little devils - Leonore - April 28, 2025

It seemed to her that the sky had been clouded over for days now, but this morning a single ray of sun had shone through into the cave.
She had considered taking the puppies out to play, maybe teaching them to swim, but instead she found herself coming up from the sound with the hopes of visiting her auntie @Sobeille. She knew there were others - her family, and the thought put the smallest of smiles on her face.
Stopping where she thought appropriate, Leonore lifted her head to howl.
She hoped Marina would be alright on her own for a short while - she intended for her visit to be quick. If all went well maybe next time - if there was a next time - she would bring a couple puppies with her, take some of the pressure off.

leonore's howl floated above a sky grim with greyness. sobeille drifted towards her, lacking her typical aplomb. much was on the emerald's mind.
too much.
it pleases me to see your face,sobeille sniffed at her niece's fur, sampling the scents there and confirming all at the sound was in good order.
an idea came to her.
i 'ave been t'inking it be time to visit de sound. would you like to go on a patrol wit' auntie sobeille?

She smiled as Sobeille approached, her tail waving behind her.
Hi auntie.
An offer of a patrol - how convenient! Now she wouldn't have to worry about the puppies.
I'll go with you. Was there anything you wanted to check?She had been doing smaller patrols of her own, mostly only around the den. With little one's running around it helped to make sure that nothing was too close for comfort.

still sore from her fight in the sound, sobeille stretched her aching limbs. a knowing smile glinted in her gaze at her niece's question. how perceptive!
as a matter of fact, yes. come, i be showin' you somet'ing you will never forget.sobeille nudged at grey ruff, letting @Shadess know she and their niece intended to prowl the beach below.
now, tell me what you be knowin' about patrollin'.

She was quite pleased with her own correct assumption, all too happy to trot after her auntie.
I don't know much yet. Nobody got to teach me.She responded. Though, how difficult could it be? Nobody had ate the babies yet.
I walk around the cave, smell for anything strange, and chase away the birds.Especially the birds. They had been swooping at the young one's a few too many times.
She had to wonder what Sobeille wanted to show her. Not having grown up with her Sapphique relatives, she knew there was much to be curious about.

as they wound down the cliffside, sobeille took care to match the pace of leonore's growing limbs.
i be teachin' you, girlsobeille growled playfully, swinging a paw at leonore's haunch before she paused abruptly at spring-grass growing between the cliffs.
smell dat?she motioned towards the faded scent, letting leonore's inquisitive mauve nose inspect the patch before she squatted.
our scent 'as faded. no wonder de raiders came an' stole 'alf us away.sobeille pantomimed and then scrapped the dirt with her hind paws.
pop a squat, like dis.
an' den do dis, send dat mud flyin' back so everyone be knowin' dis is girl's turf only. now -- tell me more about de birds you be seein'.

She giggled as the paw was swatted at her, playfully nipping at it
Have they come home yet?She asked at the mention of the raid, recalling their previous conversation. She hoped so, and she hoped everyone was alright - Leonore had hoped to be able to meet her grandmaman one day.
She had intended to continue, but was caught off-guard by the sudden popping-of-the-squat.
Really..? But it's so..she copied nonetheless, and was quick to see the effectiveness of the method. She did not finish her complaint.
They're the big gulls.She said, tilting her head up to the sky with a glare.
Not big enough to take off with a puppy, but they keep swooping at them when we go out. I don't know why, but it's only the little babes.Except Lilimar, but that was more for the fact that the little freak didn't often go out if they saw the birds, watching instead.

yes. some.she continued to scrape her scent along the dirt, leaving rich tufts of auburn fur in snagging branches. leonore did the same, and sobeille sniffed at the pile marked by her in approval.
as the girl's complaint drifted off mid-sentence, sobeille grinned, plucking a stick from a nearby bush and carrying it for several strides. she worked the bark in her teeth and then dropped the stick at a patch of tussock grass. scraping her pawpads in the ground here, she mentioned for leonore to do the same.
dese gulls, you must not be trustin' dem. dey will carry a puppy off if they get close enough.sobeille made note to tell shadess and lafayette of this.
when you see dem circling, you tell de puppies to take cover, an' you must protect dem. bark, lunge, and grab dem if you can. dey are fast, but dey are cowards. dey will not fight if the meal isn't easy.

She follows Sobeille's instructions, stumbling here and there as she attempts to keep up with the conversation at the same time.
Really? Are the puppies not too heavy for them?She supposed she couldn't be sure until one of the gulls did try to take one, and that was a point she would prefer not to get to. Frowning at the sandy ground, she knew that either which way she would take Sobeille's advice. Chase them away like her own life depended on it - and maybe it would, if Marine revealed a vengeful spirit.
Maybe when I take care of the gulls, you could bring some of Sapphique's puppies to visit.She suggested lightly, eyeing Sobeille.
Marina's babies are lonely out here. I think they need to meet someone who is not their littermate.She feared that their social skills would not develop further otherwise. Leonore had grown up in a good sized pack with other litters and packmates to play with her, keeping her well-rounded. Sure, she had an attitude, but she had never tried to eat a coyote. The Sound did not have enough company to completely keep all four babes in check.

why risk finding out?sobeille grinned, scratching tufts of auburn fur against the coarse edge of granite. their scents here would tell all this place was heavily patrolled - and she hoped leonore would gain some knowledge -- and comfort -- from this.
you be a smart girl, leonore, and smart girls be makin' good leaders. i tell you dis --lowering herself so that her gaze was level with leonore's, sobeille sniffed at the brine and continued.
you keep watchin' for gulls, and when everyone is able, i will be bringin' de puppies to de sound so dey can get to know deire cousins. deal?

She smiled at her auntie as she spoke, some pride swelling in her chest at the words.

But what was it that you wanted to show me?She had only grown increasingly curious as the patrol went on. It was hard not to be.
Lifting her head, she looked in to breathe in the scents on the wind - but after a particularly strong gust she found herself coughing on sand instead. Gross.

the matter settled, sobeille gently steered them down the slope that lead out into the monolith forest. one ear turned back as leonore began to cough - patient — and a little bemused — sobeille halted until the girl recovered her breath.
dat.she pointed to a dark opening in the cliff’s face and wondered if leonore heard the gentle murmur of it beneath the sound of the sea. like all of her bloodline, the grotto called to her — somedays so loudly that the buzzing hum felt it might split her skull.
come.
she ducked beneath the black awning and disappeared into darkness.

They soon came to an opening, Leonore staring with wide eyes.
A quiet hum lured her forward, the barracuda following at her auntie's flank. She said nothing for now, only waiting to see what sort of things were within. It felt like some sort of secret, held for her all this time. She wondered if her maman knew about it, too. At the thought she nearly winced.
Good god, did her heart ached for her family at the creek.

unaware of the wave of homesickness overcoming leonore, sobeille plunged into the darkness.
the tunnel sloped downwards, an abrupt stop announcing its transition from tunnel into chamber. sobeille briefly measured leonore against the drop, remembering she’d been stuck here at a similar age.
jumping down from the mantle, sobeille turned with a wide grin. the cavern was large and circular shaped — as if an amphitheater carved out by ancient hands. here and there flowstone columns rose from ceiling to floor, and very distantly, the opposite walls were washed in a faint blue glow.
de grotto.sobeille announced, wondering what leonore might make of it.

Making a careful hop off the drop, she joined Sobeille within the grotto.
She had never seen anything like this before. It was
Beautiful..
Mouth agape, she looked over the carved out section of earth in pure awe.
My maman - has she been here too?She asked rather suddenly, her head whipping to look back at her auntie. She had to wonder; it was an unimportant fact in the grand scheme of things, but for a Leonore who longed to connect with the woman once more?
It meant everything.

awe glinted in the child’s glittering eyes, looking like two far away planets teeming with life. sobeille smiled, gently guiding them towards the moonstone.
blue waves rippled at the quiet surface. sobeille had to think for a spell, realizing she had not ever seen suzu here. but much of sapphique visited these sacred grounds, and even her own maman had known the grotto’s power.
aye, i t’ink so. dis be an important place for sapphique.she strummed a paw along the surface, marveling the electric leaps of blue running outwards. she would never tire of the magic here.
it be where sapphique began.

Where it began?She repeated, urging Sobeille to offer an explanation.
She couldn't stop turning her head - there was just too much to look at. Leonore felt as though she could melt into the ground here, it just brought out a new and strange feeling.
Refocusing her attention on her aunt, she prepared herself to listen.

how does one perfectly describe an origin story? she tried her best to channel val, remembering how carefully he'd told this story. sobeille's heart warmed to see the interest in leonore's eyes -- eyes so very like and so very different than her maman's.
before dis place was known to sapphiquians, it was known to a witch.her muzzle wrinkled in the manner she'd seen her maman's do, unaware this was now a genetic legacy -- a facial memory passed from generation to generation.
dis witch knew de power of dis place, but she had no friends. our grandmamans -- two great women known as rosalyn and erzulie, discovered 'er and followed 'er to dis place. a place of great wealth and magic.here sobeille paused, measuring the captivity of her single audience.
but ...
a terrible shadow watched de three women, jealousy in its 'eart.
onward the story went, until sobeille was tired of speaking and leonore tired of questions. guiding the child home, sobeille marveled of the ancient secrets in this place.
some day, it would all be hers.
