ego death - Glaûkos - April 15, 2025

Hoping to use this for trade stuff!

It had been several days since the clearing had been finished. Whatever couldn't be collected and cleared away after the felling of the rotten trees, Glaukos had shoved in to piles and scattered across the mountainside. The recent rains had soaked these patches and made the area smell fetid—which would not last forever, but wasn't exactly an appealing component of the new training field.

The soldier marched the outer limits of this clearing; it was very early in the morning, with dawn just beginning to bloom with color around the peak of the mountain. Glaukos warmed himself up with a jog around the perimeter, and then picked up the pace and went again, stopping only when he felt adequately warmed up for the full day of patrols he had planned.

He thought about calling forth @Alaric for a spar, but didn't immediately jump at the chance.

RE: ego death - Alaric - April 16, 2025

Alaric had watched from a distance. Silent but wary in his border patrols. But he had kept an eye on the inside of their borders too. Glaukos seemed to be settling in nicely.

Alaric wasn't a fan of thr terrible smell in the patch of cleared ground. But he was curious about the pit itself. He wondered what it was. It looked a bit like a ritual circle or a sparring pit both of which he'd seen on his trading journies.

Alaric leapt from a nearby rock finally showing himself and eyed the pit. So ritual circle or sparring pit?

The field held a rocky composition, being formed through the clearing of trees upon the mountain's western face. It was quite large compared to a wolf such as Glaukos, and would serve the purpose of a training space very well. If he ran from one end to the other, he would be nearly out of breath after the sprint—definitely so if he ran back again to his starting position. It was longer than it was wide, and the edges frayed in to the remains of rotted forest and new after-fire growth that cloaked Moonspear.

Glaukos looked out upon his work, which he had shared briefly with Tiuttuk for a day or two, and was pleased enough with what had been done. This was the moment that Alaric found him; his voice carrying from a gap in the woods which connected to one of the many patrol routes.

The soldier looked sharply after the man, and took a deep breath. A training field. Tiuttuk wanted to be trained. You did not have a good space for it before.

Pacing, Glaukos found the center of the field and squared-off to Alaric's position.

Would you help me test the space?

RE: ego death - Alaric - April 17, 2025

I usually do very simple rolls. 1d5 or 1d10 and hp of 30. The roll is the hit. Of course I am fine with adding extra hp or Alaric roll 1d5 and Glaukos 1d10 for his mercenary trade? I have to do it simpler than most people or I won't understand.

The field was rocky, but it wasn't terrible. Though Glaukos would be hard pressed to find any place on this mountain that didn't have mountainous rock in it. Glaukos had certainly put in a lot of work for this pit. Alaric was impressed.

Alaric nodded his head. I don't imagine we did. Moonspear has always been healers and seers. Very seldom have we had fighters of any kind. Some of us can defend ourselves if we must, but we are not professionally trained. I myself am more of a healer than a fighter. But I have been alone long enough to know my way around a fight.

Alaric blinked and then nodded. I can't promise much competition, but sure.

Wanna do 1D10 rolls? Anything 6+ is a hit, and we can just conclude the thread when we've gotten tired of it? So no need to monitor HP.

Alaric shared information which matched with what Tiuttuk had said before, and it made sense. What use were warriors so high on a mountain? What use were warriors when the world below was so far below them? Glaukos wondered when there was last a war in this place, or any reason at all for bloodshed, but the thoughts faded promptly as they had no bearing on his job, today.

It is good to know one's limits. He answers, settling in to a fighter's stance in the center of the field.

He looked to Alaric as he would any new recruit: studying the way he held himself, his movement should he begin to move, and any tells that might give Glaukos an indication of what was to come next. Come on then, show me what you can do.

RE: ego death - Alaric - April 17, 2025

Sure that works for me.  I rolled a 9 Here

Alaric was not a fighter this much had been truth. He was a healer, a bard, a storyteller. But what he didn't share, because Glaukos had no right to know about him in that capacity. No one did. The one wolf he had shared it with was gone. He had been in an abusive relationship for quite some time and as such he had learned to defend himself. It had taken some time.

True enough.

What Alaric didn't have in brute strength, he made it up in speed. And living on the mountains had given him beautiful lung strength, and strong limbs. So it was these positives he utilized. He ran head on as if going straight for the face, then veered with a burst of speed. Aiming at shoulder and side. Noting not to break skin. This was a spar, not an actual fight.

Rolled a 6!

The man was fast. It was a surprise to Glaukos, who had not anticipated the efficiency of Alaric's movement or his direct approach, as he came rushing for a headlong assault. It wasn't until the last moment, as he almost danced around Glaukos, that a hit landed across the soldier's shoulder. Glaukos braced against it and so he did not fall, but he felt the brunt of the collision and grit his teeth.

Then, with Alaric so close, he reached out and snapped his teeth at some part of Alaric as a means of tagging back. Glaukos was not delicate even if it was just a spar, and the force of which he grabbed the man would leave a bruise—but then the scene would reset, and the two men would watch one-another in anticipation for the next attempt.

Rolled a 2

The look on the man's face stroked Alaric's ego a little bit. He didn't seem fast, he knew this. But he was a runner, a racer. Loved being reckless and fancy free. He was also an entertainer and as such he was a dancer. Graceful. However, with all things a little fragile, they were easily broken and bruised. Proven in his assault and retaliation of the man Glaukos.

He had rocked the other males world so to speak, but before he could go for another hit. The bite that landed for a moment blinded him with sharp pain. It was not meant to hurt as a true fight would. But it would leave a mark none the less. And as such, Alaric had to dance backwards. Snapping back, but missing completely as he back pedaled.

Rolled a 6!

Glaukos had intended to stay in one place, to serve as the defender while Alaric was the attacker, but he was swept up in the moment. As Alaric fell back and snapped, and missed, and was pushed out of the center of the field, Glaukos focused and lunged.

He saw that one of Alaric's greatest strengths was his ability to move; and as he did not want to dissuade the man from training in the future, he would have to be careful. He moved in the manner of a charging bull to ram in to Alaric and potentially send him off-balance.

RE: ego death - Alaric - April 17, 2025

Rolled a 1

Alaric was not expecting the lunge as he fell back to regroup. As such he couldn't fully get his feet under him. He had been aiming for his speed to be amadvantage, but it seemed Glaukos wouldn't let him. Which was smart honestly.

The blow came and hit just right. It drove the air from his lungs. And he stumbled hitting a knee or two.

RE: ego death - Glaûkos - April 17, 2025

End there? (Rolled a 9!)

The man was down. He scrambled, but Glaukos was looming over him and at the ready, so when he failed to rise it wasn't long before Glaukos was pinning Alaric to the earth and loosening a low rumble. He hadn't meant to, but the fervor of their spar had summoned it out of him.

He pushed his weight over Alaric and held him firmly in place, perhaps a touch too rough given the fact it was a spar and not a true fight. After a moment longer to make sure the other man understood his loss, Glaukos relented. He withdrew and gave the man space.

You are faster than I expected, he commented in his dry way.

I think that is enough for now. Glaukos shakes the tension from his shoulders, striding in the manner of a proud lion having defended his territory—but the enthusiasm was quickly swallowed, buried.

RE: ego death - Alaric - April 17, 2025

sure. I did one more roll got a 2

Alaric did not appreciate the roughness with which he was held. And in a brief moment a memory spiked of such a hold down and worse things happening besides. Panic threatened to choke him. But he pushed it downward. He'd break down in his ulaq later.

The growl though. Alaric returned it. This was a spar not a true fight. And it be important the other man know it. He better not be this rough with Tiuttuk. Alaric would kill the man.

Alaric stood and shook his pelt. I know I am. A small glare. He wanted to remind the man it was a spar. He got to overtaken. But he said nothing at the moment. Taking stock of his body.

Alaric noddedThanks for building it.

Then he'd twitch his tail and leave if nothing more needed said. His insides felt shaky.

RE: ego death - Glaûkos - April 17, 2025

They did not discuss the match.

Glaukos was not sure what he expected, but to see Alaric retreating so hastily was another surprise. He should not have been startled by this, though, as both Alaric and Tiuttuk had admitted to the mountain people being healers, not warriors. He would not hold that as a black mark against him.

In time he might come to understand the usefulness of these spars.

Glaukos' own adrenaline was spiked, so he would go and find something else to accomplish and alleviate it—first crossing to the other side of the clearing opposite where Alaric had gone, and seeking one of the many paths. A patrol would do.
