the shepherd - Forsythia - April 27, 2025

what is this place?

on the breeze is things in bloom, fresh earth churned by spring rainfall. rich scents accented with the undertones of someone living.

she is not shy nor kept at bay by the knowledge of these things. it is a wordless voice that she raised to the breeze now. she willed it to carry her melodic call to listening ears.

she could not know if it did.

The sound of a howl brought Waawaashkeshi to her borders. Not many were so polite.

Slowed by her pregnancy, she was glad to see that her guest was still waiting when she arrived. What brings you to the copse, my friend? She smiles upon the stranger, tail waving behind her.

The copse had a way of pulling wolves of the same spirit together. She had to hope that was the case today.

friend.

a young woman knew better than to question this warmth. hold it, nurture it, cherish it. she had been taught the lessons of survival and of the sharpness the world wielded.

it did not mean she needed to create more of it in moments of paranoia and worry.

more importantly, this woman was carrying life. the signs were obvious but forsythia had seen how spring could turn the bodies of those seasons beyond her. she’d be no good medic or nature-tender if she had remained oblivious to it all.

its beauty, its bounty. ripples of youthful awe in her voice that reflected in the shine of her eyes as well. no longer so sad, so terribly hardened by loss. do you make a home here?

Her smile was wide at the young girl's response. She had felt the same way upon finding the copse - she still felt that way now.

Yes, we here are the Summerwalkers. A pack of storytellers, and traders too in the summer months. She responded, a hint of pride in her tone. If the copse calls to you, then it is as much yours as it is mine. To deny such a fact would be denying nature itself.

Letting out a breath, she decided to sit while they spoke. Are you a wanderer? She had to assume so. This one did not smell strongly of other strangers.

storytellers and traders.

laughter filled the back of her throat like a blissful honey. she recalled trading at the hunt, being too nervous to join parties that would drop great beasts but more than willing to swap this for that.

seal bones. she wished for more and she remembered those coastal hunters with warmth in her.

only this was no coast.

i only wander to learn, to watch and to trade. she had no joy in the simple act of wayward walking anymore. too many of her youngest days had been spent in motion.

you do not know my name, though! chirped like a proper spring bird. still you offer the copse to me in sharing. it was rather good that she was not the nefarious sort, no? perhaps she ought to stay here to be watchful for those.

The response made Waawaashkeshi laugh. I could see it in your eyes - you are trustworthy. She affirmed with a smile that beamed pure confidence in her words.

But alright, let's exchange names. She decided. I am Waawaashkeshi, Storyleader of the Summerwalkers.

Glancing back the way she came for only a short moment, she wondered if any of the others were nearby. If the girl did not plan to stay, she hoped that some of them may get to meet her before she left.

her eyes?

suddenly aware that she might never see them herself. not truly, not how everyone else would see them. she could not know how they might have gave away her intentions or emotions in every interaction.

the titles were a welcomed distraction. even if they sounded like something she might have heard of growing up. sun and stories.

she was a golden girl who could never escape the past entirely it seemed.

forsythia, plain and simple. no titles of her own. what does a storyleader do?

I'll admit it's a poor translation to common, She chuckled, as though a bit flustered by this fact, but the explanation is simple nonetheless. What an 'alpha' in another pack does, I do too. I work with my pack members to lead them through the year. She attempted her best explanation, a smile on her face. Along with leading ceremonies and story circles, of course.

Have you had something similar, Forsythia? She asked, curious of the world which the younger girl may have come from. Outside of Nasamiituuq's moon village and her meeting with Cambria, Waawaashkeshi knew little of the Teekons packs. Then again, maybe this girl had never bee part of one at all.

RE: the shepherd - Forsythia - April 30, 2025

what things were in store for her here?

a whole new world, peppered with some small familiar things. it would make the transition period easier and it would soften the lonely aches she had started to feel.

i’ve seen a lot. she confessed with a timid wave of a tail. yet she did not think she knew something exactly like this. hardly any two things would ever be the same.

you said a poor translation…what is it in another language? focus on the future and all the learning she could do here.

Then you must have many stories to share! She responded with a grin. In her lifetime, Waawaashkeshi had found that the best stories were based at least somewhat on personal experiences.

When asked the orgin of her role's name, she took a moment to recall the correct words. Dibaajimaawi. She responded after a moment. That is what the Summerwalkers I came from called it. Though knowing how the wolves here struggled just to say her name, she had translated with the hopes of making the pack less intimidating. She did however plan to teach her children the original terms.

I think I will begin back towards the territories center. Would you like to come along? An invitation complete with a kind smile.
