It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 26, 2025

She had waited all night and all day, but maman still had not come back.

Someone who was gone was supposed to come back.

Seraphine did not find that it would be anything but embarrassing to scream and cry, so instead, stood in the sand, she began to dig with a blank-faced determination. There was no reason, no purpose, she just found that she liked how the grains felt on her paws, the way it grew damp as she dug deeper.

Glancing behind her, she found that wet sand stuck together in clumps. The discovery pulled her from the hole she had dug, leading her to begin lightly pushing and pounding the sand into a pile. It was ugly, no piece of art that was for certain, but she wanted to make it bigger. Grander.

Eyeing sticks fallen from a nearby tree, she was quick to move towards them and pick up as many of the smaller one's as she could. Far from neatly, she stuck each into the pile of wet sand one by one.

Staring upon her sand structure, one thing was missing. She wanted a shell.

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - April 26, 2025

with maman gone, sobeille did not let a sibling out of sight. between her and lafayette and shadess, they watched as hawks watch mice in golden cornfields. she spoke nothing of the new scent purling from her, nor of what she experienced in the sound.

today she was on seraphine duty, and so followed at a distance as the girl played.

had she ever been so frolicsome?

an impulse to dash at the small clump stole over her, but sobeille steadied her raised limb and instead contributed to the growing pile. as seraphine came back with twigs, sobeille watched over it. when she caught the girl staring, she asked what be wrong?

RE: It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 26, 2025

Her ears twitched at the sound of her sister's question. A shell. She responded. It be needing a shell.

Right now it was just a brown pile with some sticks. A shell would make it much prettier.

Turning her head, Seraphine searched the sands for something suitable sticking out. She wanted something eye catching. 'elp me pick one. Four eyes would be better than two.

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - April 27, 2025

a shell.

the memory of her maman caused the smile on sobeille's face to fragment and wither away.

a shell.

she rose and turned away so seraphine would not see the shadow that sundered her face. over 'ere. it be low tide, i'm sure we can fin' some'ting.

bringing seraphine to the tidal flats, sobeille scanned the thin ribbons of kelp and the sea-studded pools. stopping short and remembering her own first scrape with the sea, sobeille raised a paw to stop seraphine.

seraphine, i be bringin' you to dis place, but you must promise me dat you will never touch de water wit'out me or an adult presen'. de sea is strong, and takes little girls at 'igh tide if dey are not careful.

RE: It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 27, 2025

She trotted after her sister, stopping so promptly that she slid when the paw was held up. She eyes the water as the warning words are spoken, the way the further out blue sloshes over itself. Yes, Sobeille. I will stay close. She promises, looking back to the wet sand.

Spotting a shell sticking out, she hesitates for a moment before weaving around her sister to bound towards it. Paws clawing and digging, she aimed to unearth it. This one was rather large - half of a clam shell it seemed.

Enough of her treasure uncovered, the little girl clamped with her teeth and tugged; it came loose, the momentum sending her back onto her bum.

Turning her head back to Sobeille, she waited with a smile. What did she think?

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - April 27, 2025

for both their sake, sobeille hoped seraphine's promise remains true.

around them the hum of the sea reminded sobeille of sirens and their songs; she followed seraphine's gaze to the blue beyond and a longing filled her so deeply that for a second, her heart sank.

jolted back to the present by seraphine hesitating and then pivoting around her, sobeille followed in a leisurely pace. wedged between the sand was what looked like half a clam-shell -- the effort it took to extract it sending seraphine nearly hind over tea kettle.

a much needed laugh then, for the girl whose little life had already seen so much trouble. good work, seraphine. sobeille clucked, searching for her own shell to add to the pile.

RE: It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 27, 2025

She was satisfied with her sister's approval taking the shell to place it upon the pile of sand. Do you t'ink maman will want to see w'en she comes 'ome? Because she was coming back, and when she did she would want to see the beautiful work her baby had done.

She turned her head now, waiting for the answer of her older sibling. Surely she would know when their maman planned to return home.

Her only worry was that these shells may be prettier than the one that she had left for her in the dirt. That one was special.

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - April 27, 2025

knowing someone isn't coming back doesn't stop it from hurting.

sobeille shifted, pausing from her search of the shell. which should she do?

which would her maman do?

many things sobeille was, but a liar wasn't one of them. she sighed and rose, bringing her own shell -- a fractured piece of a red reminding her of her maman.

seraphine, sobeille lowered herself to the girl's level, holding the mismatch of her gaze. how could she break the news to a little girl? she could barely speak the truth of it herself without choking. maman isn't coming back. but she loves you very deeply, an' will watch over you as long as you be breathin'.

we all will.

when you look at de sea, know dat it 'olds some part of 'er in its blue waves. an' when you be lookin' at yourself, know dat she is wit' you still, always.

RE: It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 27, 2025

That didn't make sense. If she loved her, then why would she choose not to return to them?

But she saw no reason that Sobeille would lie. When she grew older, maybe she would learn to understand.

With a nod she returned her attention to the sand structure, using a paw to push in her shell properly - ensuring it would not fall. She seemed to be ready to move on from the unfurtunate topic entirely.

Sobeille, She eyed her sister, the sea behind them. W'en my legs be growing stronger, will you teach me to swim?

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - April 28, 2025

truthfully, the emerald didn’t know what to expect. she had never had to explain this to anyone. her first brush with death had been with the coyote cub she played with; being bigger and stronger, she hadn’t known dragging her by her neck would kill her and not bring her back.

she hadn’t known.

but seraphine didn’t argue. she simply accepted it, though sobeille suspected she saw some misgiving flicker in her mismatched gaze.

she was relieved by the change of topic, but that was how children were. they flit like little grasshoppers from one thing to the next. yes, when de time is right, you an’ i will go swimming. i’ll even teach you ‘ow to ‘unt. doesn’t that sound nice, seraphine?

RE: It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 28, 2025

Sobeille agreed, and Seraphine smiled. Yes, an' we hunt. She agreed. Pouncing on leaves and flowers was already fun, so surely hunting proper prey would not be so different. You be my favourite sister, Sobeille. She followed this with a giggled, sitting down so she could stare up at their creation.

She knew that one day she would understand, but there was no reason to grow quickly. One day when she was older she would understand, and one day Sobeille would no longer be her favourite because she would know that she was the sister to tell Seraphine that maman was truly gone.

But life moved on. It waited for no one, not even Seraphine, and not even their maman.

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - April 30, 2025

i better be, sobeille rejoined playfully, following suit and sitting next to seraphine. it would surprise nobody to learn sobeille had an inflated sense of her own worth: it wasn't that others were unworthy, it was simply that she was something else.

you know what dis be needin? sobeille suddenly prompted, getting up and striding towards the sand-mound. a moat.

with scrapes of her paws, sobeille started digging a rough circle around the castle, listening as the sea began to rush into the mild depressions made by her raking claws.

RE: It's my point of view - Seraphine - April 30, 2025

Seraphine responded with a light giggle, happy to watch as the water flowed into the dips. A little white paw reached out to touch, quickly retracting at the wet feeling.

A perfect moment, baking in the sun. Nothing could ruin it, not even a pinching crab or a swooping bird.

Would you like to fade here?

RE: It's my point of view - Sobeille - May 04, 2025

yes <3

a broad beam of sunlight fell down upon seraphine. for a moment, sobeille was taken aback by the halo of golden thread illuminating every blade of pale fur.

beautiful, this hour -- and this life -- though as of late it'd been tinged with much grief.

sobeille vowed not to forget this moment. the soft laughter of her sister. they'd endured tremendous suffering, but not even that could blot out the innocence of a child playing on the beach.
