^_____________________^ - Treepie - April 07, 2025

It wasn’t hard to think of herself as a Regent instead of an Emprex, seeing as she’d only held the latter title for a matter of weeks. The new one brought a smile to her face as she finished delivering a meal to the village’s only mother. She had asked @Alaric if they could choose titles more suited to them and was rather pleased with the outcome. She hoped the Sovereign felt the same.

It was tempting to take a nap after a hard day’s work of hunting, caching and distributing food. But instead of finding the nearest puddle of sunshine to bask like a lazy cat, Tiuttuk tipped her snout into the breeze and tried to capture @Glaûkos’s scent. She had just enough energy left over for a solid spar.

The wind was too still at present to convey any fresh trace, so Treepie pointed her snout toward the snowy peak and howled in the hopes of pinpointing his location.

It wasn't finished yet, but it was well underway— the sparring pit, which was more like a bare space of rock surrounded by the many shattered pieces of rotten trees, would need another day or two before there was an ample supply of space. At least to Glaukos' liking.

When the call rose up from Tiuttuk, Glaukos was shoving at a pile of debris in an effort to tip it off of a nearby ledge, freeing up more space. He was breathing heavily; but after a moment to catch his breath, his chin lifts and he issues a reply call.

He paced a moment after, waiting for her to arrive and witness the work he had done. Maybe she wouldn't appreciate the amount of destruction he'd perpetrated upon her mountain?

His prompt response came from a westerly direction, perhaps a little higher than her current altitude. She hastened that way, winding around the peak even as she climbed it. The sun had begun its descent toward the horizon, casting a bit of a glare. Pie didn’t mind it, squinting her yellow eyes and enjoying the warmth on her dark face.

The smell of churned earth and rotted wood drew drew her toward a clearing she had never seen before, if only because it hadn’t really existed until now. Tiuttuk paused at the edge, shielding her eyes with one foreleg as they panned from the downed trees to the fragrant mulch scattered underfoot. She set down her leg with a loud blink, now looking at Glaukos.

You did this? she asked, not waiting for an answer before an impressed, Wow, escaped her.

He had finally caught his breath, with the sun beaming down across the soot of his coat and helping his muscles to relax, if a little bit. Tiuttuk arrived swiftly; her surprise earned a cursory glance from Glaukos as he stalked closer.

It is not finished. In Mereo we had many clear places for sparring, and our pit was at least twice this size. It will do for now. He wasn't trying to be modest - but his body wasn't happy with all the shoving, clawing, and dragging.

He looked upon his work and did not appear moved by it. Not pleased, not bothered. When he looked to the girl he asked, Did you want a lesson?

RE: ^_____________________^ - Treepie - April 10, 2025

Yes, she replied without missing a beat, eyes tracking Glaukos as he prowled closer, unless…

Her bright eyes cut away from his face, once more sweeping the cleared land. She took a step, meaning to walk the perimeter. It looked suitable to her, though she deferred to his expertise. Glaukos clearly knew his trade. She imagined he would become one of Moonspear’s artisans soon enough.

I came here hoping to spar, though I wouldn’t mind helping you finish if you’d rather we do that? It’s up to you.

He draws a sharp breath, looking over his work and what remained to be done. It would be faster with more jaws and he knew that, but he coveted his work and did not think Tiuttuk would be strong enough to push down the elder trees, rotten as they were and eager for their own collapse.

It takes a second survey before he sees the merit of it: much like the way Germanicus would have his soldiers run drills, or shove boulders, or do tasks that did not outwardly appear beneficial to the job as a soldier, Glaukos could do the same.

If I push over more trees, you will clear the debris? He posed it as a question because the girl was his superior, and because he could not swallow that undercurrent of doubt.

The trees are old and they are rotten. The pieces will be easy to move once broken down.

He weighed the offer, Pie patiently looking around while she waited. Was it strange that she rather liked the smell of it, the damp, rotten wood? She drew in a deep breath, sussing through all the layers of the odor, though her attention quickly flicked back to him at the sound of Glaukos’s voice.

I can do that, she agreed, her lips parting in a quiet laugh as she thought aloud, We did discuss laying some groundwork…

She chuffed to herself, then nodded at him to resume his work. Pie didn’t think it would be particularly complicated, even if it was difficult. She rolled her neck and shoulders, already limber from a hard day’s work, and imagined she would have no trouble falling asleep tonight.

RE: ^_____________________^ - Glaûkos - April 10, 2025

He heard the joke but didn't react in a way that indicated anything - either that he heard it or found it funny. Glaukos wasn't exactly a comedic figure (except in the tragic sense).

Moving along the edge of the clearing, he rounded to a patch of forest which he had only freshly begun to assess prior to Tiuttuk arriving. He walked around the base of one tree or another, then moved so his shoulder was aligned with one that looked particularly weak.

Stand clear! He roughly commanded, not wanting the girl to be crushed along with the mountainside.

First he reared up and pressed his weight on it, leveraged with a little hop, and punched with forelegs reaching. There was a shudder to the tree but not much movement otherwise. It would take a few tries before Glaukos brought this particular tree down — a chorus of splitting wood and crushing foliage to follow.

RE: ^_____________________^ - Treepie - April 10, 2025

She shadowed his steps, at least until his booming command sent her wheeling backward. Treepie took up a position on the far side of the makeshift clearing, watching raptly as Glaukos reared onto his hind legs to press his weight against the tree’s trunk. It put his well-muscled body on full display.

She swallowed a little thickly, her ears pinning to her skull at the sound of cracking wood. Pie backed up another few steps for good measure, yellow eyes flicking from Glaukos to the yielding trunk, then back to the warrior’s bunched muscles as he essentially forced the tree into submission.

RE: ^_____________________^ - Glaûkos - April 15, 2025

Another few heaves and the tree split and began to collapse, but it didn't go all the way. Roots upended and so Glaukos had to stop and reconfigure himself in the best possible location for the job; meanwhile, the tree he had thought would be an easy clear, proved to be stuck. He went around one side and tried to get a better view - only to find he was too large to snake in and out of the gaps produced by the angle of the tree's haphazard tilt.

He didn't want to ask Tiuttuk to do anything in case the tree rolled, or something came dislodged. The last thing he needed was Alaric blaming him for a flattened teenage regent. He moved quickly to another tree, and then another until he found one that was straining beneath the weight of the rotten lean-to that had been created.

The soldier backed up a step or two, tested his grip on the soil, and then moved like a bull to ram his shoulder in to this smaller tree. A violent cracking proceeded this attempt, as well as a bloom of wood pulp, and as Glaukos ducked and lurched out from under the falling cacophony he moved to shelter Tiuttuk too, just in case.

None of this had gone as he'd planned and he wasn't keen on being blamed for any injuries.

RE: ^_____________________^ - Treepie - April 17, 2025

But the tree did not relent entirely. It was fascinating, watching Glaukos troubleshoot. She thought about offering to help, though Treepie was pretty useless in this endeavor. She had neither his brute strength, nor his seemingly keen sense for physics. He knew exactly what he was doing, so she stood by and observed.

He shoved down a smaller tree, removing the first tree’s crutch and sending both earthward. Glaukos ducked out of the way, incidentally blocking her view. Or perhaps it was deliberate. She blinked up at him, realizing he was trying to shelter her as she felt the impact shudder beneath their feet. Her ears twitched at the noise, which quickly lapsed into silence.

Stepping around him, Treepie beheld the downed trees and said simply, Nice.
