again, a place to fall - A'yan - May 04, 2025 @Sunchaser or @Waawaashkeshi, probably the former <3
Staring. Little specks - Away they went, away they came, away they went. A past reached her again. A tune found her ears... "Wa-ha-ha, ahhh, wa-ha-ha-ahh The smiles on everyone's faces" A whimsical melody it was, a song she had heard sung and echoed many countless times in Halfshatter. Many more times had she carried this tune across hills and valleys and tundras to where she was now. Simple, perhaps childish. She blinked, and the speck was gone. There, she turned to the wind now, and felt it drift gently over the tips of her fur and tease the edges of her ears. The copse... a soft place indeed. RE: again, a place to fall - Sunchaser - May 04, 2025 Sunchaser hoped for a successful hunt this morning. Spring was in the air, and he knew that prey would be plentiful. Walking through the copse's pollinated space he spotted a stranger; though with such a joyous demeanour he was sure she had to be one of Waawaashkeshi's recruits. ..Good morning. He spoke as he approached, coy as ever. He had not quite been a member of a pack in his short life - not until now. It was strange to be able to walk up to another and speak to them so easily. But nonetheless, two sets of claws and teeth could catch something far better than he could on his own. RE: again, a place to fall - A'yan - May 04, 2025 A twist in the copse. A man walked in - a cloak of red over his back, eyes of gentle amber. The early dawn of youth still gleamed in him. Another story-singer...? Had she seen him before...? No, no, she had not. An unfamiliar shyness was there in his face. But there seemed to be a knowing, a string that told them they both walked the same path. "Good morning" - a common greeting around these parts, it seemed. The morning is fine, indeed, she replied. Was that the correct reply? She could not tell - but if it was not, then it could simply be woven into another song. What did the copse tell you today?she asked. It did not matter what rumors he heard in the grass and trees. She simply wanted to know what kind of tune he sung. RE: again, a place to fall - Sunchaser - May 04, 2025 It felt to him that she spoke in riddles. Sunchaser was not quite that clever. It's told me to hunt.He had to assume this was the correct answer, or something along those lines. Are you of the Summerwalkers, too?He asked, his voice hushed as though it were a secret between the two of them. The scents on the wind told him that deer lingered nearby - a doe and a fawn. He was unsure how long they would remain in place. RE: again, a place to fall - A'yan - May 04, 2025 Hunt?A chuckle. What does the copse crave? She paused at his next question. Summerwa- yes. The woman named Waawaashkeshi found you too?The storyleader's promise had been fulfilled, it seemed. Other singers of their kind wandered here in the copse. She is quick to find joy-dwellers, it seems. Perhaps this boy sang of the hunt? A'yan was not adept at hunting by any means, but she had kept herself alive this long, and had learned a thing or two along the way. She could not quite tell if he wished to hunt, but at the very least, if he invited her to do so, her frame was small enough to not impede his efforts. Then came a wind bearing plentiful scents. The hunter-singer seemed to notice it before A'yan herself did. Ah. Is this what the copse is hungry for this morning? She turned to him. Do you intend to chase that savory wind? RE: again, a place to fall - Sunchaser - May 04, 2025 He was quick to nod. She's a kind woman. It was hard not to want to stay. But as convincing as Waawaashkeshi was, it seemed to him that this woman too was cut from the very mold of what he knew a Summerwalker to be. She was surely destiny-bound to end up here in the copse. The fawn, yes.He responded. Will you join me?It felt cruel to kill the child and leave the mother, but Sunchaser understood; with a small hunting part they could only kill one of the two, and while the mother would surely grieve the fawn would die without her nonetheless. Or maybe he was looking too far into it. He could not know if deer felt things on the same level they did; it was the cruel cycle of life. RE: again, a place to fall - A'yan - May 04, 2025 A fawn? Hmm.A swish of her tail marked her thoughts. I have nothing better to do. I will come. There seemed to be much deliberation in the face of the hunter-singer. Perhaps about the fact that there were only two of them to hunt? Or how many the fawn could feed? Or... Spill your thoughts, she gently coaxed. Where would you like to begin? Be my guide, if you will - I am not an adept hunter. A'yan took another whiff of the wind and noticed the scent of the fawn and the doe. Previously, she had only smelled the prey, but had not the distinguished the two. Impressive for the red-furred boy to know to tell the two apart. You have a sharp sense for prey, she remarked. You sing of hunt? Who taught you? RE: again, a place to fall - Sunchaser - May 04, 2025 Checking the direction of the wind, he soon begun towards the scent. ..As long as we stay down wind, we should be fine for a while. He responded. The fawn won't be difficult to take, but the doe will fight us on it.What sort of mother wouldn't? But he knew that she would run once her fawn was dead - there was nothing left for her to defend but her own life at that point. ..I'm not really all that good.He admitted. I've been on my own for a long while, so I had to learn.Maybe he just had a good nose, or a natural aptitude. How could he know? You can't be too bad at hunting though. She looked well fed, but for all he knew she could have somebody accompanying her. He could see the ungulates now, far ahead grazing in some berry bushes. RE: again, a place to fall - A'yan - May 05, 2025 A'yan stepped, gently, towards the pair. It did not hurt her to see that she would aid in the death of at least one of the two - such was life. They would meet again, the shatterkin had told her. All would meet again. Hmm. I see.A'yan had seen brilliant hunters who had the audacity to claim that their skill was weak. But a failed hunt would not hurt her. I am like you, then. Not great. But alive. She saw that his gaze found the distant doe and fawn, blissfully unaware. A'yan traced what she could of a path to slip towards the prey - stealth was not natural to her, so perhaps it was not the best method...? How do you suppose we approach this?she asked. Surround and attack? Or one chases and drives fawn towards the other?Common hunting techniques, ones that she could easily roll off her head, came upon her tongue now. Typically she had little strategy. But perhaps the hunter-singer might appreciate a little planning, more than she did. RE: again, a place to fall - Sunchaser - May 05, 2025 The woman asked him for a plan, and analysing the situation he was quick to decide. I'll seperate the two, if you can catch the fawn.He decided. He would ensure that the doe did not reach his companion in time. Ah - but before we do anything, what's your name?He had nearly forgotten to ask. Mine is Sunchaser. Admittedly, it felt good to hunt with another. He hadn't had the chance since.. Well, he didn't want to focus on the past. His eyes were fixed to the future, and it looked mouth-watering. RE: again, a place to fall - A'yan - May 11, 2025 would you like to roll for hunting outcomes? :D
Hmm. Alright. She was unsure of her confidence in her ability to take down the fawn - but an attempt would not hurt her. Sunchaser... lovely name for hunter-singer. You can call me A'yan. No titles this time. The hunter-singer seemed to have a mind for the things in life that ensured survival, and so she maintained that simplicity. She would not bore him with stories of her old name. I will approach the two,she decided. But I will not get too close. Hide somewhere, perhaps? Then chase and take down the fawn when it begins to flee.A decent plan, she decided. Her speed was not terrible. A'yan turned back to the hunter-singer. Need a moment more to think? Or shall we hunt? RE: again, a place to fall - Sunchaser - May 16, 2025 Sounds good to me!
They were in agreement then. He nodded, signalling for her to move forward with a jut of his muzzle. Good luck, A'yan. Moving away from her, he remained in the cover of the foliage and positioned himself to lay in wait. The moment A'yan moved into their path, he would pounce and separate the mother from her fawn. |
