I never walk about after dark - Seraphine - April 23, 2025

Suddenly, things were different.

Home was no longer a muddy cave. The tension which she did not understand but very well felt no longer hung over her or her family. She found herself able to walk; she always could, but now the girl felt that she could go somewhere.

The onset of spring made the world brighter. Sat in a patch of grass, the girl took in the sun and let the heat rest comfortably on her light fur.

Things were different, but they were good.

having his mother and packmates back would have sparked joy, regardless. for them to come with his siblings in tow made him happier than he could imagine.

of course, it was tempered by the fact that chani was, in all likelihood, dead, and that chacal had lost her brood.

but seeing the pale girl with that ginger stripe—a marker of their shared heritage—filled his heart and soul.

hi, ti pitit, lafayette said softly, padding closer. he gave her space, in case she was shy. but he smiled down upon her, tilting his head slightly. i t'ink we 'ave not met properly. i'm lafayette—i'm your brot'er.

Breaking through her thoughts, a familiar stranger approached. She was coy momentarily, lightening upon his introduction as her brother.

Maman calls me Séraphine. She spoke, a special emphasis on her own name. She loved the way it sounded rolling off her tongue. Sera did not speak much in the cave, she did not feel she was supposed to, but she had always liked the sound of her own name.

A smile crossing her face, she closed the space between them and lifted her head so that if he wished, they could touch noses as a proper greeting. She had known of other siblings, but this was her first speaking to them - except littermates, of course. It was exciting.

a beautiful name, chosen by his beautiful mother. he smiled even broader to hear it, seaglass eyes sparkling with delight. hello, seraphine, he replied. i am so glad you are home now.

he sat down beside her, also enjoying the sun on his shoulders and the soft breeze that stirred his pelt.

dis be sapphique, lafayette said, gesturing with his chin in a semi-circle, gazing at the land around them. our family 'as called it home for many seasons—i'm sure manman 'as told you much about it.

perhaps. perhaps not. what had mireille spoken, in that dark, awful place? surely she would have tried to bring some light into her newborn children's lives.

She smiled up at him as he spoke, sitting back down beside him. He looked so different from her! Like a reverse of her own pale coat.

No, maman do not be talking much. She didn't think so, at least. It be much prettier than de cave, though. Then again, a pile of rabbit droppings could be prettier than that muddy place.

But looking out upon the cliffs, they were much more beautiful than anything Seraphine had seen before. It truly did feel like home.

Small head turning, she looked back to Lafayette now. When did you get to come home, Laf-ay-ette? She asked, breaking down his name as it was spoken. In her mind it made sense that if she had been born off of the cliffs, maybe others had been away too.

manman do not be talkin' much. that wasn't like mireille, and it was clear that seraphine's birth in captivity had been much different from his own upbringing. that was made even more obvious when the girl spoke again, asking him a question that took him more than slightly aback.

i— lafayette paused, trying to puzzle out how to reply. i been home, ti sè, he went on. i was born here. an' i know you weren't, seraphine, but dis be your home as much as mine.

one day, he'd tell her about the circumstances of her entrance into the world. for now, he'd keep it vague, and segue into more age-appropriate topics.

lafayette smiled. anyway, our grandmot'ers erzulie an' rosalyn settled here long ago, he explained. dey 'ad many children, including our manman, and tante chacal. dey created somet'ing very special here—an' we carry deir legacy onward.

So he had never left. How unfair! What did she do to deserve that nasty cave? She grimaced for a moment while considering this rather seriously, however her brother pulled her from this with something far more interesting.

What be a legacy? She asked, her tail thumping against the ground. She liked that word - it had a nice roll off of her tongue, not like her name did, but still quite pleasant!

what be a legacy?

he contemplated her question for a moment before responding. he knew the meaning of the word, of course, but he wanted to connect it as best he could to the greater picture—to the women (and men) who had come before seraphine.

a legacy is what we leave behind, lafayette explained. family, history. t'ings dat will outlive us.

a half-smile graced his muzzle. my papa val died—ah, passed from dis eart', some moons ago, he went on, hastily amending the way he told the story. but he lives on de stories we tell of 'im, and of de t'ings he did to see sapphique thrive.

RE: I never walk about after dark - Seraphine - May 09, 2025

So that was a legacy. Seraphine wondered if that meant she had one too.

Tell me about papa Val d'en. She decided. Sera did not quite understand what it meant for him to have passed from the earth, but nonetheless she was always in the mood for a story. I want to know his legacy.

Her eyes seemed to sparkle as she said the word. Safe to say it was on the way to becoming an integral part of her small vocabulary.

his smile grew wider at her request, even though a wistful expression touched his gaze. it should be val himself, imparting his knowledge onto the next generation.

but he'd try to do his papa proud.

he was kind, an' friendly, lafayette explained. fur black as night, wi' eyes green as de trees. he was raised by our granmès, erzulie an' rosalyn, but 'is birth mot'er's name was raleska. he lived here all 'is life—an' was loyal 'til de end.

and he missed the man with an ache that transcended feeling. was val watching, now? had he joined the stars?

he would much like you, ti sè, he told seraphine warmly. i wish you could've met 'im.

RE: I never walk about after dark - Seraphine - May 31, 2025

Dark-furred, kind, and a loyal man. Seraphine could see that sort of wolf in Lafayette, he was sweet too.

I'll meet 'im when he comes 'ome. She was quick to decide. Or maybe I'll be going to him first. Grinning to Lafayette, she meant to imply a grand adventure.

Maman would be wanting her to come home soon, probably. It was time to say goodbye. Hopping to her feet, her tail flagged a sort of wave to her brother. Bye-bye Lafayette, tell me more about papa Val later okay? Skipping away, there was much more for her to think about now.

RE: I never walk about after dark - Lafayette - June 03, 2025

i hope not, thought lafayette, smiling sadly at her words. better to let her live in ignorance for now; they could always explain later. and maybe val's spirit would even see fit to see seraphine in her dreams.

i will, ti sè, he murmured. bye-bye.

exhausted, he padded back to his own sleeping-place, still smiling. things would go completely belly-up soon—but at least this was something he could savor.
