out and ran down the mountain. Ludo stuck his tongue out at the smelly thing with a "blegh" sound. It had been quite rude to him!

But in the end, he was not hurt. Not that he knew of. An uninjured pelt was the important part.

Tiki couldn't quite hide the smile at the little guys squeak. He raced towards her and she braced herself for impact or worse yet the smell. But it didn't seem to follow him as much as she would have thought it did. She bent her head to meet his little forehead. Took a gentle perusal sniff. So it was on him, but not stuck. So He hadn't been sprayed. Good.

Tiki laughed then. Hello little one. Skunks are stinky aren't they.

She balanced him as he leaned against her with small paws. She felt her eyes crinkle at the corners. God he was cute.

I'm Tikaani, but you can call me Tiki.

He was quick to nod in agreement. It was mean. He said, eyes fixed to where the skunk had run off. Maybe it was angry because it smelt so horrible.

The other introduced herself, and he was quick to repeat her name. Tiki. A way of cementing it into his mind - it would be rude to forget. Maman calls me Ludo. She had shared her nickname, so he offered his own. He like it better than his full name anyways, loo-doh-vick-uss was a bit of a mouthful for him.

Part of him was surprised that maman had not come out running yet, teeth bared, but then again he had made a point not to scream because of that. He did not want to get in trouble for wandering out of then den in the night; no matter how close he had stayed, he would be scolded all the same. He preferred to leave the trouble for Ignace and his snapping jaws.

Tiki felt her heart melt a little more when the young boy said it had been mean the skunk. Poor little guy she felt bad for him. It was always bad when you met the tail end of a skunk. She watched it go. IT seemed intent to leave as quickly as possible.

A nod to acknowledge that he knew and could say her name. Her full name she understood was not easy for anyone really. Nice to meet you Ludo.

A small tilt of her head. Should we get you back to your mama?

He had to consider her words for a moment. Getting back in without his maman or his brother noticing was not something he had considered before slipping out.

..Quietly. Maman is sleeping. Front paws placed on the ground once more, he creeped back towards the ulaq. Glancing back to Tikaani, it seemed that he was waiting for her to follow him. This was their secret mission - together.

He looked deep in thought. Thr little crease between his wolfish brows was absolutely adorable. It didn't take him long it seemed to determine something.

She saw him creeping. And slowly went into a quiet crouch. She was not small anymore. But she could be silent. She offered him the briefest of winks and followed.

Just as he thought, maman was still inside the den curled up with Ignace - all too unaware of his disappearance. Lucky for him! Smiling at Tikaani, he could not help but wag his tail.

I won't tell anyone you're still awake, just don't tell on me. Ludo still had a bedtime, and he wasn't quite aware that older wolves did not. Nonetheless, with that promise in mind he snuck back inside and nuzzled into his spot against Pala's belly fur.

What a fun game that had been! He would have to track Tiki down once more when it was daylight.

Tiki watched as he settled into the ulaq that was his home nestled among his sibling and his mother. A pang of longing settled over Tiki. She had alwalys had pie, but there had been more of them born and they were the only two left. It was painful.

She mimed covering her mouth and crossing her heart. He was safe. She would remember to watch out for him more if he was prone to night wanderings.
