Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 08, 2025

Towhee picked at the dead bullfrog Bushtit had brought her earlier. She wasn’t a big fan of the texture and it didn’t help that she didn’t feel very hungry. Fighting a sigh, she plucked up the rubbery little corpse and dumped it in her stash at the back of the Hobbit Hole. She resisted the impulse to curl up in her bed beside it, instead slouching out of the den into the cool evening air.

There were plenty of good things in her life at present, though she couldn’t help but feel down after the past few days. First, she’d learned about Ruenna’s death. Then Kukutux’s. But worst of all had been her painfully brief interaction with Tiuttuk at Moonspear. It bothered her, the way she’d left without saying anything. She should’ve pursued her, though Towhee couldn’t stop thinking about the way Treepie had looked at her in that final second before turning away.

She tried to push it from her mind as she climbed down toward the caldera. It would be fully dark in a matter of minutes, the dusky light slowly leeching the world of color. Spring peepers sang all around her, though Towhee couldn’t hear them. She did notice the fireflies winking here and there as she walked along the water’s edge. The sight of them even brought a small smile to her face, which was wiped away a moment later as she walked straight into a cloud—and a mouthful—of gnats.

He had made the choice to join the wolves of the caldera. He was yet to know if it was a step back or not.

The evenings were beginning to show the signs of oncoming summer months; humid temperatures, fireflies buzzing, and the ugly little junebugs beginning to appear here and there. He should have been able to appreciate it more, but he was still a bit bitter over the loss of Siena. The territory had always been beautiful this time of year.

Cynical as he was, Cinar found himself torn from his thoughts once more at the sight of an older woman choking on what seemed to be a cloud of bugs. It took everything in him not to chuckle.

Trotting towards her, he was careful to avoid the cloud himself. Are you alright?

She cringed backward, gagging and spitting. She thought about wiping her tongue with her paw, then remembered that the lake was right there. Towhee pivoted and bent over it, quickly lapping up some water, swishing it, then spitting it out again. She couldn’t count the number of tiny bodies that floated on the surface.

Towhee raised her head, meaning to shoot a hairy eyeball at the hovering cloud of gnats. But there was a dark wolf standing there. And despite the slight similarity in palette to Ridgeback, it wasn’t him. Towhee’s fur prickled as she realized she had no idea who this stranger was or if he was welcome here.

And who the fuck are you? she blurted before she could stop herself, his ninja moves easily riling the emotionally depleted Redhawk.

He couldn't but be taken off-guard by her response, but he kept a calm face.

Cinar. He responded. Killdeer brought me back a few days ago - unless I managed to stumble out of the caldera. He chuckled, tail waving behind him.

Keep calm, stay chill; that was his philosophy. He just had to hope that it would work here, should the old woman not find his youth alone to be a charming feature.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 09, 2025

The instant he said her grandson’s name, Towhee calmed considerably. Her fur flattened and the tension in her body uncoiled. She even shot him an apologetic grimace.

Sorry, I’ve had a rough few days, she explained, and I’m deaf, so I don’t like anyone sneaking up behind me. She paused. I’m Towhee, Killdeer’s grandmother.

This time, it was a mosquito that attacked her. Towhee didn’t hear its whine as it went straight for her ear, but she sure as shit felt it. She shook her head very suddenly and very hard. Her ears audibly flapped. She also darted a few feet, putting her on Cinar’s other side.

Fuckin’ bugs, man, she muttered, motioning him away from the lakeside. Let’s walk this way. Look at me if you say anything. I can read lips.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Cinar - May 10, 2025

Ah, so she was deaf. It's alright, it was my fault for approaching a stranger from behind. He spoke, his smile communicating a certain sincerity. Well met, Towhee.

The poor woman - it seemed like she was a magnet for those bugs. They had barely touched Cinar. He couldn't help but chuckle as she led him away from the water.

You said you've been having a hard time? He repeated, getting a good look at her now. Damn, she was pretty big; reflecting on his own thin form, nature truly did not make all wolves equally. If you would like to talk about it, I've been told I'm a good listener.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 11, 2025

She went about a hundred feet and then spun, orange eyes roving over Cinar and then past him. They could still see the lake from here and enjoy the view—well, until night fell properly—minus all the insects. Towhee settled onto her haunches, angling her face toward Cinar again so she wouldn’t miss anything he had to say.

Her head reared back slightly at his offer. He meant well, she was sure, but Towhee wasn’t about to unload her woes on a perfect stranger. She would much rather get to know the new recruit. She just hoped he would last longer than the last guy, whose name she’d already forgotten.

I’d rather hear about you, she said, shaking her head lightly. Starting with what brought you to the caldera.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Cinar - May 11, 2025

Put bluntly, what made Cinar a good listener was that he hated speaking of himself.

Oh, it was coincidence really. I met Killdeer while I was lounging next to a lake. He said, pausing to gesture towards the direction of Lake Rodney. I had nowhere else to be and he was quite convincing, so I returned with him. There was nothing more to it than that, not really.

For you I assume it's a family matter? It made sense. Cinar imagined that he too would want to be surrounded by loved one's in old age.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 12, 2025

Cinar gave her one of the most superficial answers she’d ever heard before turning the question back on her. Towhee gave him a little squint, though she did a mental handwave. She would circle back.

I was born here, roughly five billion years ago. So was Killer, much more recently. When he said he wanted to reclaim it, I came here to support him, yeah, she replied.

In this quiet, twilit moment after recently learning about two of her oldest friends passing, Towhee suddenly wondered if this was her last stop. Would she die here? Be buried here? She shook her head.

Refocusing on Cinar, she pressed, But where did you come from? Tell me three to five interesting facts about yourself.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Cinar - May 13, 2025

While the woman answered his question, it did not take her long to circle back to him.

Three or five facts. Alright, he could play that game.

Well.. let's see. I was born in a desert with six siblings; four sisters and two brothers, Both of my parents speak Turkish as do I, and I'm a horrible hunter. He snickered at his last offered fact, tail thumping behind him. I'm still young, not much has happened in my lifetime yet. I only left home a few months ago. That much was true; what had happened in the first two years of his life would be nothing in the grand scheme of things, should he live for as long as he hopes.

Now I am here. Your family has found a good spot, I want to help to build it up further.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 13, 2025

“Turkish?!” Towhee couldn’t help but mouth, having never heard of such a language. Could he speak to turkeys then? Aside from that, Cinar mentioned he was a terrible hunter—well, she could relate to that—who’d only somewhat recently dispersed from his natal pack. It sounded like he’d left on good or at least neutral terms, though she was more curious why he’d thrown in his lot with the Redhawks.

Can you talk to turkeys? she asked, despite knowing it was a ridiculous question. If you left home a few months ago but still suck at hunting, how did you survive all this time? Let me guess: the turkeys helped?

He was a little on the lanky side, though she wouldn’t call him thin. Towhee had once considered her skills supbar, though life on the road had demanded she get better or face starvation. She would consider herself a solid 6.5 out of 10 these days. Where would Cinar rate himself?

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Cinar - May 15, 2025

He could not help but laugh at her question, though he supposed it was a fair one. Maybe once, though I have not spoken to a turkey. What would a turkey say, anyways?

I hunt small game. Rodents still in their burrows, usually. It made him feel a bit too fox-like for his enjoyment, but it worked. Scavenging too, or hunting with others when I come across them. Though he supposed that now, in a pack, he would always have someone to hunt with. He hadn't decided if that was a good thing. I was not taught properly by my parents, my sense of smell is weak. I am better with.. softer tasks.

Do the wolves here hunt well? He asked. Maybe I will finally improve.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 19, 2025

It sounded like a matter of misrepresentation, though it seemed to Towhee like Cinar still considered himself a poor hunter. She clicked her tongue at him, though she waited for him to finish before speaking.

Sounds to me like you’re inexperienced, if anything. And being resourceful counts. It’s all about the spin, Cinar, she said. You’ll definitely improve here. It’s not just about skills, it’s about coordination. We work well together. I’m sure we can fold you right in, though learning our secret language will definitely give you a leg up too.

She paused there, giving Cinar a chance to absorb that and ask the inevitable questions. He would learn Ptero one way or another just by living here, though if he made the effort to become fluent, it wouldn’t just enhance his social life at the caldera. It really was a handy tool for group hunts as well.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Cinar - May 19, 2025

A secret language? He couldn't tell if that was a joke or not, so he smiled in response to it - a safe option. Secret language? He repeated, raising an eyebrow. Do tell me more.

He had never heard of a pack having a secret language, not in those exact words, but he could understand the benefits of it. Being able to communicate without an enemy catching on to what you were saying was a good tactic, so long as it was used properly - though he was not quite sure that was what Towhee meant.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 19, 2025

-“Maybe later,”- Towhee replied, one corner of her mouth twitching upward in the tiniest of cheeky smirks.

But it was getting properly dark now, which was not the right time to dive into learning a sign language. Towhee would rather try to teach him when she wasn’t in such a dumpy mood anyway. She wouldn’t be able to focus the way Cinar needed and deserved.

How are you at patrols? she asked. I’d like to do one before I call it a night. You’re welcome to join me.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Cinar - May 19, 2025

He could not help but be surprised by the motions that accompanied her following words - he did not yet understand the purpose of them.

I can patrol. He responded, already beginning to stand. Spending more time with Towhee didn't seem like a bad idea, anyways. Will you lead the way?

This seemed like a good start to his time in the caldera. He would have to hope he could keep this going with the others.

RE: Got that Bourbon Street steak with the Oreo shake. - Towhee - May 22, 2025

That was a rhetorical question, she joshed as she began moving. If you couldn’t patrol, I’d lead the way to the borders and promptly yeet you across them.

She quickly broke into a trot, which was hopefully answer enough for Cinar. She didn’t even bother glancing backward as she hit the incline, climbing up the ridge to the caldera’s rim before descending the outer flank to patrol the foot of the extinct volcano. A total perimeter check felt unnecessary, though she—they—would perform a quick sweep before retiring.

I figured we could wrap here and have another soon? :)
