long ways from northern promise - Other Shore - April 16, 2025 continuing on from this thread! just a travel post for reference
<3 Other Shore dared not shake Ghenaya silent when she cried, but heavens above, Ghenaya cried a lot. A few times along the way, she rested and tried her best to calm the pup a little, with varying degrees of success. Sometimes, Ghenaya whined until Other Shore was ready to start whining with her, but if she was lucky enough on occassion, the child's fussing ceased quickly. Poor thing. Having been tossed and battered about by the fight, Ghenaya had every reason to thrash and scream about, and any attempt to at least attend to her wounds and bruises was met with a surprisingly amount of fury from the pup. But it would certainly do Other Shore a few favors if the little one could simply pause her wailing for a bit. Was Other Shore like this when she was younger? She hoped not; she dared not to imagine the headaches her mother would have gone through if that had been the case. She kept moving. Lengthy rest was not a luxury she could afford now. She strayed away from the scent trail a little, knowing which way it headed, but also knowing that returning to the plains might allow Saatsine pursuers to find her and steal Ghenaya again. Keeping a distance from the trail would throw off any pursuers or at least give them a little headache. She kept treading, slowly, sometimes quickly if she thought the scent became stronger. Only now did she realize that in her attempt to head "west" during her skirmish with the woman, she had really been heading in some completely random direction. The ravine was embarrassingly further than she imagined - she really had believed that she was in the north and not so far towards the west. She had long since abandoned her attempts to locate Winsook, or even the ocean. Only the scent trail, now distant, remained to guide her. Around a marsh; past budding mountains; then into a warm forest whose gentler foliage seemed to act more welcoming to visitors. She stopped counting days, and wondered if her fight with Ghenaya's would-be thief had been just yesterday or a week ago. Her legs were ready to crumble from prolonged travel, but she refused to let herself stop for too long. She made promises to Ghenaya she was unsure she could keep. Her head spun with an exhaustion only matched by her collapse back at Qeya, and she slowly realized she would fall again. Was she even going in the right - She collapsed. She could walk no longer. Trying her best to keep Ghenaya close to her, she curled up on the unwelcome ground and fell victim to sleep. ***
She woke before she realized she had ever succumbed to exhaustion. Legs still strained, muscles still screaming, she picked herself and Ghenaya up and kept following the trail with the pup. She was surprised that Ghenaya did not managed to get herself stuck in some nook or ravine overnight, but was nonetheless grateful that the pup at least had enough survival instincts to prevent herself from getting run over by some passing creature. At the very least, her head was clear enough to prevent that from happening.
She could not tell if it was the right trail; if it was not, she told herself, she would first sit down and cry for a while, then probably go throw herself at the mercy of Winsook or something. But that was not a brilliant option, either - Saatsine, or what remained of it, could probably track her across infinite plains if they realized Winsook had any idea of where she was.
Ghenaya was a little less fussy than yesterday, or the night before, or whatever time Other Shore fell asleep. At the very least, Other Shore did not feel the urge to scream back in the cuddly idiot's face when she whined. Perhaps she was becoming accustomed to the child's wails, or maybe Ghenaya was just a little more merciful now.
Over hills now, a little bit kinder than -
Wait. She turned around. She did not recall going up those slopes behind her. Here she was now, at a gentle incline that she failed to remember ever reaching.
She paused. Had her exhaustion fractured her memory that much? Even when she collapsed back at Qeya River, she could at least keep track of time and location; these endless hours of traveling had apparently taken a visible toll on her.
Nevermind that. She gazed out at the scenery laid before her. A blanket of welcoming trees tucked next to a tall, foreboding peak... she blinked. The Winsook mountain? Had she... been here before?
Ah. She had.
Suddenly, with a renewed vigor, she picked up her pace as she gradually made her way towards the forest. She knew! She knew where this was; she had been here before, she had glimpsed what was beyond before. She did not need to ask any others for guidance now.
She returned to the scent trail, and for a moment there, she thought she could feel the brush of Morwenna's paw against her cheek again.
continuing this here! :3
